another Mari Appreciation Moment: she kept berries in jars bc she wanted to save them. She left them in the jars so long that they fermented into alcohol. i can't talk about akilah because I'm going to get too emotional. this is a girl who still studies for the SATs because When (not if, When) they get back she'll still be a junior. a girl who is right there with tai when she says she's finding them a way out. akilah! grieving her best friend who used to do pre-game rituals with her just for the fun of it. akilah! making faces at the prayer circle because she doesn't know what the fuck it's all about but it's Something and there's some hope in that, right? a girl who is starving to death but still finds an extra crumb to keep a mouse alive that almost certainly and understandably any other person there would have killed to eat on the spot. AND SHE IS SHARING HER FOOD WITH IT! a girl scout who knows someone who gave birth One Time and is now stepping up to the plate, hands covered in blood to deliver a wilderness baby because if she doesnt, who will? akilah who knows which plants will kill them, who can always read the room, who is just Fucking Kind. akilah with the only family back home that seems worth going back home to. akilah, who will probably never see home again.
