Such behavior, which would be irresponsible today, was almost inevitable back then, says Lütz. “In contrast to today, science left the bishops completely in the lurch.” In order to achieve justice, the historical perspective is therefore crucial. In 1970, for example, the leading German sexologist Eberhard Schorsch declared at a hearing in the German Bundestag that non-violent sexual contacts between adults and children did not harm healthy children. "That was the prevailing teaching until the end of the 80s!", Says Lütz.
If we're talking about standards 2000 years ago, fine those were probably different. But the 80s? This is the poorest attempt to relativize abusement by the church... I would love to hear your thoughts on this, cause I don't know what to say.

The study looked at more than 38,000 sets of personnel records from the country's dioceses, as well as criminal records and interviews with those who say they were abused and clerics accused of abuse.
It found documentation of abuse of 3,677 minors by 1,670 clerics — 4.4 percent of all clerics whose personnel records were reviewed. Among diocesan priests, that figure was 5.1 percent.

Many of the accusations at the highest levels aren’t even about doing the raping, they’re about doing the covering up.

A Roman Catholic archbishop in Germany offered his resignation and two other high-ranking officials were suspended in the wake of a report that found decades of “systematic cover-up” in the church’s handling of accusations of sexual abuse at the hands of clergy members.
Lütz is saying they didn’t know it was wrong, The Pope is saying they did know it was wrong and everybody was covering shit up too.

This religion has inspired no moral growth since the 70s/80s, since it still doesn’t foster in him the humility to stop making excuses and expect the church to confess their sins honestly, admit their mistakes and unreservedly beg for forgiveness. You know, what they expect their own followers to do.
Trying to blame “science” - the same science they’ve denied, ignored, demonized and rebuked for hundreds of years - for them not knowing not to rape children is truly pathetic. Deflection. Misdirection. The church previously tried to blame the gays, so he’s certainly taken their dishonesty and moral cowardice to heart.
But Cardinal Brandmüller claimed that only a “vanishingly small number” of clergy had committed abuses. He said the real problem was homosexuality and claimed it is “statistically proven” that there is a link between homosexuality and abuse.
I’m not even going to bother to delve into the work of Eberhard Schorsch to see whether or not Lütz is accurately representing it, It’s actually irrelevant. We can accept his work without undermining the point. Even if we accepted Schorsch’s (purported) claim - without throwing up - that children could consent to “non-violent sexual contacts between adults and children“, they didn’t. And Lütz appears to be saying that neither he nor the Catholic church itself can tell the difference. Lütz’s argument is a self-own.
Catholics need to stop trying to invent these stupid excuses for the crimes and atrocities of their church. They don’t dig the church out, and instead just dig themselves into the same hole.
