On this day 85 years ago the last known thylacine, ‘Benjamin’, died of exposure in Beaumaris Zoo, Tasmania. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) just recently released a restored and colourised version of footage taken of Benjamin at the zoo, it’s amazing to watch, I used it as a reference for painting these two quick little illustrations. Lyrics are from the song ‘Deuteronomy 2:10’ by The Mountain Goats.

Characters were definitely the high point of Power of Three, the apprentices felt like an actual class when there were 9 of them at the same time; that's the most there has ever been as far as we know. And yet they all had personality and actually interacted with each other even after becoming warriors. More of this in Warriors please ;_;
“[pitching the proposal for Mononoke-hime (1997)] There cannot be a happy ending to the fight between the raging gods and humans. However, even in the middle of hatred and killings, there are things worth living for. A wonderful meeting, or a beautiful thing can exist. We depict hatred, but it is to depict that there are more important things. We depict a curse, to depict the joy of liberation. What we should depict is, how the boy understands the girl, and the process in which the girl opens her heart to the boy. At the end, the girl will say to the boy, “I love you, Ashitaka. But I cannot forgive humans.” Smiling, the boy should say, “That is fine. Live with me.” ― Hayao Miyazaki

Because this is apparently stick up for wolves day.
Wolf reintroduction in Yellowstone has changed the ecosystem *significantly*.
One remarkable thing that was not predicted that demonstrates how interlinked these things are:
Wolf eat elk.
Elk eat fewer willows.
Willows become healthier.
Number of beavers increase.
Number of songbirds increase.
Overall health of streams increases.
Number of fish increases.
Water table stabilizes.
This is called a “trophic cascade” and we normally see them as bad things. But a positive trophic cascade is an amazing thing, and apparently nobody predicted this one.
What they didn’t predict was that wolf predation would keep elk on the move so they wouldn’t overgraze a specific area.
When the elk overgrazed the willows, they removed the best source of food for beavers during the winter.
Once that stopped happening, the beaver population rebounded and it turns out beavers are pretty good for the entire ecosystem.
An AU where Hollyleaf gets to actually talk to someone who understands exactly why she did what she did much sooner & in turn prevents her from feeling totally isolated and acting out as a result.
One of the things I resent most about being Animal Brain Apex Predator trapped in Maximum Productivity Society is that I have to work when the weather is gross, instead of following my natural instinct to burrow myself into something dry and soft and sleep until Optimal Foraging Conditions
It is dark and cold and wet and miserable and I have a warm dark quiet hideaway full of food and drinking water that is safe from interlopers and for some ungodly reason instead of holing up there to conserve my energy, I am standing up in a brightly lit beige room for several hours. A possum wouldn't put up with this shit. I'm going to bite someone
