Autistic People & Makeup
In this post, Iâve collected some of the many comments and tips I have received since this anon asked about tips for using makeup as an autistic person with sensory processing issues:
- âI had an easier time with mineral powders than any other kind, though some are itchy and it takes some trial and error to determine which ones those are.â - snailchimera
- âMineral makeup is good, lighter and less irritating, but the minerals can cause reaction in some people. Etsy sellers often list all ingredients and can help determine if their product is for youâ - @thornyoak
- âWhat do you want out of makeup? Do you want a high fashion, full face with contour look? Do you want a dab of color on your eyes, lips, or cheeks? Do you want something in the middle? Do you have uneven skin or acne you want to cover? There is no right answer here, itâs 100% what YOU want. Donât feel the need to do more than is comfortable.
- It also depends on what textures, scents, etc. bother you. I hate hate hate âgreasyâ textures, so a lot of moisturizing foundations and BB/CC creams are out. If you have issues with gritty or powdery textures, the opposite holds; go for cream or liquid based products. If you need to use a product that is counter to this, see the next pointâŚ.
- Go with products that are the highest quality you can afford. It is often products that are less finely milled or have a lot of âfillersâ that with cause sensory issues and skin troubles. This doesnât necessarily mean that you have to go drop a bajillion dollars at the MAC counter; there are a lot of drugstore products that are actually quite nice.
- Last but not least; have fun! Experiment! That is what makeup is about! And good luck :) - wolfrowan
- âHi I donât know exactly what sensory issues are but it seems like youâre just talking about makeup that doesnât feel like youâre wearing makeup? I might be wrong but I have some tips for that too!
- Powder foundations are great, I like NYX HD Studio Photogenic powder cause it feels like nothing. It comes in translucent and I think a few tinted shades. But, if you want more coverage or if you just like liquids better, you can mix something like Argan oil (super lightweight and v cheap at beauty supply stores) in with your liquid foundation and it feels like nothing.
- Mascara does tend to feel like something on your face but my tip for that would be to spend a few extra dollars if you can on something with more natural ingredients. My two favorite mascaras that donât feel horrible to me are the Physicians Formula natural ones and the Shea Moisture mascaras. I can wear multiple coats of those comfortably. They donât feel hard or heavy on your lashes. Also if you curl your lashes first, you can get away with only applying a little. Granted I donât have this issue so others may be (and probably are) a lot more sensitive. But yeah. I hope I could help anyway :)â - twerkcircus
- âIâm on mobile so I cant go all out on this, but some tips I have include:
- Finding makeup thats very lightweight and thin like lose powder foundation as opposed to liquid bc it feels like theres nothing on your skin. (I recommend bare minerals powder foundation and l'oreal loose mineral makeup)
- Also something I did was work my way up to wearing more makeup. I started with just eyeliner and then moved to mascara and eyeshadow and lipstick and so on. (I found mascara to be the hardest.) Take your time with it.
- The most helpful for me was that I turned my makeup into a little ritual every morning and the more I took it slow and enjoyed the application, the more I was okay with having it on my face, so now Iâve gotten to the point where most of the time Iâm 100% cool with wearing a full face of makeup, but there are still days when my sensory issues act up and I choose to leave my face blank for the sake of my anxiety and thats totally chill tooâ - @narwhal-noir
- âIf weâre talking application, eyeliner that is the soft crayon-style is best. There isnât the discomfort from a pencil kind or the wetness of the liquid kind. Also for lipstick, I use a lipstick crayon as well, because it gives better control and uses less product, so it feels lighter and less sticky. I usually skip mascara if Iâm having a bad sensory day, thereâs not much to be done about that. Just go for super light products where your can control the application the most.â - donderdag-middag
- âAlways smell your makeup before you buy it. Go to someplace you can sample it and put it on your face or hand, and see if the smell bothers you throughout the day. It sucks to spend money on something you canât use because the smell is too strong.â - @labrownrecluseÂ
- âHi! Major makeup geek here and fellow aspie! Anon, what exactly are asking for when you ask for tips? Like which brands to avoid if youâve got sensory issues? Or stuff like how to blend and do a smoky eye?â - @matt-the-blind-cinnamon-roll
- I could never live without makeup honestly!! I donât use eyeliner, and I canât help with mascara because I use the brush thing that comes in the tubes, but I do need to use alternatives to the brushes that come with blush and eye shadow. Thereâs a few different alternatives, you can use napkins/paper towels, which come in all kinds of different textures!
- It took me a lot of practice applying blush with paper towels because you have to first figure out what texture suits you best, and then figure out how to do it properly because itâs meant to be applied with the brush that comes with the makeup. For eye shadow, you can use paper towels/napkins, but I find it easier to use Q-tips. But if thatâs not something you can handle, then go ahead and try the paper towels or napkins!
- Something that I found that really helps with the sensory weirdness of having things touching my face (especially around the eyes) is texture stimming. I generally stand on a blanket or a piece of fabric with one of my favorite textures and curl my toes against it or twist one of my heels into it. Itâs different for everyone, but this is just what I do, so itâs worth a shot! Youâre welcome to come talk to me about specifics, too, since thereâs probably more I failed to mention! - @blueflavoredcandy
- My number one sensory defensive makeup tip is to wash everything off as soon as youâre done, especially mascara because for me it gets pokey. Also: Donât use fiber mascara if you have sensitive eyes. Warm things up in your hands before applying so it doesnât feel as weird. Try to get super soft makeup brushes; I prefer synthetic. And at the end of the day, if youâre having a bad day on Tuesday and donât wanna wear makeup, donât wear makeup on Tuesday. Hope I helped! hematophage
Good luck to all the autistic people who want to use makeup, I hope you found some of these tips useful!
Makeup Tips for Folks With Sensory Issues
If youâre bothered by foundation, look into powder foundations, if the âcreamy/stickyâ texture is the problem (Au Naturale Powder Foundation, $32). If the weight on your face is the problem, use a super lightweight foundation, one of those that are advertised as âbarely thereâ (Pacifica Dreamy Cover, $17). You could also look into tinted moisturizer (e.l.f Studio Tinted Moisturizer, $3) or BB cream (e.l.f BB Cream SPF 20, $6). If none of these work for you, keep your skin as clean & clear as possible with as much of a daily & weekly regimen as you can do, and consider using a lightweight concealer to cover anything that you think needs covering (e.l.f Beautifully Bare Lightweight Concealer Stick, $4).
If youâre bothered by eyeshadows, consider using a cream shadow rather than a powder shadow (e.l.f Smudge Pot Cream Eyeshadow, $3, or Au Naturale Creme Eye Shadows, $20). Thereâs also the e.l.f Prism Eyeshadows, $10, which âlook like a powder but feel like a creamâ. Another option is liquid eyeshadow, if cream doesnât work for you either (e.l.f Beautifully Bare Smooth Matte Eyeshadow, $4)
If youâre bothered by lipstick, consider using a light gloss (Pacifica Enlightened Gloss, $10) or lip butter (Pacifica Lip Butter, $10). Another option is to just fill everything in with a nice lip liner (Au Naturale Lip Liners, $18). If you need more pigment, go for matte colors, (e.l.f Matte Lip Color, $3), though preferably not in the âliquid-to-matteâ format, since those tend to be a bit sticky. If all else fails, a tinted balm (Pacifica Lip Tint, $5) will do the trick enough.

like for real though nancy spent all of season 3 working with sexist assholes & having her experience minimized by jonathan only for robin to stand up and give that speech at pennhurst, unintentionally proving to understand nancy more deeply than her boyfriend ever did in less than two minutes

Chapter 4 - The Club:
Natalie turns her head a little so that her lips can whisper directly into Maria's ear. In a low husky voice and a sly smile, she says, "I really like how your body feels against mine."
Maria's breath hitches and she can feel heat rushing up her brain, too much, too quickly.

(long post alert)
Since I've spent an unhealthy amount of time staring at photos of Maria Hill in uniforms, I figured I might as well make a post about it. Might even be a helpful reference for some of you writers..
So I counted 4 uniform styles:
This one everyone knows. It's the classic Maria Hill look. She wore it in the Avengers (2012) and also in the Agents of Shield.
So it's a one piece suit, dark navy blue. Very practical, with inbuilt loops for her gun belt. There's a plastic-y looking SHIELD logo on each side of the arms, with a three stripes thing also on the left arm (I'm guessing three stripes means commander).
Based on that last photo, I'd say it's made of some kind of thin polyester material, you know, the kind that's light and flexible and keeps you cool when you work out in the summer.
I really love the zipper and standing collar here (I love it when Natasha grabs her collar and pulls her in for a kiss. And there's lots of things Natasha can do with the zipper. But I'll leave that to your imagination đ). And I think Maria always wears a black tank top or maybe t-shirt underneath.
It seems she always wears this with knee high boots.
This is the one she wore in Winter Soldier (hence the name) and also in that vanity fair photoshoot (that very rare occasion where Maria and Natasha were seen together in a single camera shot, or at least the same photo)
I think this is a two piece suit. Also in dark navy blue. But it also looks a little greyish under certain light. My favourite thing about this is it has an embroidered name tag at the front with her name "HILL". It also has an embroidered SHIELD logo at each side of the arms. Let's take a closer look at the logo.
Not only is it embroidered, it has COLOUR!! It's so fancy it even has tiny yellow dots surrounding it. Making this the most colourful SHIELD uniform that Maria has.
This uniform seems to be made out of thicker materials, looks a bit warmer than the first (another reason I dubbed this the winter uniform). Feels more like a jacket, she probably needs a t-shirt underneath. It has a rolled collar and hidden zipper. Again she wears knee high boots with it. The fingerless gloves are a nice touch.
There's another set of uniform she wore in the deleted scene of Winter Soldier. Was only able to find one high res photo, the others are screenshots.
I actually quite like this uniform! It's greyish? Blue? (I can't tell). But look at that very subtle checkers pattern in that first photo! I love the little buttons on the rolled collar. The collar itself is half standing (which makes her look so cute đ) But also!! Do you see that very tiny SHIELD pin on her left collar?? Isn't it neat? That pin reminded me of Peggy Carter's uniform too where she had a pin on each of her collar. The thin belt across the waist of her jacket is also very old timey. So is the material⌠I think it's just plain old cotton.
We don't have a full view of this uniform, but I think it's a two piece. Peggy wore hers with a skirt. But I'm guessing Maria is wearing it with pants here.
Not sure if this counts. But she wore something like a uniform in spider man far from home.
So this is an all black two piece. I don't think it has a SHIELD logo.
The only comment I'm gonna make is that it has so many pockets!! (Probably a result of Natasha's influence⌠or Yelena's)
romanoffsvalkyrieâs get to know me â top three favourite characters   âł3. Maria Hill
God bless whatever made Cobie Smulders decide her niche was playing characters like Maria Hill, Dex Parios, and now this scientist from Room 104. Theyâre tough, theyâre sexy, they⌠wear the same shirt for a week at a time. Okay, I know that last one doesnât sound sexy, but she pulls it off.
!!!!! This totally reminds me of Maria Hill in a fic by @avesnongrata
BITE DOWN (E, 5224 words) by avesnongrata
Summary:
Seasoned monster hunter Maria Hill is tasked with tracking down a dangerous supernatural creature in the heart of the jungle. Her hunt does not go the way she planned.
âI could change your life, Maria. And all you need to do is trust me.â
I mean Maria is like muddy and dirty and soiled in it but also so very hot and sexy đđ my favourite Blackhill Monster AU â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸
