About a week ago I posted this.

I’ve been getting horrible messages like this in my ask for months, including:

After getting the message saying “Just go kill yourself” I was completely done dealing with this person’s horrible messages and replied with just an “Okay.” and logged off tumblr.

About a week later I logged back on with 17 messages in my ask, most of them from the anon. I scrolled down and at first when I logged off, the anon messaged me things like

I scrolled up more and all of a sudden they started sending me more and more messages like

This was extremely surprising to me. I thought “After all those horrible messages you sent to me for MONTHS about hating me and wanting me dead, you say ‘sorry’ and that you ‘cant be responsible for someone’s suicide’?”

But I guess the lesson goes like this:

DONT TELL ANYONE TO KILL THEMSELVES UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED FOR WHAT MIGHT ACTUALLY HAPPEN

This needs to be reblogged. I couldn’t scroll past this if I tried, I got a message like that but not for me, it told me to my friend to kill them self, I was livid! I didn’t answer it because a message like that doesn’t deserve an answer but I don’t see what is so funny about telling someone to kill them selves! I really don’t! It’s sick and it’s wrong. This person though, I take my hat off to you. You taught that bully a lesson.

Fact: Bullycide is a crime that has enough victims and impact to have its own proper and recognized term.

Bullycide Prezi (This is a presentation I did in my Child Development Class for my teaching license, and by the end of it I didn’t receive applause – just a horrified silence from my classmates and teachers at learning a new word.) It’s a few years old so some of the mentioned laws have been overturned, but the three cyberbullying cases I studied are still relevant to this.

In New Zealand, they have laws on the books making it a crime to encourage or insist someone commit suicide. It is akin to manslaughter.

In Massachusetts, a teen encouraged her boyfriend to commit suicide and was charged with ‘engaging in a course of wanton or reckless conduct’ and involuntary manslaughter. Source 

In the United States, almost every state has legislation against ‘encouraging suicide’ or ‘promoting a suicide.’ Source 

The anonymity of the internet (as well as state lines) prevent cyber bullies from being properly prosecuted, despite these laws being in place. It’s too big of a problem to be fixed by prosecuting every single cyberbully in the world – it’s something we have to try and fix, by being good to each other and seeing that goodness reflected back on us, as well as standing up for those who ARE being bullied.

Please, please, please, don’t say ugly things to each other. Don’t try and hurt each other with your words. Be kind to one another, don’t say things you can’t take back. Saying sorry doesn’t fix it; you have to avoid saying it in the first place.

Don’t wrinkle each others papers.

And if you’ve been told to go kill yourself, if you’ve been told that the world is better off without you, please don’t believe it. Reach out to others before you do anything, no matter what you feel, and listen to your support system, your friends, your family – not the strangers on the internet who only want to cause harm.
