being critical of academia because it’s heavily hierarchical and systemically racist, and saying that individuals within academia are in no way more qualified to discuss academic subjects than non-academics are two completely different things. sjcjdjahe i swear some people think that to get a history degree you just read like. commercial biographies and watch hamilton. idk how to tell you all this but tiktok doesn’t have a peer review process

that stomach dropping moment after a kpop chorus when it suddenly gets really quiet and you know you’re about to hear the worst rap of all time

the cultural move to calling everything "content" and positing people as "content creators" or "content consumers" is a deliberate shift to obscure both the person who makes something and the process of looking at the thing that has been made.

an audience is called upon to respond, to contemplate, to argue, to extrapolate, to riot, to adore. what duty does a content consumer have? to consume.

and another thing!!! i'm not just talking about artists when i talk about the depersonalization of "content creator" i am also talking about the intern making graphics on canva to post on social media about the upcoming summer sale or whatever. that person also makes things! and that person and the things they make are mashed up into the endless grist mill of "content" and "content creator" along with artisinal youtube video essayists and master sculptors trying to figure out tiktok. so many people and their work is amalgamated into the slurry of "content," inviting you to ignore them and their work and devaluing their labor, telling you simply to lay back and consume

i have more thoughts on this. the artificial inflation of video is a well-known issue in social media, but i think it plays into the flattening of all art into "content" as well. like... a behind-the-scenes process video is algorithmically more valuable on most platforms than a static image of the end result. meaning that the actual art created by graphic artists, just to name one example, is artificially depressed to be of the same or (more likely!) less importance than a time-lapse video of them making it

stepped on a plum (overripe plum) (barefoot) it was on the driveway got out of the car and accidentally (didn't know it was there) stepped on the plum (warm) (on the ground) (it had fallen from the tree) barefoot (no shoes) wearing long pants (too long) (need to hem them) plum viscera got on them (the pants) unexpected plum on the driveway (hot plum) (97 degrees out) already super hungover (throwing up all morning) (should not have been driving at all) and I stepped out of the car (black car) (97 degrees out) and onto the plum (unexpected) (didn't know the plum was there) and it burst (plum nightmare on my only good pair of sweatpants) still we find ways to keep ourselves going from day to day

happy one year anniversary to possibly the best plum poem since william carlos williams' "this is just to say"

you guys. if you haven't been following the mar a lago fbi raid saga this week you have really been missing out. it came out monday night that the fbi had spent the day collecting boxes of documents from mar a lago and maga world lost it. "this is war", hard right demands to abolish the fbi, insane posturing, every single pundit on the record saying "if this search was for anything short of the nuclear codes, this is going to massively backfire on the biden administration" (foreshadowing!). eventually report comes out that people close to trump are quietly telling the rest of the gop to dial it back just a hair, because things might get worse before they get better. most crucially is that the susan collinses of the world are demanding accountability from the justice department, demanding that they explain why this raid was warranted. (notably, trump himself has the warrant describing exactly what the fbi was there to collect, and is free to share that with the world at any point - the judge/doj is typically barred from making that public at any point, so by hounding the wrong figures for the warrant they're thinking they can control the narrative.)

not so. today, attorney general merrick garland makes a statement saying you know what? you guys are so right. there's actually significant public interest in making the details of this warrant - why a former president was raided by the fbi - public knowledge. so with your blessing, mr trump, i am asking the judge who signed the warrant (he and his synagogue have been getting death threats already btw, rot in hell forever you maga fuckwits) to unseal the warrant. trump, you have until 3pm friday to publicly object to this action. love and light, merrick

and then wapo reported tonight that the warrant was for, among other things, nuclear documents. yeehaw

this should be a tweet but I don’t want to deal with people on Twitter. everyone stop having every character in your fiction talk like their goal is to get an A in therapy.

I love cathartic conversations too and that is why I am begging you: stop hunting them to extinction by making them constant, characterless, and corny as hell
