Is the diversity support and exposure in comics something that happens passively, or do creative teams over at Marvel make a conscious effort to push it? Like for example, when a writer pitches an Avengers story, but there is no African American character on the team, will a character get swapped out in order to have more diversity in the team? I remember that when DC's New 52 came out Martian Manhunter got taken out and Cyborg was brought in, because DC wanted more diversity.
You can’t simply swap out a character and expect the story to work the same way. But the issue of diversity is one that we’re keenly aware of and that does factor into the decisions that we and our creators make every day. Going back a little bit further, when Jonathan Hickman came on to AVENGERS and began to build his team line-up, we definitely discussed the fact the neither of us wanted it to be nothing but a collection of white guys. So we worked that out together rather than making some last minute character-swap.
