Beware of Dragon

Jillian, 37, Canadian. Lover of nature, science and history.  I'm part of many fandoms, but current obsessions are Chernobyl HBO, Our Flag Means Death and all things Tolkien. Sometimes I yell about hockey (though I always tag)

Its crazy how many people think everyone who works in tv and film is rich. The only rich people are the execs and the tippy top percentile of directors and actors. Listen to any actor who is well known for a tv show and they’ll tell you they make more money from cons than what they made on their show.

Support the writer’s strike and when the director’s guild and SAG go on strike support them too.

I have taken to calling this the “Larry, I’m on Ducktales” effect.

I see Hollywood is now very into the idea of buying something once and then owning it forever and being able to make infinite copies. Which. Isn’t quite the message they imparted upon me in my childhood. In the spirit of their own long-held stance:

I’m Brazilian and my strongest memory relating to a roundabout was when me and my family were walking near my grandparent’s house. My little brother asked what the circle in the ground was and my dad explained the concept of a roundabout, “you’re supposed to go around it, so the road is more organized, look, there’s a car coming, you’ll see how it works” and that car just. Fucking ran over it. Dude just went forward like the road was straight. We never saw anyone do that again and I’m still not over it

The difference between a strike and a boycott is the focus of what is being withheald

In a strike the supply is being withheald because the workers aren’t producing whatever it is.  It works by having the masses demand what the companies cannot produce and therefore, if the company wants to continue providing whatever it is in order to continue making money, they have to listen to worker demands

In a boycott the demand is being withheald because the masses aren’t buying or engaging with whatever it is.  It works because companies, obviously, need to actually sell things in order to function.  The point is to make the company change something about a product in order to appeal to the masses again

That’s why you shouldn’t boycott when a strike is on (unless the union says so) because it kind of cancels out the strike.  If there is no demand then witholding supply is meaningless - again, unless the union says so, since that means they factored it into their industrial action plan and believe it would be beneficial

I know people want to help but the reaction to call for a boycott whenever there’s a strike just kind of…… doesn’t

My dad told me this story once, of a time when I was just old enough to be allowed in our country yard without direct supervision, as long as he or mom could see me out the kitchen window. I played right at the edge of the tree row at the back of our back yard all afternoon, before finally coming in. He'd asked me what I'd been doing all day, and I had apparently told him that I'd been "playing with a baby snake." He asked me if it was really small then, and that's why I thought it was a baby, and I answered that, no, it was "almost as big as him". This is when he gets alarmed and asks, "why did you think it was a baby, then, if it was so big?"

"Because, daddy, it had it's own rattle built into it's butt!"

apparently, I had been "playing with" a 4-5 foot timber rattler for *hours*, and managed to live to tell him the tale. Sadly, I don't actually remember this... but I absolutely believe that I would have done exactly something like that.

One wild thing about Universal cutting up all those trees is I first heard about tree law like, maybe a month ago. One of my mutuals reblogged that one comic and my reaction was sort of mildly amused, but also a little confused as to why tree law seemed to be so popular of all things

It really feels like some great karmic entity leaned down and said hey here’s the set up to a joke that won’t get a punchline for a little while. But when it does you’re gonna love it

I was being cancelled because apparently it was classist to put feathers on dinosaurs.

Both dream me and irl me were very confused.

it might have been a dream, but feathered dinosaurs being linked to an ideology isn't that uncommon. Them being viewed as "leftist", "woke" or "gay" has occured several times.

I collect these examples.

feathers are seen as feminine, dinosaurs are traditionally masculine. it makes sense that this has been a problem. now, blaming The Jews for it all, *that* came out of left field, but I've seen it in multiple places

I'm pretty sure this means you're allowed to take credit for this, as you are both Jewish *and* a paleontologist... 🤔

oh I have and will continue to do so

just had the weirdest interaction. this off-leash Yorkshire Terrier wobbled up to sniff my ankle, and then its owner said “the vet wanted to euthanize her”

and I was like “……oh”

and she said “4 years ago. she had a stroke, but I went to church and prayed to the Virgin Mary, and now she can walk again. but sometimes she drops, which is why I have this stroller”

and I was like “oh, okay.” I didn't know what to say after that, so I was just like "it's a cool dog" and kept walking

Strokes in dogs are super rare, so I’d bet a while can of coke that the Yorkie actually had an episode of Geriatric Vestibular Syndrome.

They look scary, with the dog falling and circling all of a sudden, but 90% get better in a fortnight as long as they’re not vomiting and dehydrating.

Having dealt with the general public for 13 years now and seen this many times, I reckon this lady already had a narrative in mind and just tells people her preferred version of events.

Recovered dogs are usually partially deaf and may have occasional balance problems.

The Very Hungry Rust Monster is a mini-comic I made a few years back. I’ve seen it floating around Tumblr without attribution recently, so I’ve uploaded a higher-resolution version, properly credited.
