formerly blasteratyourside. ray (rachael), she/they, late 20s. AO3. mostly a star wars blog. sometimes i gif stuff.

i'm ray, this is mostly a star wars blog (with some mass effect, other misc). currently obsessed with Cal Kestis and having a Din x Cobb moment. i've been getting back into writing fanfic, primarily for The Mandalorian and the 2000s Star Wars Legends books by Jude Watson, because Ferus Olin is near and dear to my heart.

hello and welcome, i hope you enjoy your stay ❤️

Everything you’ve ever created is copyrighted, actually.

According to the US Copyright office:

Everyone is a copyright owner. Once you create an original work and fix it, like taking a photograph, writing a poem or blog, or recording a new song, you are the author and the owner.

Additionally, they say:

Copyright exists automatically in an original work of authorship once it is fixed, but a copyright owner can take steps to enhance the protections. The most important step is registering the work. Registering a work is not mandatory, but for U.S. works, registration (or refusal) is necessary to enforce the exclusive rights of copyright through litigation.

So anytime you see a LLM/AI that uses any sort of web scraping to fuel its databases tell you that they don’t use copyrighted material, just know that they are lying outright. Every blog post you write, every funny tweet with a “spark” of creativity? That’s yours. Forever. AI is stealing from us, and whether or not you’re ok with that for yourself, you should respect the people who are not okay with it.

Also, I don’t personally trust a single word Google says about Bard and privacy based on their sketchy approach to privacy in the past.

Sources on webscraping:

Source that demonstrates GMail has previously scraped email contents for LLMs: Gmail Smart Compose: Real-Time Assisted Writing

Source on Google just being sketchy about privacy in general: NPR - Google pays nearly $392 million to settle sweeping location-tracking case

If you want to seek alternatives, look for end-to-end encryption, independent audits, and published whitepapers.

You can check out privacytools.io for a roundup of decent alternatives to any service you currently use, and a lot of this stuff has evolved to be quite user friendly at this point. No longer are alternatives to the mainstream corporate web sketchy and ugly and difficult to use, so please give them a chance!

Note: I personally use Proton for most things and am getting into Skiff Pages specifically for document collab, though their Android app does need some polish. (Desktop web is faster than GDocs though!)

I always knew something was fucked up with that artificial sugar shit. Never liked it, I was genuinely confounded by the number of people who claimed it tasted identical.

NO.

this is about the IARC not the FDA. the IARC (international agency for research on cancer) is part of the WHO (world health organization) and not a food safety agency. they classify "agents" (chemical, physical, or biological entities or exposure circumstances) based on how likely they are to cause cancer:

Group 1: Carcinogenic to humans (126 agents)

Group 2A: Probably carcinogenic to humans (94 agents)

Group 2B: Possibly carcinogenic to humans (322 agents)

Group 3: Not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans

this new classification of aspartame as 2B "possibly carcinogenic to humans" is the result of a review of available studies, and mostly intended to encourage additional research. it is not aimed at consumers/the public and it does not take dosage or frequency into account.

for context: apart from aspartame, group 2B includes things like "aloe vera, whole leaf extract", "carpentry", "magnetic fields", and "traditional asian pickled vegetables"

"occupation as a hairdresser or barber", "very hot beverages at above 65°C" (149°F), and "consumption of red meat" are all classified as 2A

and Group 1 includes "alcoholic beverages", "epstein-barr virus", "salted fish", "processed meat", and being a painter.

anyway. this is fearmongering and disinformation. stop using memes for news and dont reblog "news" posts without sources.

where is that net zero information quote

me, today: "I feel pretty great!"

also me: watched captain america: the winter soldier twice, wrote more in 24 hrs than I have in the last 2 weeks combined, not tired even though I only had ~6 hrs of sleep and it's currently 2am

Trever Flume re-remembering his lost memories is so fucked up actually. There is a whole erased person buried in his sub consciousness that has seen things, terrible, unimaginable things to vanilla Trever, a person who mourns his lost companions who experienced so much heartbreak that he decided he does not want to Be anymore.

STOP IT OP YOU ARE KILLING ME
