I love how many people there are in the world people who pick acres and acres of fruit people who tame wild horses people who bring babies into the world people who scale mountainsides w only their hands people who build engines people who can identify a bird by the sound of its call alone people who dye fabric with dirt and flowers and vegetables people who drive across the country to deliver everyday necessities the rest of us never think about people we don’t even know are out there

I was wondering the same thing here’s the Real Estate Business Boy take

I remember someone using this same argument about the california coast to argue why they were a climate change skeptic and I do not have any inside-track knowledge here but I think what's actually happening is some kind of safety-in-numbers herd mentality. people see lots of the Right Kind of People (upper-middle class, white, moneyed, whatever) doing something and reason that well, any catastrophe that affects all those people is guaranteed to get a bailout, right? they're Normal Upstanding People doing Normal Upstanding Person Things so the government won't let them lose too hard, so they feel safe as long as they're in the middle of the pack and all the threats they face are systemic and threaten everyone around them

idk how well this will work once insurers have pulled out but I bet it will kind of work, politics are stupid. the interesting part is that this kind of dynamic means that when people decide to get out they're all going to want out at the same time

When the climate problems in Florida become too big to ignore, they will demand a huge infrastructure megaproject on the federal government's dime to fix it. And they will get it, because Florida is a swing state and Disneyworld is there. idk yet what it will be— dams and levees won't work because southern Florida is a limestone sponge and the water will just come up through the ground— but with a trillion dollars of other people's money to spend, they'll figure out something. That's what real estate investors are banking on, and they are probably correct.

The twentieth century was a such a crazy trilogy. Part one was nihilistic and darkly humorous, a really cynical look at politics and humanity. Part two was something totally different, a serious and gritty take on a classic pulpy good guys vs. bad guys narrative, with some real high drama and moral complexity, and a climax that perfectly wrapped up its themes while also delivering a totally showstopping set piece moment. Part three was the most interesting of the series, the longest and most cerebral, with the bombast of the first two installments replaced by brooding psychological drama. I was also glad to see the return of a dark sense of humor to the series, the third installment picked up on the nihilistic absurdity of the original and turned it up to eleven. People complain about the ending but I honestly think it was fitting—an end to the high drama and return to relative "normalcy" without a real resolution of the series' deepest conflicts was fitting, I think almost any other ending would have been trite. All around great century, definitely the best in human history so far, 10/10.

I watched the live with the CEO, here is the tl;dr

The good news:

  • Chronological dash is here to stay! Whether you have to toggle it weekly or new users default to “For you” was not elaborated on but at least that’s confirmed.
  • Custom themes are here to stay! Once again, may be buried for all I know but, for sure will remain an option.
  • Search updates are in the works!!!!

The neutral news:

  • Tumblr is seriously in the red financially and needs more support, Ad-free for example is not widely used
  • They would not comment on the suggestion to bring back NSFW behind a paywall (which we all know would get them a boatload of money)
  • They’re possibly going to add a donation system like Ao3 and Wikipedia.
  • They would “rather not” sell data to make up the costs
  • Most of staff are pre-2010 tumblr users including the CEO who joined in 2007, so they do actually use the site and have for a long time

The bad news:

  • Condensed reblogs/removing reblog chains is going forward. The reason cited was to meet “certain expectations” of users coming from other social media, which isn’t good.
  • Disability features (specifically turning off flashing ads for epileptics) was met with a request to purchase Ad-free

Overall it was more chill than I expected, @photomatt and @zingring seem to be far more in tune with the userbase than u/spez.

Under the bad news column:

I did ask our ads team to investigate any kind of vibrancy or flashing on ads - we do not want to accidentally trigger seizures or cause distress with flashing etc. Buying ad-free (or gifting ad-free to someone else) is always an option, but that is not the solution (and of course, some folks simply can't afford it). Sorry that it sounded dismissive in the session! That was not my intent.

Condensed reblogs/removing reblog chains is going forward.

Depending on how that looks/if it can be turned off, that could kill the site as surely as removing chronological following only feeds would...

We want reblogs, not rooted posts with comments under them. At that point you are just Facebook...

reblog chains where users iteratively produce something funny or informative are practically this site’s main cultural export i don’t know what kind of tepid soup is sloshing around in your skull that you’d even consider getting rid of that

“oh they’re not taking away chronological dashboard, well everything’s okay then” they also said in the post they’re making reblogs collapsed (like comments on twitter) so you won’t see the full conversation in a post. they also won’t get rid of tumblr live despite it being an annoying and cancerous data-miner that isn’t legal in much of the world. they won’t even let you opt out of tumblr live for more than seven days. they implemented a terrible photo viewer that mimics tiktok and makes it so you can’t zoom in on images. they took away the ability to view prev tags. they’re making it so you have to sign in with your email to view almost any thing on tumblr. they’ve already made it so you have to sign in to send asks, even on anon. they’re slowly phasing out custom blog themes.

the things that make tumblr at all usable and favored by us– the older web blog features, the anonymity– that is still being taken away. it HAS been being taken away for some time now. i am urging you people to reveiwbomb the tumblr app. force them to acknowledge that users do not like these changes.

The motivations for this guy are so fucking funny. Low empathy antagonist. Likely has undiagnosed ADHD. Obsessed with games and gaming. Literally bails on his destroying Japan in its entirety plans because he got bored with blowing himself up with a fighter jet. Finds Kei and then tells him he got bored and he's going to go to another country cause he thinks Japan's gaming scene sucks rn. Doesn't actually really even care about politics or anything like that literally is just obsessed with the action of being at war because it's like a game to him and it's the only way he gets excitement, but he does genuinely like games too, and this is a major motivation for him so he's being completely serious here when he says this. That's why Satou is one of the greatest villains ever made. Literal, actual war crimes gamer grandpa
