the rudest most helpful thing anyone ever said to me is "why do you keep hurting your own feelings long after [the person who once hurt you] probably forgot about it" like literally just dear god you've split me open so neatly my entire soul is just flopping around on the ground between us now but thank you

Just fyi if you're autistic/adhd and struggle specifically with this sort of thing, please know what what might be happening is something called perseveration, which is a common neurodivergent behavior that can include, among other things, revisiting emotions repeatedly and being unable to break loose from processing or managing stressful events.

Don't keep hurting your own feelings. But don't feel bad if you get stuck there, either. Something else could be going on.

Gen-3 Synths: What Canon Does and Does Not Actually Say

Synths! One of the most important concepts in Fallout 4, much of the game’s plot and thematic structure revolves around the Institute’s humanoid androids. The question of whether or not to regard synths as people is hugely important (and if you’ve been anywhere near my blog before, you’ll know I come down solidly on the “yes, duh” side of things.)

But that’s not why we’re here today!

There is a LOT of misunderstanding floating around about gen-3 synths. Many players miss basic facts about what synths are, what they can and cannot do, how they function and how they are made. Because this is such a massive game with so many perspectives and factions to explore (all with their own opinions,) it can be difficult to discern what’s true.

So the purpose of this post is to outline exactly what canon says about gen-3 synths-- the concrete facts as stated in the lore. Along with that, I’ll touch on a few concepts that canon doesn’t actually specify, open for interpretation however you see fit.

Massive Fallout 4 spoilers ahead, obviously.

Thankyou for this invaluable (especially to Fallout 4 fanfic writers) Technological Education Talk! Here are a few thoughts / heacanons of my own (Spoiler warning for my own fanfics, see my pinned post):

  • Nick Valentine can be seen eating, drinking, even smoking because he is based on the same kind of Gen 2 frame that Mr. Carter was - designed to blend in. Clearly, Nick doesn't blend in with that foam-latex type skin and those glowing eyes and Mr. Carter did, so they must have managed to create a very realistic, synthetic biological skin and maybe something akin to realistic eyeball contact lenses. Perhaps they decided that if they could make one biological on the outside, why not go the whole hog? If Nick was Gen 2.1, Carter was Gen 2.2
  • Young Shaun: Enrico and Janet Thompson's conversation reveals a lot:

[Janet] "He's supposed to be an exact replica of a child but that's all he'll ever be. It feels wrong."

Enrico Thompson: "I don't understand what the issue is. He is as real as any child I've ever seen."

Janet Thompson: "That! We gave him every capability of a real child, except a future. He'll never age, he'll never be allowed to grow up or have a family of his own."

Enrico Thompson: "So you're worried about what will happen to him?"

Janet Thompson: "He'll be a child forever...Sometimes I feel we have no right to do the things we do, just because we can is not a reason. I think we made a mistake."

If Shaun cannot physically attain an adult body, it does not mean he won't exactly age, not in the same way an adult body does *but* I very much doubt that the Institute scientists can entirely defy the law of entropy. Everything wears out.

I've tackled Shaun's situation in my own fic ('Vincent, Redefined').

  • Now for the big question:

Why put so much time and effort into creating synthetic humans?

Including Coursers, that will effectively, potentially, become apex predators of their creators if not kept very strictly in check?

  • The Institute are continuing to work on the Gen3 (I love how that looks like 'gene') design to make them disease and radiation-proof, to - if not eliminate - drastically reduce the need for food and sleep. They are redefining mankind, but why? Read on.
  • They have Gen3 slaves. The Gen 2s could probably do all the menial tasks that the Gen3's do, so why bother? They are taking them for a test-drive, putting the bodies through their paces. Remember, it's all about experimentation with The Institute. I also believe that Gen3 Synths are sterile to control their population and thus control the grand experiment but also that 'Redefine Mankind' hints at biological reproduction being superceded...
  • They don't want these synthetic bodies to have free-will. That's very important to them.
  • They initially lack power and get very excited when the Sole Survivor helps them to achieve their unlimited power goal. Why do they want this so badly?
  • Now we're getting close to what I believe is their true motivation:
  • There are very few children in The Institute, hardly enough to secure their future. They are not 100% shielded from the contaminated, irradiated world above. I believe that they are in decline. Was Father the only person with that illness? You have to wonder.
  • What could they do with unlimited power and near-perfect bodies that are untroubled by reproductive disturbance, (birth is a very risky experience, believe me) illness, ageing, disability etc.?

Here's where we bring Nick into it again: he was a real human being whose entire mental, emotional, personality and dare I say spirit, was downloaded into a synthetic body - successfully. Nick says he's just a copy but I always felt that he was a man with an entire prosthetic body and a will strong enough to survive that horror, unlike some of the other poor souls they tried to put in there.

I believe that the end goal is a Gen 4, a perfected synthetic biological body that the Institute scientists could migrate into, to conduct their experiments unheeded by the restrictions of their natural shells.

It was too late for original Shaun, they had not yet perfected the Gen 3 to an acceptable standard. The synth component would hold their 'holo-souls', allowing them to keep their individuality, (egos), knowledge and memory as a springboard for further development and when their body finally wore out, they could just print a new one.

Mankind, Redefined.
