note the reason you don't admit to buying in cash is because the salesperson makes commission off the amount of money you'd be expected to pay over the life of the loan, including the gargantuan interest amount, so they're incentivized to give you a much better price on the car knowing that the interest will more than make up the difference and help clinch the sale. if you say "I'm buying cash", no discount.

keep in mind that some purchase contracts are canny to this tactic and will make the discount only apply if you're financing, and the financing will renege on the discount if you pay off your loan within six months or some other fixed timeframe. read contracts carefully. you can still make out like a bandit if you time it carefully and never tell the salesperson what you're planning on doing

what if you had wake up everyday to go to a job you hated to make money for an asshole that doesn't respect you to afford basic living utilities and the occasional luxury and that was the way the entire world functioned, would that be fucked up or what?

take your grimdark dystopian fantasies someplace else 🙄 like people would actually just go along with it and willingly participate in the system that controls and disciplines them? too unrealistic

This goes past grimdark and into grimderp. The whole premise requires an entire planet of idiots.

okay but what if they didn't notice cause instead of having everyone's needs met people formed a cult of success where they thought that suffering and poverty made the lucky few's escape from poverty somehow “good” and “worth it” and they belittled everyone else that didn't have the luck nor means to improve their life and also this entire system was slowly killing the planet and depleting natural resources?

What if the system was maintained by implicit and explicit violence against the people and they weren’t idiots and didn’t deserve or invite any of the horrors visited on them by the powerful? And blaming the suffering for their own suffering in the end perpetuated the idea individual acts can cause collective action? And you can’t win because what could be read as rejection of the system ultimately accepts that system’s logic implicitly?

would that be fucked up or what?

Truly!!!!

So glad we don’t live like that…..

blows up a random stranger with a rocket launcher for no reason then falls to the ground weeping histrionically & receives the tender attention & support of everyone present

Will never see eye-to-eye with anyone less than the people who treat their pets like wandering ronin instead of valued family members. Like oh there goes Bronson our uncollared, chipless chocolate lab out of the permanently open back door again. If he comes home in three days after subsisting on garbage we'll be mildly thrilled to see him again but if he succumbs to his natural predator, the 2006 Toyota Camry, that's just the circle of life

It’s not that I don’t LIKE the Fandom Popular Pairings, it’s that I find the assumption that everyone ships them and the general all-consuming nature of said pairings to be kinda exhausting,

It’s not that I don’t LIKE the Fandom Popular Pairings, it’s more that sometimes people solely view the involved characters in terms of the ship and in the process do an incredible disservice to the characters involved

i love ‘jefferies tubes’ as a piece of star trek canon… like i just think the most satisfying trek honor would be to have a commonly used piece of starship design named after you and for it to sound like a real thing

For people who may not know, Walter Matt Jefferies did concept art for Star Trek. He created the design of the Enterprise, the Klingon battle cruiser and much more. Here’s several of his pieces

This page has much more of his artwork

every engineer who has ever crawled up inside a tube curses this man internally, not knowing why, even as we cheer at the very mention of his name because we know exactly how much mischief people on starships get into inside jefferies tubes.

what if we meet intelligent alien life out there but the novelty eventually wears off and we’re back to “i wonder if we’re alone in the universe or if there’s more than just humans and galorphasians”

Analysis of data from dozens of foraging societies around the world shows that women hunt in at least 79% of these societies, opposing the widespread belief that men exclusively hunt and women exclusively gather. Abigail Anderson of Seattle Pacific University, US, and colleagues presented these findings in the open-access journal PLOS ONE on June 28, 2023. A common belief holds that, among foraging populations, men have typically hunted animals while women gathered plant products for food. However, mounting archaeological evidence from across human history and prehistory is challenging this paradigm; for instance, women in many societies have been found buried alongside big-game hunting tools. Some researchers have suggested that women's role as hunters was confined to the past, with more recent foraging societies following the paradigm of men as hunters and women as gatherers. To investigate that possibility, Anderson and colleagues analyzed data from the past 100 years on 63 foraging societies around the world, including societies in North and South America, Africa, Australia, Asia, and the Oceanic region. They found that women hunt in 79% of the analyzed societies, regardless of their status as mothers. More than 70% of female hunting appears to be intentional—as opposed to opportunistic killing of animals encountered while performing other activities, and intentional hunting by women appears to target game of all sizes, most often large game. The analysis also revealed that women are actively involved in teaching hunting practices and that they often employ a greater variety of weapon choice and hunting strategies than men.
These findings suggest that, in many foraging societies, women are skilled hunters and play an instrumental role in the practice, adding to the evidence opposing long-held perceptions about gender roles in foraging societies. The authors note that these stereotypes have influenced previous archaeological studies, with, for instance, some researchers reluctant to interpret objects buried with women as hunting tools. They call for reevaluation of such evidence and caution against misapplying the idea of men as hunters and women as gatherers in future research. The authors add, "Evidence from around the world shows that women participate in subsistence hunting in the majority of cultures."

Tell us more about dinosaur scales? 👀 Saw the misconceptions post mentioning how dino scales were super weird actually and now I'm curious what kinds of things were up with them!

Avatar

so the important thing to remember here is that the evidence indicates the ancestral dinosaur was a fluffball. it seems as though, based on this evidence, that different groups of large dinosaurs evolved scaly body covering separately to deal with the problem of being bigger and thus overheated by protofeathers (or regular feathers. I don't want to get into that atm). so that means that different forms of scaly covering evolved in dinosaurs many, many times (it's unclear how many times)

so the weird thing about dinosaur "scales" (technically they're scutes, not scales, but I'll just say scales for sanity reasons) is just how not uniform they are. yes, lizard scales vary a lot, but they generally follow similar rules. dinosaur scales have no rules.

these are the scales on the back of the head of edmontosaurus, a hadrosaur. they're small, usually. they don't overlap. they are vaguely octagon shaped. sometimes there are bigger scales instead.

these are the scales of a sauropod. notice how they are way more variable in size and shape, with some having five ish sides and some having six ish sides. they still don't overlap. they don't tesselate quite as well as hadrosaur scales, and just seem to fill in as much space as possible. they're also bumpier.

here. have the sheer variety of scale designs in different Saurischians, the group that just kept evolving newly-megafaunal clades over and over again.

and they weren't all small! here are the scales (and SPIKES) of triceratops. notice their much larger size.

stegosaurs/ankylosaurs, ceratopsians, large ornithopods, sauropods, ceratosaurs, megalosaurs, allosauroids, and tyrannosaurs all evolved to be big from small fluffy ancestors independently, and they all did it in a different way. and sometimes they just messed around with that way for fun.

the diversity of dinosaur feathers is equally matched by the diversity of dinosaur scutes (scales).

we need to free the nipple so bad im so serious we should be so far past the point where girl children are told they have to keep their shirt on while their brothers and cousins get to run around shirtless or women shamed for breastfeeding or trans men needing top surgery to go outside shirtless without getting judged at best and arrested at worst or girls getting taken out of class for not wearing a bra like this should be a priority

I'm posting it here because even when they tried to explain it it was still confusing to me and I had to search and find for the actual process to actually opt out, so here's the ACTUAL paragraph explaining what to do:
