clip studio paint is switching to a subscription model in 2023, so here’s your reminder that pirating is moral

Avatar

i really encourage people to read the actual article, but to be completely clear;

if you have a csp license now, you won’t have to pay for a subscription unless you want to upgrade to csp 2 in 2023. csp will no longer receive major updates after the release of csp 2. however, you cannot purchase csp once csp 2 comes out, so after 2023 all new csp licenses will be subscription-model only.

if you have csp now, you won’t need to stop using it !!!

this summary is amazingly incorrect

  • if you own csp 1, yes, you will still own csp 1. nothing about that will change. you will not have to pay a subscription fee.
  • you will be able to buy csp 2 for a one-time fee and receive fixes and stability updates
  • when csp 3 comes out you will also be able to buy that for a one-time fee and receive fixes and stability updates
  • they are not planning to move to 'subscription-model only' at any point, ever (according to this announcement I mean, I don't work for them, I don't read minds)

here is the part people are freaking out and getting confused about:

  • if you want early access to the new features that continue to be developed after the release of csp 2, you can opt-in to a subscription model - basically as if you were subbed to a patreon, you get the new shit ahead of the big version releases
  • all of those new features will be released as 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 etc. updates that will only be available via subscription
  • all of the 2.x updates will be included in csp 3.0, which you will be able to purchase forever for a one-time fee. you will just have to wait for the big release.

celsys have super fucked up how they communicated all of this, confused everyone, scared people, and pissed off their userbase. the bottom line is that you will be able to purchase every full release of CSP for a one-time fee and own it in perpetuity. the subscription models are an optional structure for people with money to burn who want new features as soon as they're ready.

the fact that the subscription models are insanely confusing and include a weird rip-off tier that's being presented as an option for people who want to 'upgrade' is so stupid. genuinely it's so fucking stupid they shot themselves in the dick here for literally no reason at all. they are so bad at comms it defies belief.

e: do not @ me about the stupid details of the stupid subscription models, I hate subscription models, I think this is badly executed, the point is you will not be forced to pay monthly or whatever. you can still just buy and own and use the art program.

clip studio paint just announced that it is releasing a "2.0" version in 2023 which will require a new one time purchase or active subscription. users who do not purchase the new 2023 version will no longer receive feature updates, but will still have access to the "1.x" version forever. users who do not purchase subscriptions will not receive updates to the 2.0 version until 3.0, which will also require a separate "one time" purchase. they are basically phasing out functional one time purchase plans by forcing you to subscribe to continue getting updates, or to continue buying each new major version at whatever interval they are released.

tell them how you feel about this update, and consider sending some feedback emails as well. also post screenshots of the tweet ratios because WOW those quote tweets are going up FAST

Writing fight scenes
@bluebxlle_writer on Instagram

1. Pacing

A fight scene should be fast-paced and intense. Unless it's a final battle with numerous parties, a fight scene that's too long tends to take away suspense. To speed up your pacing, use active voice to describe movement and don't overdescribe your characters' thoughts. Excessive inner monologue will be unrealistic, as people usually have no room to think during intense combats.

2. Character mannerisms

Here's a point that people often overlook, but is actually super important. Through fight scenes, you should be able to reveal your characters' contrasting mannerisms and personality. A cunning character would play dirty - fighting less and making use of their opponent's weakness more. A violent character would aim to kill. A softer one would only target to disarm their enemies, using weakened attacks. A short-minded character would only rely on force and attack without thinking. This will help readers understand your characters more and decide who to root for.

3. Making use of surroundings

Not only the characters, you also need to consider the setting of your fight scene and use it to your advantage. Is it suitable for fighting, or are there dangerous slopes that make it risky? Are there scattered items that can help your characters fight (e.g. nails, shards of glass, ropes, wooden boards, or cutlery)? Is it a public place where people can easily spot the fight and call the authorities, or is it a private spot where they can fight to the death?

4. Description

The main things that you need to describe in a fight scene are :

• Characters involved in the fight
• How they initiate and dodge attacks
• Fighting styles and any weapons used
• The injuries caused

Be careful to not drag out the description for too long, because it slows down the pace.

5. Raise the stakes

By raising the stakes of the fight, your readers will be more invested in it. Just when they think it's over, introduce another worse conflict that will keep the scene going. Think of your characters' goals and motivations as well. Maybe if the MC didn't win, the world would end! Or maybe, one person in the fight is going all-out, while the other is going easy because they used to be close :"D

6. Injuries

Fights are bound to be dirty and resulting in injuries, so don't let your character walk away unscathed - show the effect of their injuries. For example, someone who had been punched in the jaw has a good chance of passing out, and someone who had been stabbed won't just remove the knife and walk away without any problem. To portray realistic injuries, research well.

7. Drive the plot forward

You don't write fight scenes only to make your characters look cool - every fight needs to have a purpose and drive the plot forward. Maybe they have to fight to improve their fighting skills or escape from somewhere alive. Maybe they need to defeat the enemy in order to obtain an object or retrieve someone who had been kidnapped. The point is, every single fight scene should bring the characters one step closer (or further :D) to the climax.

8. Words to use

• Hand to hand combat :

Crush, smash, lunge, beat, punch, leap, slap, scratch, batter, pummel, whack, slam, dodge, clobber, box, shove, bruise, knock, flick, push, choke, charge, impact

• With weapon :

Swing, slice, brandish, stab, shoot, whip, parry, cut, bump, poke, drive, shock, strap, pelt, plunge, impale, lash, bleed, sting, penetrate

As someone who struggles to write fight scenes, this is absolutely amazing!!

Writer Block First Aid Kit

We’ve all been there. Some people have it all the time. Some say it doesn’t exist. I class writer’s block as anything from lack of motivation to not being able to solve a plot problem. Whatever it is, here’s a list of activities to try and get those creative rivers running.

  1. Move. Pick up your laptop and go to a different room. They say a change is as good as a rest and this can be true with writing. Move to the kitchen. Write outside. Go to a coffee shop. Sit in the cupboard under the stairs and block out the world. Just change up the scenery.
  2. Swap Medium. If words just aren’t doing it for you make aesthetics, mood boards, draw maps or characters. Victoria Aveyard once said she designed book covers and let the plot stew in the back of her mind.
  3. Write Something Else. Working on other projects can give you inspiration for what you’re working on now. Find some prompts. Write irrelevant short stories or character studies. Write about your characters as kids or at defining points in their lives.
  4. Plot. Hands off the keyboard, open up one of those many unused notebooks I know you have and start scribbling vague, half formed ideas. Allow yourself to write things you might discard later. Allow yourself to try and work through an idea you like but don’t understand yet. Try and work out the next 10 steps. 10 things you want to cover. 10 scenes. 10 days. Whatever it is, just write it down.
  5. 20 Minutes Rule. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. Sit your butt down in that chair and write for 20 minutes. I don’t care if it’s trash. I don’t care if you’re going to delete it all later. I don’t care if it’s nonsense. Do it. 20 minutes of writing nonsense is still more productive than 20 minutes staring at that wall. After 20 minutes if you still don’t want to write, leave it, but you just might find yourself inspired.
  6. Finally, Take Time Off. If none of this is working, it’s likely a sign of burn out. Take some time for yourself and just do nothing. “Write every single day,” yeah sure if you wont to be a machine who pumps out words instead of art. Sometimes you need to recharge before you move forward and that doesn’t just mean getting a good nights sleep. Look after yourself and be kind. This isn’t a race against the clock, you have your whole life to publish a book.

A quick process post for my Wright & Edgeworth piece since a couple folks were asking about it over on twitter! I think it’s actually deceptively simple, I just work like this when I really want to focus on bold silhouettes and color blocking:

  1. rough sketch
  2. group sketch with a flat grey color, add a mask to the group and mask out the silhouettes (you’ll see the silhouette cut in and out of the sketch as I’m making decisions at this point, like fixing Phoenix’s tiny feet)
  3. block in flat colors under the sketch to get graphic shapes, good color blocking
  4. ink over the flats (sketch is still slightly visible at a low opacity, but erased where it gets too busy), add skin variation and details like teeth/eyes/buttons, tweak both as needed
  5. Shading is just a single color set to multiply, I’ll turns the flats on and off to keep track of the overall shading as I’m doing it
  6. Final overlay color and a couple spec highlights, and YER DONE

my favorite clip studio assets!

since i’ve been using csp a lot more now i thought i’d make a post of the assets i use the most for ppl looking for good stuff!

OMG THE ERASE ALONG EDGE WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE! OP THANK YOU! THANK YOU! WITH LITERAL TEARS IN MY EYES

THANK YOU!!!!!!

yesterday i reblogged a drawing resource that included how to draw hijabs - and it honestly wasn’t the best advice i’ve seen out there

now, i’m not an artist. but what i saw was a video that included hijab styles most of us don’t really wear and incorrect terminology surrounding niqabs and burqas (yes, there is a difference between the two)

so, i went searching and found a tutorial that i felt was better! these drawing guides and examples come from @/winchestermeg on twitter, and i think they’re really great 💕

this has more relevant examples and correct terminologies, and is drawn by a muslim woman

enjoy, artists of tumblr!

Just in case you forget this exists.

With those “when you want to design a character but you don’t know color theory” posts flying around I thought this would be relevant again.

SLAMs THE REBLOG BUTTON

there’s also Coolors website that gives you randomized palettes!

Avatar

Don’t forget ColourLovers, either! It’s a social media-esque site where you can browse tons of palettes and share your own.

You can browse the most popular ones or search for certain colors, themes, and even specific hex codes!

When you find one you like, you can download a wallpaper swatch of it and also select the specific colors it uses to look at more palettes that use those same ones.

ColourLovers is my go-to for when I’m having trouble coming up with a color scheme! It’s also been around for over a decade, so there’s plenty to browse through.

I do love me a good color palet.

Aaa yes these websites are gr8 💛💛💛

Hey btw if you don’t know how to program, you should check out [novelty], which is a free Visual Novel creation software. Absolutely no programming required, and it’s super easy to use, I played with it some when I was a teen but the only reason I didn’t do much with it is cuz I made my story complicated and had like 5000 different branching routes that kept spawning new routes and made myself confused LMAO

But yeah, it’s a WYSIWYG with a really straight-forward GUI, if I remember correctly.

It even comes with some free backgrounds and characters and stuff, and this is what it looks like:

Did I mention it’s super duper free? It hasn’t been updated since 2010, but it has basically all you’d need to make a simple visual novel.

Just make sure your DirectX runtime is updated, cuz it can act buggy if it’s outdated, but this program is so old that I doubt it’d even be an issue lol

holy shit

This is so cool? Can you imagine fanfic in this format?

@becausedragonage @ashidoodle can I recommend Choice Script? It’s like a choose your own adventure coding program. The finished product looks like this, where every option sends you down a different path:

They are literally books you can play. You can even insert your own character’s name and pronouns and that would make writing reader inserts so much easier And as a writer who can not art, writing and making dating sims and games is more convenient.

The coding is also super simple and easy to learn and all it requires other than the program files is a text editor. And just like that you can start typing up like you would your own fanfics or stories. Plus it’s very versatile so you can make your game/book as simple or as complicated as you want, and even implement stats and inventory systems.

AND CHOICE SCRIPT IS ALSO SUPER DUPER FREE. THE COMPANY EVEN PUBLISHES YOUR FINISHED GAME FOR YOU AND GIVES YOU ROYALTIES IF YOU CHOOSE TO SELL IT. THE PROGRAM STILL GETS UPDATED AND  THE COMPANY PUBLISHES BOOKS EVERY MONTH INCLUDING THE FANMADE ONES. THERE’S ALSO A FORUM FOR PEOPLE TO POST WIPS AND TALK ABOUT CHOICE SCRIPT AND GET HELP.

For any burgeoning digital storytellers/narrative game devs out there! :)

How to put “wrote fan-fiction” on your résumé:

Leveraged an inventory of established fictional character and setting elements to generate a disruptive custom-curated narrative entertainment asset.

I worked in HR, handling applications and interviews, and if someone turned in that string of techno babble nonsense, I would have rejected them out of hand.

A resume doesn’t need to sound fancy or overly technical, it needs to tell us why we should hire you.

“Independent novelist/writer” is more than sufficient here. If you want to express the skills that fan fiction taught you, something like, “creative writing, editing, and publication,” will get you a lot further than… Whatever that just was.

A resume should be tailored to the position, if you can afford the time and energy for that. But if not, then just think about what writing got fandom taught you. How to respond to criticism, how to present a professional pubic face, how to correct punished mistakes, creative thinking, project planning, persuasion via emotional leverage, html formatting, office suite fluency.
