Incredible contemporary works by Japanese artist Maya Fuji, who lives and works in San Francisco, California.
Fuji is inspired by her cultural heritage and the exploration of how one carries on tradition through generations of living abroad. She is fascinated by traditional Japanese mythology and folklore, and expands on these themes within the context of her own experiences of being an issei (first generation) woman in the United States. A recurring theme in her work is the exploration of what creates our sense of identity, and how that can shift over ones life. Being multinational, multicultural, and multiracial is central to her work, and her paintings illuminate self discovery through her narration and exploration of these experiences.
