seems that Chrome has around 60-65% market share, so itโ€™s not totally dominating the market yet but itโ€™s worrying that weโ€™re basically reliant on Apple and Microsoft to hold the line.

Does Firefox not count for anything?

about 10% and falling, but perhaps that can change, I just donโ€™t see how.

Chrome edging towards 70% on desktop, Microsoft has thrown in the towel, Safari obviously rules iOS, Firefox exists only as insurance for Chrome.

Please, please Iโ€™m begging you, use firefox.

PLEASE install firefox as a mobile browser and then run adblock on your mobile browser itโ€™s so good I promise.

Look.

Look.

I know Iโ€™m a total grind about open source stuff but browsers are the PERFECT place to learn to love open source software and for so long FireFox was a major part of the browser market and sometimes if you want to see what kind of fuckery google is up to it helps to see the kinds of things they block in firefox and just

Thereโ€™s an organization that makes free, excellent, safe software that doesnโ€™t collect and market your data but for some reason two thirds of the world uses a google product and most of the leftover population uses apple and just

I promise, firefox is so good - the extensions are incredible look - I can use lightbeam to see what sites I use and how they connect to other sites (bottom right should give you an idea how much time I spend on tumblr)

or I can look at ublock origin and see that itโ€™s blocked over 2 million requests since I installed it or I can run the facebook container extension and stop facebook from tracking me and you know what I bet you can do a lot of that on chrome too but youโ€™re doing that while chrome itself is tracking you and gobbling up your activity for google and

firefox is so fuckin great and itโ€™s such a great ambassador for other open source projects please be a big old fuckin nerd with me and use firefox and run a bunch of funky extensions and customize the fuck out of your web experience.

FIREFOX.

I just love firefox okay.

this!!!

if you want to keep your privacy under control and use open-source software even more, you should absolutely consider installing Linux as your operating system! nearly all of the Linux distributions are completely free and open-source and pretty much none of them have rampant advertising like Windows. i use kde neon personally and i absolutely recommend it!

Iโ€™m not going back out in the world until thereโ€™s a vaccine.ย

I read this last night and it kept me up

Reblogging because of the very important info at the end of the article - if you experience symptoms of a stroke, seek help IMMEDIATELY because even large strokes are treatable, but time is of the essence.

I just grabbed this from Google because the article didn't have any easy info on stroke identification. Remember the basics:

F- face, is it under control?

A - arms, can you raise them both at the same time?

S - speech, can you talk or are you slurring?

T - time is of the essence, go to a hospital IMMEDIATELY

This is scary stuff. Stay informed lovelies.

youโ€™re sitting across from me in a shitty diner in anywhere, america, and i watch you pour too much creamer in your coffee and i think โ€œi love you.โ€ you look up, catching me staring, and for a moment i think iโ€™m brave enough to say it, but i take too long and the moment passes. i take the balled up straw wraper and flick it at you, pretending that was my plan all along. you laugh. i never want to go another day without hearing that laugh. i think i will have all the time in the world to say it.

I get a lot of questions fromย  people who want to teach their kids environmental stewardship and my advice is to get them passionate about the nature around them. Distant wildlife is exciting and cool! It can teach them to appreciate, but I find it rarely teaches them to value.

Value and respect come from recognizing your place in nature and your ability to both help and hurt.

Go outside and just move some rocks and let them hold some worms. Let them get muddy. If they squash a bug, ask them why. Tell them the bugs live here too.

This sounds silly, but itโ€™s tried and true. Each time Iโ€™ve seen a kid smash a bug, I sayย โ€œwhy did you feel that bug wasnโ€™t allowed to be alive?โ€ Never in an accusing tone, never judgmental. Ask them gently, honestly. They might be dismissive and bashful at first, but if you ask them again, if you sayย โ€œI like bugs, and I think itโ€™s good that they are alive,โ€ they start to think. You can see it happen. You can see them begin to consider life theyโ€™ve probably been told before doesnโ€™t mater.

Tell them what you like about bugs. If youโ€™re afraid of bugs, tell them that too. tell themย โ€œI find them a little scary, but this is why theyโ€™re still good.โ€ Tell them they donโ€™t have to like something for it to have value. Tell them even the things they donโ€™t like have value.

Every time a child says theyโ€™re afraid of bugs, or dirt, we go outside, and I find a worm (most people react best to them because they donโ€™t have a bunch of little legs), and I hold it and tell them some simple little facts. I ask them if they want to hold it. They almost always do. Itโ€™s okay if they donโ€™t want to. Never force the interaction. Itโ€™s vital to form positive experiences and associations.

I wipe some mud on my hands. I ask them if they want some mud on their hands. If they do, I give them some mud. I tell them what worms are doing down their in the ground, which anyone can learn on google to share.

We move rocks and find beetles and spiders. Theyโ€™re delicate, so we donโ€™t pick them up. We watch them. I ask them what they imagine beetles think about all day, and they always make me laugh with their ideas. I tell themย โ€œmaybe, maybe thatโ€™s what beetles think about.โ€ Let them imagine.

Look up the birds where you live. Yes, even theย โ€œboringโ€ ones like pigeons and sparrows. Talk about what the eat, where they go at night to sleep. Ask them where they think birds sleep. In beds like us? Theyโ€™ll usually tell you no, in trees! Kids want to teach as much as they want to learn.

We talk about grass and trees. We talk about what makes the world alive. Their young minds change and make new decisions about how they want to exist in the world.

One day, if all goes well, value and respect grow into a sense of responsibility and obligation.

Do this again and again.

A final thought:

If a child asks, and you donโ€™t know, tell themย โ€œletโ€™s find out together.โ€ Search on your phone.ย

You donโ€™t have to know much yourself to teach stewardship. You only have to know and teach that itโ€™s important to be curious, and above all, to root your curiosity in kindness.

i donโ€™t like my country but iโ€™m very protective of the wellbeing of the people in it

and by people i mean all people. the definition of a person has zero to do with citizenship status

America is not her politicians, sheโ€™s her people.

You donโ€™t like the government, but you are protective of the country.

I like my countryโ€™s people, I donโ€™t like its institutions and if given the opportunity would deposit all the politicians in a wood chipper

Do yโ€™all know where the phrase โ€œeat the richโ€ comes from or do you just repeat it cause you heard it elsewhere?

Itโ€™s not a bad thing, I just saw someone say โ€œwe never said who would eat the richโ€ and realized a lot of yโ€™all might not have heard the full quote

Itโ€™s from Rousseau and itโ€™s โ€œWhen the people shall have nothing more to eat, they will eat the rich"

And, well, thereโ€™s a lot of people with nothing to eatโ€ฆ

The poor cried,

"We are starving. There is no more bread, and we have nothing to eat."

The rich man said,

"Not my problem you don't work for your bread,"

as if he did not snatch away the grain by his own greedy hands and create filling bread for his own overflowing mouth.

The poor cried,

"We are dying. There is no more medicine, and we're all ill."

The rich man said,

"Not my problem you don't take care of yourselves,"

as if he did not buy all the medicine and raise prices so high

the gods themselves would not

be able to reach.

The poor people

stopped crying,

and the rich man was satisfied...

Until they came knocking at his door one night;

their faces were sunken,

their flesh decaying,

their eyes sightless.

They were monsters

of the rich man's

own making.

As they devoured his flesh,

the rich man cried,

"Please, spare me!"

The ravenous zombies said,

"Not our fault

you fattened yourself

for slaughter."

Holy fucking shit

I was always taught that god influenced wars to make the people he wanted to win, he influenced movements such as the civil rights movement and womenโ€™s movement, becuase these things wouldnโ€™t succeed without divine backing. With that said, how come the gay movement is suceeding if itโ€™s โ€œevilโ€?

The Flu That Dare Not Speak Its Name

YouTube has partially lifted the ban on saying the word โ€œcoronavirusโ€œ.

Can we appreciate the fucked-up-ness of the situation?

Google demonetises videos that reference political issues, sex, violence, and tragic events. Google also has these โ€œfake newsโ€œ boxes that link to authoritative sources like snopes or Wikipedia.

And these mechanisms both got triggered by people saying โ€œcoronavirusโ€œ in videos. In Februrary, that was not a big deal, bit for the last three weeks, it kind of has been. YouTubers tried to explain why they were not filming in the studio, or tried to talk about their daily life in isolation.

And YouTube demonetised them for saying โ€œcoronavirusโ€, and then said they are not censoring anything per se.

So YouTubers said โ€œDue to current events I cannot talk about, I am recording this video at home.โ€œ As long as you donโ€™t say โ€œcoronavirusโ€œ you can briefly allude to the coronavirus.

And that had the effect of perpetuating the idea that YouTube is censoring information about the coronavirus, even in completely unrelated videos. I have heard a baking YouTuber, a woodworking YouTuber, a game developer YouTuber, and a letโ€™s player all mention that you canโ€™t say โ€œcoronavirusโ€œ on YouTube, in a way that makes a bigger deal out of the whole situation. One of them called it โ€œLord Voldemortโ€œ.

I donโ€™t even know if uttering โ€œcoronavirusโ€œ once will get people demonetised. I guess it was a meme among YouTubers, and it survived because Google arenโ€™t telling us how the demonetisation algorithm actually works.

I suspect the reason they are changing course now is that basically every current event and everyoneโ€™s life is somehow connected to the novel coronavirus, unless youโ€™re North Sentinelese. If they kept going like this, theyโ€™d probably run out of videos to show ads on.

somewhere in the recent D&D videos Iโ€™ve uploaded, I say COVID-19 only to be reminded by another player that weโ€™ll be demonetized if I say that

(followed immediately byย โ€œweโ€™re not monetized anyway, fuck itโ€)

In my other videos, I interview people about projects theyโ€™re working on, including talking about estimated time of completion for physical things. what am I supposed to do, just goย โ€œwill the Late Unpleasantness cause delays?โ€*

more topically, one of the askreddit TTS channels that ends up in my feed has a recent video withย โ€œC*VID-19โ€ณ in the title, but I donโ€™t know if that change is from them or the original thread.

*i mean, i doย call it the late unpleasantness, but thatโ€™s me being a dork, not me trying to stay monetized.

I donโ€™t think itโ€™s just Youtuberโ€™s affected. I think I saw an article that while traffic to news sites is up, advertising revenue is down because brands donโ€™t want placement near negative content, such as coronavirus news.

Youโ€™d think some company would be willing to like, advertise that theyโ€™re supporting getting this vital information to you in a time of crisis, and doing their part to help us all get through this, etc.

Not just YouTubers are affected. But YouTube handled this in the worst possible way. They censored it by drawing attention to the censorship, by making people who would not have minded at all constantly mentioned that you canโ€™t say โ€œcoronavirusโ€œ.

Imagine news anchors on TV saying โ€œyou know what I mean, but I canโ€™t say it or advertisers would get madโ€œ.

and, like โ€ฆ itโ€™s one of those on-the-nose censorship things that are virtually guaranteed to not even get anything going into the direction of what youtube wanted to achieve with this?

everybody, even the most casual of watchers, had found out about youtube censoring their creators like that. there were major news sites reporting on it, and, I believe, even print news would have a few lines about it somewhere.

everybody started saying โ€œyou-know-whatโ€ or other euphemisms like โ€ฆ immediately. it didnโ€™t even take a day I believe. those who wanted to spread misinformation about it continued to do so, as their viewers didnโ€™t care either way. the smaller ones werenโ€™t monetized to begin with.

or maybe that was their goal? it kinda makes sense โ€ฆ they get to publicly say they did some token compensation in times of crisis without needing to actually change anything or having to relinquish much of their advertising income.

itโ€™s the censor who gets bribed every time they let something through telling their superiors โ€œthese people are just too good, slipping stuff by me even though I am working the hardest I can censoring everything!!โ€

huh I only use YouTube as a music player so I didnโ€™t hear they were censoring coronavirus, thatโ€™s absolutely wild

I think I spoke too soon about this:

Imagine news anchors on TV saying โ€œyou know what I mean, but I canโ€™t say it or advertisers would get madโ€œ.

According to the Guadrian:

Ministers are demanding advertisers start placing their promotions next to online news stories about the coronavirus, amid enormous concern in government at the potential financial collapse of British news outlets.
Many brands are using keyword blocklists to stop their adverts appearing next to stories about Covid-19, meaning that even though news websites are getting record traffic from readers they are barely earning any money from the clicks.

So on TV itโ€™s even worse, except thereโ€™s actually humans in the loop so you canโ€™t even allude to the thing?

government pressuring companies to run ads on coronavirus stories so that news outlets donโ€™t fail, because they provide a service vital to society that canโ€™t possibly be funded any other way, what a well-designed system.

I suppose like other politically connected industries the private owners can keep the profits in the good times and the rest of us can bail them out in the bad times.
