I love these panels so much because it really puts Mikasa and Armin’s relationship into perspective, as to why they share the purest and most beautiful friendship in the series. First, we see Armin vomiting over the fact that he just killed someone. Mikasa doesn’t even say anything, she just places her hand on his back and sits beside him, making sure he’s okay.
Then he asks her if she’s gone through this and she’s rendered surprised and speechless. Armin’s face in the next panel is instant regret and now he feels guilty, even though he is the one who is internally and externally filled with anguish, shock, guilt and despair over just killing a person but he apologises to her to make her feel better because how dare he make her feel sad by inadvertently reminding her of what happened on the night her parents were murdered. How dare he remind her of a traumatic experience in her life. Mikasa is one of his best friends, he doesn’t want her to feel sad or be reminded of traumatic experiences in her life.
And in the last panel, even after she tells him that she doesn’t mind, he’s still apologising and Mikasa is sitting there just rubbing his back ( I think that’s what she’s doing? It’s hard to tell, but it definitely looks like that ) and still making sure he’s okay because this boy is one of her best friends and she wants him to feel the polar opposite of what he’s feeling right now.
If anybody dare tells you that Mikasa doesn’t care about Armin or only likes Armin because he and Eren are friends, direct them to these panels or this post because this just amplifies that Mikasa and Armin share the most beautiful and developed friendship in the entire series.
