Your Aggressively Wholesome Older Sister

you’re going to love again, find a job again, create art again, do what you love again, feel powerful again. you’re going to be back on track. i don’t know when, but you are going to feel like yourself again, eventually. this isn’t the end. hang in there.

The term and concept of "rent lowering gunshots" has seeped into my mental vocabulary, and I've welcomed it there. Something I'm up to is gross and weird? Good, keeps the rent low. Keeps judgy people out. Post weird shit on your blog, do weird shit to your hair, be as fucky as your heart ever wants to be. If you're not the one making the profit, make yourself unprofitable. The aposematism of brightly coloured creatures is there to warn predators, not friends.

You have no moral obligation to make yourself palatable for those who would consume you.

I don't care how old you are, this is RELEVENT TO YOU.

I'm going to share with you four ways to age gracefully in terms of physical movement. My name's Sammy; I've been a physical therapist for 13 years, and I work in outpatient orthopedics, and these are the things that I have consistently seen over the last decade that creep up on people and they don't realize that they are becoming less able to do something until I ask them, and then they're like 'oh my gosh', they're so surprised they can't do these things, and they actually do have a pretty big impact on your day-to-day function. If you're a millennial or a Gen Z, I would definitely save this so you can share it with your loved ones - your family, parents, grandparents, whoever that may be.
Number one: you should be able to stand on one leg - single leg balance - for up to 10 seconds, okay? Being able to stand on one leg for an increased amount of time improves your ability to take a nice long stride so you don't end up taking a shuffling gait, and decreases your likelihood of falling significantly.
Number two: be able to stand up from a chair without using your hands. Okay, this is basically doing squats in your function every day. You don't have to go to the gym and do squats - you can do squats - but every time you get out of a chair, think, 'I'm not going to use my hands'. If you can do it - see if you can do it! - if you can't, we've got some work to do. If you can, do it for the rest of your life and don't stop.
Number three: be able to get off of the floor. Now, I know this may sound ridiculous for some people that are younger, but it is a huge fear of people who are getting older that they can - if they do fall - they won't be able to get up off the floor, because they haven't done it in years! Okay, so if you're at an age where you can get on up and down off the floor, do it every single day for the rest of your life. That way, you'll have the muscles that enable you to be able to do that for the rest of your life.
Number four: Now, everyone may not agree with this one, but I truly believe you should always be able to lay on your stomach. Unless you've got some sort of a medical restriction, there's no reason you can't lay on your stomach, sleep on your stomach. It helps make sure you can keep your back nice and straight. If you can't lay on your stomach without your back hurting, we've got some stretching to do, okay? Also think about it: if you lay on your stomach to sleep, you have to turn your head to the side. A lot of people can't lay on their stomach because they can't turn their head, because they didn't realize they've lost their range of motion in their neck. So being able to lay on your stomach will make you take note if, all of the sudden, you're like, "why is my neck stiff?". You will realize these things about yourself that otherwise you'll go through life, driving your car, and think you have a good range of motion looking in your rear view mirror, but you're turning your whole body, not just your neck.
Those are my four things. If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments; I can elaborate for you.

Are you trapped on tumblr right now?

Is there something you planned to do before you got trapped in the endless tumblr scroll?

Are you yelling at yourself to get up and do the thing, but you can’t, because you’re trapped in the endless tumblr scroll?

Consider this your save point.

Put tumblr down, stand up, stretch, and go do the thing you planned to do. Future you will be incredibly grateful.

Things people in the notes have been able to do thanks to this post:

  • eat breakfast
  • go to bed
  • get out of bed
  • take a shower
  • write
  • practice
  • watch Superman Returns and write a paper on it
  • retain shreds of sanity

I need y’all to know that you’re doing amazing, and I’m so glad that I was able to help you break out of a procrastination loop you did not want to be stuck in.

And don’t forget to drink water!

when travis mcelroy said “what if you could just cut out the bullshit and do good recklessly?” and when marc evan jackson said “now go do something good” and when chidi anagonye said “i argue that we choose to be good because of our bonds with other people” and when brennan lee mulligan said “you, mortal beings, are the instrument by which the universe cares. if you choose to care, then the universe cares. and if you don’t, then it doesn’t”

a very good addition tbh
