For those who watched The Untamed on Youtube and Netflix, here is the true ending we deserved. The same footage shown in a different order tells a completely new story.

This is from the finale last night – what the show’s cast and crew would’ve wanted you to see.

Well, I’m not a professional and my kanji skills are literally worse than when I was an actual child, but here’s my translation of the Japanese subtitles. As always, direct translations don’t always make the most sense, so I went with what I thought flowed best while getting the correct concept/tone across. (A translation of a translation! I’m sure it’s 50% disaster).

Scene 1 (separation)

WWX: Lan Zhan. Aren’t you going? (1)

Scene 2 (mountain)

WWX: I’m that way.

LWJ: I’m this way. Pause. Have you decided where you will go?

WWX: This world is wide. I’ll wander towards the horizon with my wine and donkey. The whole of this world is my house. Long and meaningful pause. Lan Zhan. I’m going now.

LWJ: Nods

WWX: Little Apple, It’s time to go (2). Starts walking. Calls back. Grass and trees never cease to grow, unstoppable water continues to flow. We will see each other again. (3)

Scene 2.5 (LWJ is alone and thinking about what WWX said)

WWX: Lan Zhan. Until the next time we meet, I’ll be thinking of the name for that song. I might have some thoughts already.

MUSICAL INTERLUDE (sorry, I’m not translating all these lyrics).

LWJ: Wei Ying.

Scene 3 (confrontation with NHS)

Translation Notes:

1) WWX uses ‘omae’ which is a fairly informal word for ‘you’ and I think shows just how comfortable/informal they are with each other.

2) The Japanese translates it as ‘Apple-chan’ which is adorable.

3) Is this some kind of proverb maybe? I tried to make it make sense in English.

4) Literally ‘house regulations’

5) Same sentiment as ‘bro’ but more polite. Not really any English equivalent.

6) Fucking proverb again?

3) The original sentence was 青山不改、綠水長流、後會有期。Literally: the mountains will forever be blue, and the green rivers will flow endlessly; we shall inevitably meet again. He was telling LWJ that their bond isn’t ephemeral, so they’ll both be around to see each other again, and the parting now is only temporary.

6) The original sentence was 魏兄啊，我記得有人說過，這山川風物四時美景，真是無論看多久，都不會覺得厭。NHS is allegedly quoting something WWX told him in the past, and he said “These mountains, rivers, landscapes, and the beautiful scenery of the four seasons – one never tires of looking at them.” What he means is that he’s not in any hurry to take on the burdens of being the Chief Cultivator.
