the most sordid aspect of FIDE banning trans women from chess competitions is that in the previous weeks there seems to have been a reckoning in terms of sexual abusers still being allowed in chess competitions and many women (including multiple trans women) spoke up and were fighting about it. and FIDE's response was to call trans women the greatest threat to women's chess which is so telling lmaoooooo
it was literally initiated two weeks before by an open letter first signed by 14 female chess players in france (including yosha iglesias, a trans woman) and that has now been signed by more than a hundred of them. a shitton of people responded by claiming they were infected by "wokism" and "gender ideology" for pointing out sexual violence and misogyny in the chess world. FIDE responded on august 11 claiming to be against sexual violence and misogyny..... and then banned trans women four days later, to the acclaim of transmisogynists who didn't actually give a shit about sexual violence or misogyny in chess lmao. this edict has also absolutely fucked over yosha iglesias, already the victim of horrifying harassment over speaking out about sexual violence at all, and now doubly so over the fact that she is unsure she can even participate in the french women's tournament which is days away. it's calculated and cruel in ways i can barely stand.

Apparently the first hurricane since 1939 is expected to make landfall in California this weekend. It’s expected that an entire year’s worth of rain will fall in 24-48hrs. Don’t you love climate change?
It’s expected that the hurricane will weaken to a tropical storm before making landfall in Southern California.
Still, as someone who lives in LA, this is deeply concerning. Anyone who lives in Los Angeles knows that the city is DEEPLY unprepared to handle any amount of rain, let alone a TROPICAL STORM. The tiniest amounts of rainfall cause floods in LA, because the city has no drainage systems in place. I’ve seen DRIZZLES cause floods. It takes so little rain to flood LA.
If a tropical storm truly does make landfall in LA, it will have a devastating effect on the city’s very large unhoused population. LA (along with NYC) has the biggest unhoused population in the United States, and these people will be stuck on the flooded streets.

people are good at hiding it sometimes. sometimes the religion teaches them to hide it. sometimes the kind of trauma they received isn't cool or flashy. sometimes it's just intense anxiety and paranoia. sometimes it's complicated trauma or sexual trauma that they don't want to show you.
and you know what? just because you don't understand it doesn't mean that it's not real to the person experiencing it.
The older you get the more you will realize that your friends are people who have made mistakes and bad decisions and even just fucked up and hurt people.
And obviously your boundaries with your friends are completely up to you but you do need to recognize that if you cut off everyone who has done something wrong, you’re going to end up with no friends (and you yourself will have also fucked up in your life, and not lived up to those impossible standards either).
I’ve found it’s much more constructive to learn how to say “hey dude, that was massively fucked up of you,” because most people are really willing to say “yeah, it was, I need to work on it/not do it again/apologize and make things right” ESPECIALLY if they are hearing it from you as their friend.
Sometimes the kindest thing you can do for another person is to tell them that they’ve done something wrong, help them fix it, and stay their friend because it’s what we would want from them if we did something wrong.
see i think what people get caught up in is going "oh this and that are fetish art......hey did you know x thing is a fetish...pretty crazy right.....this piece of art is actually a fetish for the artist........" and like. see the problem is thinking that devalues the art. i don't think something being a fetish or sexual in nature or whatever actually detracts from any meaning or emotional weight something could have. i don't think "horny" is a worthless or meaningless emotion and i don't see why exploring it in art is any different from "sadness" or "happiness" or "anger". does that make sense? im just sayin we should examine why we view sexuality as inherently detracting/meaning less in art than other things
