Selena Vanilla Morningstar, the one and only! (I am over 18, you don't need to know more than that)

honestly the human brain is so small that you *will* forget how much beauty there is out there to experience unless you leave your house every three days. ik its fucked up but i promise its true

my brain, trying to deceive me: there's literally nothing outside!!!!! it's the same neighborhood it's always been !!!!!

me, tying my shoes: shut up shut up!!!! by god we're gonna try to find magic in mundane today !!!!

one of these days i'll hate myself enough to post an in-depth hot take of an essay about the appropriation and orientalism baked into the Gerudo and how blatant and awful TOTK is about it but that probably isn't today if i'm not paid money to do it

Okay maybe I’m just dumb, but how can a game made in Japan, by Japanese people, with a worldwide audience but a mythos that began as “a thing for Japanese people” and continued that way for the first ten years or so, be orientalist? That seems…not really possible? Unless it’s like subtle anti-Chinese/anti-Korean tropes like you see sometimes in anime, but. I feel like that’s kind of its own problem with a different name.

What we have here is a specialized term that has a slightly different meaning than you'd think from how the term was built -- you'd think Orientalism would refer to the exoticization and othering of Asian cultures (South, East, Southeast, Central), and it has been broadened to include those, but it was coined to refer to the literary and cultural treatment of the "Near East" -- the "Oriental" is the "Oriental" of "Oriental Rug." Basically, being weird and creepy about North African, Levantine, and Middle-Eastern people. Foundational book is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orientalism_(book) Said, of course, would insist that this doesn't include European depictions of Jews, but given 17-early-20C "modern" antisemitism heavily leans on how Jews are an "Oriental race," he's wrong.

All that said, I've only seen one 'Dorf-including memory and BOY HOWDY is it hammering on being weird and creepy about North African, Levantine, and Arab stereotypes and tropes. That's been present in LoZ since Ocarina, of course, but it kind of gets cranked to 11 in Tears.

I've been running around collecting memories for the past couple hours and YEAHHHH. Gerudo have always been extremely iffy in nature, and TOTK feels like it's sort of trying to go hard in on it.

That said I can't believe I never made the Levantine connection. How did I not make that connection I'm a theologian oml. Got too blinded by evil titties.

Wait I’m sorry I’ve never played a Zelda game what’s this about orientalism

The Gerudo are racist in very specific ways is the tldr

Wanna be radicalized?

We sent our kid off to Germany for a year as an exchange student.

As a foreign national, you have to buy into their national health care plan, because you don’t pay taxes there to support it.

Wanna know what it costs to buy into Germany’s health care for a year for a healthy 18yr old?

a solid YEAR of “everything is covered, no deductible, no copay, we don’t send bills?”

$500.

for. a. whole. year.

It seems like there's more positivity on Tumblr than other platforms (*cough*Twitter*cough*). Like, you can say "I love you, bestie." without anyone calling you corny or childish.

Y'know what? Reblog this to let your besties know you love them.

In case you’ve never seen Once Upon A Time, these are all things that actually happened on the show:

  • Snow White and Dr. Frankenstein had a one night stand.
  • Grumpy the dwarf used to be named Dreamy, but changed his name after he had to break up with his nice fairy girlfriend.
  • There was an eighth dwarf named Stealthy. He’s dead.
  • Red Riding Hood is a werewolf. She ate her boyfriend.
  • Mulan is in love with Aurora.
  • Mulan is also one of Robin Hood’s merry men.
  • Elsa and Anna have an evil aunt named Ingrid, who also has ice powers, that the rock trolls cursed the kingdom into forgetting all about. (She runs an ice cream shop.)
  • Peter Pan is Rumplestiltskin’s father.
  • Rumplestiltskin’s wife left him to be with Captain Hook.
  • Captain Hook later falls in love with Rumplestiltskin’s grandson’s mother.
  • But it’s okay, Rumplestiltskin later fell in love with Belle. And they had a kid. Then she died at the end of a really weird Up-style montage.
  • The Evil Queen and the Wicked Witch of the West are half-sisters.
  • Robin Hood and the Evil Queen are in love.
  • The Wicked Witch pretended to be Maid Marian after a time travel adventure and got pregnant with Robin Hood’s kid.
  • The Wicked Witch and Hades are in love.
  • The Evil Queen split herself in two using Dr. Jekyll’s serum. (Yes, as in Jekyll and Hyde.)

Feel free to add more! This show is bonkers lmao

Facts about this show that live in my head, rent free

  • Little Bo Peep is a goddamn crime boss
  • Cruella deVil was able to telepathically control animals
  • She also had her ability to kill anyone (human or animal) taken away and her entire goal was to just be able to kill people and/or animals again
  • Maleficent, as a dragon, had sex with Zorro, who is also able to turn into a dragon, and they had a baby
  • Maleficent literally did not know who the other dragon was, and Zorro himself never actually appears in the show. His identity was revealed in a throwaway line in the series finale
  • There is a massage parlor in Storybrooke called the Three Bears Day Spa, and a restaurant called Aesop’s Table

One of the weirdest things about getting older had been watching the definition of "a hundred years ago" change. When I was a kid, that meant "The long ago 1800s, before modern technology or pop culture!" Now it's "Oh, the Roaring Twenties. They had cars and Mickey Mouse"
