maybe gerard was doing specifically americana drag that just so happened to be feminine. because the femininty is not exaggerated! but the americana is! the nurse is not feminized, she is just feminine. however, the nurse is specifically english/american and from the 30s to 50s (the pin, the dress style, the hat). the cheerleader is specifically vintage, the riot scarfed woman is specifically jackie kennedy. thinking on it, the only slightly feminized outfit was joan of arc, with the ahistorical chainmail dress -- but even that doesnt feel like an exaggeration, but rather an interpretation. a deliberately feminine one as to not be confused for anyone else -- who is the most famous armoured woman? you know her instantly.
all these outfits call back to a time when only women could wear them. men have almost never worn these outfits because the time passed and now that it is slightly safer, men will wear modern feminine clothing. but gerard wanted vintage, he wanted to breach that temporal barrier. we have always existed
