[Image IDs: Image #1: Tweet from Rae (@/ raeOfStarshine) reading: Autism on TV: I say insulting things to people and when they are upset I argue with their logic instead of apologising

Autism in real life: a friend hasn't spoken to me in a few days so I am analysing everything I have ever said tot hem in case it was rude and they hate me now

Image #2: Tumblr tags reading: #tv characters with autism always seem to carry this unshakeable confidence in themselves #like they've never been truly rejected by people they care about #whereas every autistic person i know myself included #has at some point had to internalise the message 'there is a line at which point people will get sick of you.' #this line is invisible and you don't know which of your natural behaviours push you closer to that line #and which are fine to do and help build relationships #so you had a childhood of just be constantly surprised when suddenly you find the line #and it's a bad surprise because now you've lost something or someone you care about and it's your fault #you might not be able to get it back either - you just have to accept that life is like stumbling through a minefield in the dark #sometimes you'll get to the other end. sometimes you'll lose an arm or a leg. and you have no idea which or when. #and this means that a lot of us do the logical thing and don't move #we don't socialise we don't stand out we don't show any sliver of personality in case that's the step that blows us up #we toe the ground so carefully hoping we'll be able to pick up on the danger before we die from it #but there'll always be those you don't see coming #and then you end up lonely and people tell you to make friends you have to be yourself #being yourself is synonymous with deciding to just start running. you know you *could* in theory do it. #but your body's so aware of the danger it physically won't let you #so what now? /End ID]

so many autistic characters act like it's their first day with neurodivergence

Well, yeah. Most autistic characters are written by neurotypical people, either based on their own experience with neurodivergent people or a second- or third-hand instance of the same. That's how these situations can look from the outside.

To us, we've crossed an invisible line, and our only feedback comes from the people who seem to get offended out of nowhere. We're careful, we tiptoe around things when we remember to, we try to be as clear and specific as possible so that we don't accidentally push the Breach Of Social Contract button, and then something totally fucking innocuous screws us anyway.

But to them, we're doing something obviously incorrect, without an ounce of the fear or hesitation one would expect from such an obviously incorrect thing. They don't notice the effort of avoiding all those other pitfalls because 1) if you do it right then it's invisible, and 2) not all of those pitfalls are actually pitfalls. All they see is someone who declares fucking war on them and doesn't seem to give a shit; in their mind, without a conscious decision even being made, it's either malice or stupidity... and this person has been so over-the-top careful about everything else that it MUST be deliberate.

Keep selection bias in mind as well. Yes, some neurodivergent people manage this stuff by being shy or avoiding social situations in general, but that leads to a much lower chance that they'll be the autistic person a screenwriter bases their token character on. Running-through-the-minefield types absolutely do exist, and the ones who preserve social connections anyway - to the degree that they might be dragged out to a Hollywood party and wind up in a 5-minute conversation with a guy who really wants to write the next Data Startrek - are inevitably the ones with thicker skin, more rigid coping mechanisms, or both.

It doesn't mean any other ND-presentation is invalid or incorrect, it's just not what gets seen. It sucks, but... maybe having an explanation might help?

(and, of course, because the incorrectness is so obvious, obviously they don't need to tell us where we went wrong, because obviously we already know)

I miss the days when, no matter how slow your internet was, if you paused any video and let it buffer long enough, you could watch it uninterrupted

If you use Firefox, you can go to the about:config page, search for "media.mediasource.enabled" and double click on it to set it to false. After you restart Firefox, all youtube videos will load entirely even when paused! This also affects other streaming websites :)

There's more to do actually, now

go to About:config find media.mediasource.enabled and toggle it to false find media.cache_readahead_limit and change it to 9999 find media.cache_resume_threshold and change it to 9999

additionally if you'd prefer mp4 to webm

also in about:config, find: media.encoder.webm.enabled media.mediasource.webm.audio.enabled media.mediasource.webm.enabled media.webm.enabled and toggle them all to false

note! this will limit video to 1080p

and use https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/dont-accept-webp/ to kill WebP Fuck Google

Parenting hack via my father: He was a single father and very stressed all the time. We were pretty crazy kids and getting us to do anything was a hassle. He made up a game to get us to eat veggies/try new things, where my siblings and I were bunnies and he was a farmer protecting his crops.

We would have to sneak into the kitchen and ‘steal’ his crops (cut up veggies that he put out for us), while he wasn’t looking (ie: making dinner/getting work done)

If he saw us, he would get really theatrical and ‘chase’ us with a broom, hollerin’ about pesky rabbits and all that, while we would run away and scarf down the veggies in hiding. Then the game would start again.

A carrot has never tasted so good.

(As an aside, I don’t know how he got any work done in the end, but I don’t know if he actually cared so long as we ate lol)

Amazing stupendous wonderful I’m stealing

No child should ever utter these words. Remember that this is not a unique case, every child in gaza has been affected by this genocide, mentally and physically, either by losing their loved ones, losing their limbs, or losing their lives.

Don't stop advocating and demanding a ceasefire no matter what. Speak up, keep up the pressure. They need us.

The way they're acting like "ceasefire" means "go blow yourselves up" is just. A ceasefire is nothing. It's less than the bare minimum. It's not "rebuild what you destroyed." It's not "pay the victims remaining of the families you killed." It's not "rehabilitate Gaza." It's not any of the demands that could be made in this situation. It's just... Stop. Stop killing them. And even that is treated like it's so fucking extreme and if you call for it you must want Jews to die. Politicians with an agenda can really demonize anything.

ooh i have a nice fun fact!

Static was WILDLY popular in Brazil (a country where the population is over 50% black) and we had re-runs for YEARS on open television. Everyone who was a kid in the 2000s knew and loved him. As a result, every single Brazilian Con has a LOT of static cosplayers!

So, a couple of years ago, Comic Con Experience (the biggest con in Brazil, which is actually also the biggest con in the world!) invited Static’s creator Denys Cowan as one of the guests of honor.

Now. Thousands of people attend his panel. And cosplayers went NUTS because they could show their Static cosplay to the creator himself! What none of us expected was Debts Cowan’s reaction:

He cried on stage.

He had never seen Static cosplayers - especially not so many of them! And he had no idea the show was popular here! No one ever told him his character was so beloved! Years and years of reruns and he had no idea! He obviously created the character with his experiences and his community (Black North Americans) in mind. Still, he accidentally touched a whole other community of black people who could see themselves on the screen as a superhero!

Anyway he is a lovely person and one of the best, most memorable guests we had. And I think this is a nice reminder that your art might touch people you can’t even imagine would when creating it.
