Listen I love the “Gojo and Suguru broke up outside of KFC” meme, iconic, dramatic, hilarious, but I like to think they never broke up because they weren’t (romantically) together in the first place. I think these two motherfuckers were just pining for each other, then everything went to shit —and oh there goes the love of my life.
I also like to think that they were both aware of their feelings for one other, but I think they knew that because of their roles as The Strongest, that the other could be used as a weakness against them, (hey I wonder if that ever happens later on) so it wasn’t possible for them to be together.
This doesn’t mean that they weren’t getting any.
We’ve been made aware about how archaic and stifling Jujutsu society and traditions are, so when Gojo calls Suguru his “one and only” it means so much more than just his best friend. Suguru was likely Gojo’s one and only best friend but also his first love, his confidant, his heartbreaker, EVERYTHING.
Personally I prefer to just see them as pining, not ever making any moves on the other, (because I desire tremendous pain) but I can also totally see them casually hooking up while trying to pretend it’s nothing more than just a casual hookup between bros. A way to let off the steam that's built up on missions and to relieve the crushing pressure of fulfilling societal expectations. Being at Jujutsu High was likely the only time the two of them could actually feel like normal in between their missions.
While being utterly head over heels for one another.
Do you imagine how crushing it must have been to have to watch the man you have so much love for walk away from you? The weight of every feeling you hold for him like your own cursed technique bearing down on you, unable to bring yourself to kill him even if you know it’s for the greater good of humanity? Unsure of what to say that could get him to stop, watching as you lose him for good.
Suguru obscures his face when he says that, and there are many, MANY ways to interpret that, but here's mine: "You won't kill me because you love me. If you do, you put Jujutsu society and the status quo above me, right Gojo?". So Gojo doesn't kill him. Because Geto is his weakness and he knows that so he exploits it.
I've seen people make a meme out of the scene where Gojo asks "hey are you ok Suguru, have you been eating?" because poor Suguru is currently going through a mental breakdown and his best friend (and more) isn't noticing.
But do you really think that's the case? Even without his six eyes, Gojo knows Suguru enough to know that he isn’t right, but he has to feign nonchalance. He can't show that he cares too much, because showing he cares for Suguru would mean someone could use it against him. Suguru brushes it off, and Gojo knows it's a barefaced lie, but being that they're not romantically together, he doesn't pry.
So what do you do when you're finally face to face with him again after so long? Seeing that he's fatally wounded, knowing it's you who'll have to finish him off? You tell him something that makes him freeze, and then start laughing. "At least curse me a little at the end.".
I think ieiry’s post about JJK 0 is brilliant so check that out here quickly, but Gojo makes clear that he will always love Suguru, that he loves him enough to not want to see him lose himself any further, and so he kills his one and only.
Edit: I watched JJK 0 and now I want to kill myself.
Edit 2: this link here takes you to the newly translated light novel and it helps cement the idea that they never confessed their feelings to one another. Crying and sobbing.
That is honestly the first thing i thought when i read that disney wanted to buy the Moomins. Now, it became an excuse to draw Sora. Moomin and Sora together is the purest thing.
