Black Fangirls Unite

Ain't I a fangirl too?

i’m speechless

This is how the system of white supremacy  operates. The media is used 2 create stereotypes like blk on blk crime. They need black men to fill jail cells for the Prison Indstrial complex

You know what? I’m tired of this. I do not know what exactly they are waiting for. I mean our government comes up with “reasons” to invade other countries, such as Syria, like their government is allegedly violating human rights or something like that. but… I mean for other countries, they do not even have to go deep to bomb the fuck out of this place, they can just look at our media. And this has been happening to people of color since the media has existed.

I’ll never forget this 👇🏾

Did a research project on this in undergrad and the results are extremely alarming because it’s not just in imagery, it’s in language used even in the law making process and within our own communities in a completely different way than expected.

Yuuuup talk about this in our media culture and society class where the exact same Katrina sample was used. White supremacy runs far too wide and too deep to be denied that it exists

OP was deleted for being “a Russian plant” for posting stuff like this. Know your history.

African Folktales Reimagined on Netflix gets a global release date

“Tales as old as time from across the African continent, reimagined and retold by a new generation of six storytellers, are coming to Netflix.

In partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), African Folktales Reimaged Short Films will launch on Netflix on 29 March 2023.

The anthology of six short films was launched as part of Netflix’s partnership with UNESCO to support the next generation of storytellers with resources, including a $90 000 budget and creative guidance by established filmmakers as mentors to bring their stories to life.”  - X

Today I learned 3D animation is a horror show outside the camera's field of view.

Just to add context, the director wanted the scene to use an 85mm lens which is slightly telephoto. Telephoto lenses give a very intimate feel because they compress the scene. Background and foreground objects can appear larger at longer focal lengths.

But that compression can also make objects look the wrong size in context with the subject depending on the framing.

This is done in live action as well using another person's hands in front of the camera.

This is also something that 3d artists do

News - If you live in the US, you can now watch all 200 episodes of the original 90s Sailor Moon anime on Viz Media’s Youtube channel for free! Viz also added all of the Inuyasha TV series and movies, as well as more recent shows like Death Note and Hunter x Hunter

This is what I mean when I say "fans pretend that they're powerless and have no choice about how they interact with canon/fandom to abdicate responsibility":

...but fanwork creators are not helpless, passive mirrors being held up to canon. We are active participants in responding to and reshaping the narratives that we have chosen to consume/buy from professional creatives and corporations.

Heteronormativity is also a story "we're told from infancy." Heterormativity is ALSO a "structure of power that we live and breathe and eat and sleep within... [a] political and social structure that defines our worlds."

AND YET we challenge that ALL THE TIME, as fans! Why does heteronormativity get to be an exception while misogyny, white supremacy, and other forms of bigotry get a pass?

The person I screenshotted has a WHOLE PHD and yet can't imagine fandom as any better than sheeple being led around by our noses and forced to drink from the well of bigotry.

Never MIND that there's actually a lot of media out there for fandom to "learn other narratives from" featuring women &/or PoC - but when given those opportunities, fandom either ignores that media or manages to make those stories about White Guy Bystander #3 ANYway. Or "this is really cool world building, what if we ignored the female protagonists / protagonists of color and used it as a neat au setting for our white male blorbos instead!"

Fandom is not passive. Fandom makes ACTIVE CHOICES.

And denying our agency wrt bigotry while ALSO celebrating fandom as a ~queer feminist utopia~ where we ~reclaim popular narratives~ and ~rewrite them according to our wildest whims~ is just exposing what our priorities REALLY are. It exposes what we think is immutable about society, what's "too hard" or "impossible" to challenge (even internally), and what we think is worth actively resisting.

Villains in Addams Family movies go to really unnecessary lengths to defraud them of the family fortune. These people just give it away on whims all the time. If I just walked into the house and started wearing their clothes and spending their money, they wold start introducing me as Cousin Intruder and forget there was ever a time I didn’t live with them.

There’s a whole plotline in the Addams Family Musical where Morticia and Gomez realize at the same time they each thought Grandmama was the other one’s parent and no one knows who the hell she is, and literally nothing changes because, well, she’s Grandmama now.

So much discourse about media representation is so Bad because people see representation as a goal instead of a tool.

I remember a few years ago when everyone was clowning on Raya because disney decided to put an additional pricetag on a movie already on a paid streaming service I got into a fight with someone on this website who was saying that you were a terrible person if that made you choose to pirate the movie, because Disney was finally choosing to make movies based on diverse cultures and if you cared about POC at all you HAD to watch it legally because if one those movies bombed they might decide that POC representation is not profitable and stop doing it and think of all the children of color who are FINALLY getting to see themselves on a big Disney movie and you wanna take that away from them?

And the reason why all these years later that particular argument sticks up in my mind above all the other stupid discourse I’ve ever engaged with is how absolutely dystopian and fucked up it seemed to me to have someone directly tell me that to Earn Representation it is our duty to show the Mouse that our cultures are profitable enough to keep selling them back to us on movies and merch and that that’s progressive somehow.

Use Firefox I am no longer asking. Every other cutesy alternative browser people suggest is just Google with extra steps. Stop it. Unless these people are Google undercover employees, in which case blow up your office

I’ve never even watched the mp100 dub, but damn…crunchyroll is recasting mob’s English dub VA because he tried to discuss union contracts for future projects. not even for mp100 s3, he was gonna do that under a non-union contract, but trying to discuss union contracts for later engagements got him booted from his role. Fuck crunchyroll in general but especially fuck them for that

How do I tell people that sometimes if you turn your shipping brain off you can interact with media better

Like I hate to say it but if you can’t engage with any media without descending into full-on fandom-style shipping at the expense of the themes, characterization, non-romantic relationships, and general content of the work. You might need to take a step back from shipping and maybe fandom in general. (Also to the people in the notes of this post who are acting like I said shipping in general is terrible: What this post is saying is that if you interact with all media exclusively through a shipping lens you miss a lot of stuff. I’m not saying don’t ship things, I’m saying use your critical thinking skills.)

“There’s more to media than romantic relationships” should not be a take which causes so much anger, and yet

back again to share yet another incredible article written by stitch that talks about the recent ‘colonizerji’ bullshit that went on in the mdzs fandom and how some people in fandoms in response to fans of color calling out racism LEAN INTO the racism and create EXTREMELY racist works to spite fans of color and remind us that in their minds, we don’t belong here.

give this a read! and also once again just read everything by stitch because SHE DOES NOT MISS.
