What are some of the greatest/most impressive feats of strength in Arknights’s story?

Avatar

Taking the overall narrative and worldbuilding into account, I believe the most effective aspect of Arknights' narrative is that they managed to make Terra feel like a breathing, living world and setting instead of a vehicle for the point-of-view character to exist in and act upon. This is specially remarkable for a mobile gacha game, as settings in these tend to be exactly that sort of vehicle instead of world that give any hints of existing when outside the player's immediately vision. The way I like to think about it is, "if a tree fell somewhere in this setting while my intended point-of-view or self-insert character isn't there to see it, did it make a sound?”. In Arknights, Girls' Frontline and SIGH Epic Seven (credit where it's due), the answer feels like a yes to me, whereas in every other game of this kind, it feels like a no, if you know what I mean.

This is intrinsically tied to the cast of characters: It is an inevitability that games where a guiding principle is to release an immense number of characters throughout its lifetime will have characters that will never have any relevance whatsoever besides existing as a minor piece in the world, and Arknights is not immune to this. Even other works of a different base nature and with a much smaller casts will be victims to this: In Trails of Cold Steel, for example, you have a pretty big cast of playable characters, some of which are very well developed and have a lot of screentime and development, and others who are Gaius Worzel. However, this leads to two aspects of Arknights as a narrative and as a game telling a story and fleshing out a world that I appreciate:

The first is that those characters that do get used, are for the overwhelming majority fun and interesting to see and accompany throughout their narrative, and rarely for me, I include the usual point-of-view character in this, Doctor. I tend to have a pretty big dislike, if not disdain, for characters you're meant to self-insert into, I sincerely cannot stand them. Doctor definitely has a big of a self-insert nature to them, but there's also a lot of the Doctor that is actually pre-established, such as them being a weirdo, tending to be very effective but also causing troublesome aftermaths that others then have to clean up, and being particularly good at bonding with assassins and underworld types, among other things. More importantly, Doctor is not present in most side-stories. This is fantastic and leads to the second aspect I appreciate.

This second aspect is that the cast has legs to stand on without needing the protagonist or POV character. You'd think this is a problem mostly limited to gacha games due to their usually flimsy narratives and structures, right? Except, this is actually a huge problem in pretty much every corner of narrative art! I can think of countless comics, manga, cartoons, anime, light novels, novels, and much more, eastern and western, that just tend to have worlds and casts that center entirely around the protagonist, for the protagonist. Whether it be a US author writing out their post-apocalyptic hoarder fantasy or a Japanese author detailing the trials and tribulations of a relatable nobody that a myriad of girls want to have sex with, and even some other pieces of art perhaps not so comically easy to make fun of, it's a consistent aspect of them that the protagonist is the center of the universe, both in terms of events and what the rest of cast thinks about, talks about, and takes action upon. Obviously, this results, in my opinion, in weak worlds and weak casts that have no legs to stand on. I appreciate that even without Doctor around, Arknights does a good job of having protagonists of their own little stories in the side stories: Olivia Silence is a joy to follow when she takes the lead in a Rhine Lab story, Kroos has been one of my favorite characters to be able to experience events through with the Sui stories, Skadi and the Abyssal Hunters are exciting to watch in Abyssal Hunter stories, and the latest event as of the writing of this post filled me inspiration, seeing Reed star in a character piece that tells us more about someone so immensely reticent to open up. It's by having interesting world events occurring throughout Terra that don't have the input of Doctor, and thus lets us see more and more of this huge cast of characters taking the lead that I think is a fascinating experience for me as a reader that keeps things fresh. It's even allowed me to come to appreciate characters I initially didn't care about, such as Bagpipe and Magallan, and see, in most games of this nature, if I don't care about a character frame one, it's probably going to stay that way because, well, if I didn't care about what their limited assortment of pre-cooked lines had to sell me on, then I'm likely not going to care about that character likely not showing me a new aspect of themselves impactful enough to change my mind in an event they'll likely just be an accessory to.

It's upon this base that I think Arknights stays interesting and fresh: A solid foundation that I can agree with and that keeps things dynamic and interesting. Specific events and story beats that I think are interesting are a natural result of these baseline aspects, but it all traces back to the cradle, to these baseline aspects that facilitate those cool narratives in the first place.

reading the receipts on how bethesda resorted to fucking extortion in a pathetic attempt to force Leona (a trans woman) to resign without pursuing a discrimination lawsuit by holding her fucking surgeries hostage & holy fuck

her experience at bethesda was a harrowing but depressingly familliar one filled with a sudden loss of respect by her superiors, public outing by her manager, falsified reports on her yearly review to convince corporate that she was a liability...

i struggle to find the words to descrive how i felt going through it all.

they were HOLDING HER SURGERIES HOSTAGE TO COERCE HER TO RESIGN

fuck this fucking industry. you cannot fix this. it is beyond saving

Fallon and Chloe used to be best friends, but last summer they hooked up right before Chloe left for college, and after a series of misunderstandings they are now not speaking to one another. A year later, Chloe’s back home from school, and Fallon is doing everything in her power to avoid her–which is especially difficult because their moms own a business together, a gourmet ice cream truck where both girls work.
When their moms have the opportunity to make a presentation to some venture capitalists in Texas–something that could seriously expand their business and solve all their money problems to boot–it’s up to Fallon to work a series of food truck festivals across the country. But she can’t do it alone, and Chloe is the only one available to help. As tensions heat up again between the two, will Fallon be able to keep her cool?

What i've been learning thru my research is that Lawn Culture and laws against "weeds" in America are deeply connected to anxieties about "undesirable" people.

I read this essay called "Controlling the Weed Nuisance in Turn-of-the-century American Cities" by Zachary J. S. Falck and it discusses how the late 1800's and early 1900's created ideal habitats for weeds with urban expansion, railroads, the colonization of more territory, and the like.

Around this time, laws requiring the destruction of "weeds" were passed in many American cities. These weedy plants were viewed as "filth" and literally disease-causing—in the 1880's in St. Louis, a newspaper reported that weeds infected school children with typhoid, diphtheria, and scarlet fever.

Weeds were also seen as "conducive to immorality" by promoting the presence of "tramps and idlers." People thought wild growing plants would "shelter" threatening criminals. Weeds were heavily associated with poverty and immortality. Panic about them spiked strongly after malaria and typhoid outbreaks.

To make things even wilder, one of the main weeds the legal turmoil and public anxiety centered upon was actually the sunflower. Milkweed was also a major "undesirable" weed and a major target of laws mandating the destruction of weeds.

The major explosion in weed-control law being put forth and enforced happened around 1905-1910. And I formed a hypothesis—I had this abrupt remembrance of something I studied in a history class in college. I thought to myself, I bet this coincides with a major wave of immigration to the USA.

Bingo. 1907 was the peak of European immigration. We must keep in mind that these people were not "white" in the exact way that is recognized today. From what I remember from my history classes, Eastern European people were very much feared as criminals and potential communists. Wikipedia elaborates that the Immigration Act of 1924 was meant to restrict Jewish, Slavic, and Italian people from entering the country, and that the major wave of immigration among them began in the 1890s. Almost perfectly coinciding with the "weed nuisance" panic. (The Immigration Act of 1917 also banned intellectually disabled people, gay people, anarchists, and people from Asia apart from the Chinese...which were already banned since 1880.)

From this evidence, I would guess that our aesthetics and views about "weeds" emerged from the convergence of two things:

First, we were obliterating native ecosystems by colonizing them and violently displacing their caretakers, then running roughshod over them with poorly informed agricultural and horticultural techniques, as well as constructing lots of cities and railroads, creating the ideal circumstances for weeds.

Second, lots of immigrants were entering the country, and xenophobia and racism lent itself to fears of "criminals" "tramps" and other "undesirable" people, leading to a desire to forcefully impose order and push out the "Other." I am not inventing a connection—undesirable people and undesirable weeds were frequently compared in these times.

And this was at the very beginnings of the eugenics movement, wherein supposedly "inferior" and poor or racialized people were described in a manner much the same as "weeds," particularly supposedly "breeding" much faster than other people.

There is another connection that the essay doesn't bring up, but that is very clear to me. Weeds are in fact plants of the poor and of immigrants, because they are often medicinal and food plants for people on the margins, hanging out around human habitation like semi-domesticated cats around granaries in the ancient Near East.

My Appalachian ancestors ate pokeweed, Phytolacca americana. The plant is toxic, but poor people in the South would gather the plant's young leaves and boil them three times to get the poison out, then eat them as "poke salad." Pokeweed is a weed that grows readily on roadsides and in vacant lots.

In some parts of the world, it is grown as an ornamental plant for its huge, tropical-looking leaves and magenta stems. But my mom hates the stuff. "Cut that down," she says, "it makes us look like rednecks."

Invasion ecologists are taking seriously how many of our commonly-used terms reinforce xenophobia.

I had a discussion with someone I work with about the term "pioneer species" and the rather inaccurate and questionable colonialism-tied implications.

I prefer "disaster species," but "pioneer species" is still the typically used term.

*sitting straight up in bed* anakin's descent into the dark side could have been much more believable and tragic had they cared to show how being a slave affected him and his perception of himself, authority figures, and the republic as a whole. the foundation was there to tell a truly heart wrenching story of a boy who once freed from slavery was forbidden from ever seeing his mother and joined an order which once again made him subservient to others (and even having to refer to them as master) and slowly learned that while the jedi were "peacekeepers", that did not necessarily mean they always supported justice and did not make efforts to stop slavery in the galaxy. and so as he grew to associate the jedi order as merely an extension of his subjugation, when he is told of the sith order (not about immortality to try to save padme) and how freedom and self determination are core pieces of their identity he grew curious of their practices and would slowly become seduced to the dark side with the promise of true power. all of this combined with the unhealthy way he views the individual vs the state (believing that palpatine should have More power and that everyone should give up their rights so that order can overtake the chaos of individuality) and how he views tuskens as being animals, paints a horrifying picture of a young man who having been denied the ability to choose his own destiny he seeks to control others because he internalized that the "truly" free people are the ones who have power and had influence and status, with others who were in some way subservient to them. his obsession with becoming a knight on the council a manifestation of his need for control and once denied to him (in addition to other minor or major transgressions against him by the jedi) he became more vulnerable to palpatine's influence and eventually gave himself over to the darkside entirely, becoming darth vader: the most powerful sith in the galaxy, feared and obeyed by everyone he meets.

i mean i can tell you why. it’s because marvel abuses their VFX artists. they give them footage that’s almost impossible to make look good, they make enormous story and design changes right before release dates, they have their artists work overtime for months because they are not in a union and they blacklist workers who try to unionize. you can read more about it here.

I want to make a rebloggable version of this thought since I had this happen last night and this morning on the same artwork, on a different artwork last week, and in general it's something I have to deal with more often than I'd like.

If you have an issue with a character or a ship, for fucks sake, don't air out those grievances on someone's creative work!!

It's fine to not like something, but it's really hurtful to leave a reply or tag it, or as was the case these last two times, put your opinions in the body of the post underneath the artwork. The artist or writer or gif maker can see that!! It sucks!! It's hurtful! And especially if you put it in the post itself it can potentially generate a discussion about criticizing the character or ship on what was otherwise a post celebrating it.

If you see a work on your dash and think, "I don't like the subject of this work" please just make your own post or complain to your friend. But stop putting those grievances on someone's creative work and shitting all over their good time. I would rather someone not reblog my art at all than to reblog it with a rude comment.

Reblogging this again because someone thought my art was a cool place to describe their fantasies about murdering a character they don't like :) Enjoy being blocked! Make your own fucking post next time!!!!

i've had to deal with this a number of times as a creator during my prolonged prison sentence in fandom and i dont really have anything to add except this:

ocd is not fucking destigmatized

"intrusive thought" gets thrown around by assholes talking about putting strainers on their heads or stepping on a leaf who in the next sentence will say "if your thoughts are about actually hurting people they should put you in a psych ward". compulsions and rituals get seen as proof you're "crazy". ocd insight CAN be delusional, even. pocd and sexual ocd is especially demonized, though even something as "harmless" (to others. not *us*) as contamination OCD is still mocked, belittled, and seen as a sign something is fundamentally wrong with you. I have seen people twice my age advocate for violence against anyone who thinks the way I've been forced by my mental illness to think since i was 6, maybe 7 years old.

OCD is not destigmatized.

It genuinely makes me sick how perisex TMEs will tokenize intersex people and our experiences to dismiss Transmisogyny Theory and related terminology, like, y’all are so guilty of gender essentialism the way you talk about “women and AFABs,” but as soon as transfems point out the fact that experiencing transmisogyny requires a rejection of manhood, it’s all “AFAB intersex people can experience transmisogyny too!” Like, yeah, they can. If they’re also assigned male later in life and reject that assignment. Y’all act like a huge part of intersex people’s oppression isn’t the fact that we are coerced into conforming to a rigid sexual binary from the moment we’re born. We don’t get to just exist as intersex people, we are also forcibly assigned male or female and are often violated in extremely traumatizing ways in order to uphold that assignment. Just like transphobia, y’all are willing to ignore that an entire axis of oppression exists just so you can claim that what you experience is somehow transmisogyny. You will never understand what it’s like to be transmisogyny-affected and it is so obvious from how you talk about what you think transmisogyny is.

I just want to clarify something about this post real quick: I posted this to my main blog instead of here because, yes, it did come from a place of anger, and I try to be the least openly emotional on this blog that I can be. Of course, I do fail at that sometimes (I’m only human, yadda yadda). But please don’t use that as an excuse to ignore the message of this post, or of any other post made by a transfem about transmisogyny. So often TMEs use the excuse that a transfem is being “too emotional” or “too aggressive” to justify ignoring and dismissing what they have to say. Yes, I could have worded this better. Yes, I could have been “nicer” about it. But, as a transfem and an intersex person, I feel like I have the right to be angry when perisex TMEs weaponize intersex people against transfems and against transmisogyny theory.

FYI if your employer does this, if they have done it for a long time especially, you and your coworkers could be owed huge amounts of unpaid wages and it would be an easy suit if there is a paper trail like this and your employer is placing strict requirements on your behavior while not at work. Employment lawyers generally work on contingency. Just food for thought.

Apparently neopets not only managed to ditch the NFT bros, but with the closure of the Jumpstart brand weeks ago, neopets is now completely independent for the first time since the early 2000′s, got millions in a new investment deal and are currently installing a flash simulator so that all their games and animations work again.

fyi tumblr is fucking over people with custom domains

if you have a custom domain set, DO NOT UNTICK THE BUTTON on blog settings. you’re not allowed to add it back. (nope, that’s not mentioned anywhere on blog settings itself.) if you switch hosts and need to update nameservers, congrats! you’re fucked

custom domains were a feature that’s been available over a decade, but they’ve been unceremoniously removed. the idea of “legacy” domains is a joke

this is doubly egregious because they absolutely could be selling domains for people that don’t have one, while still allowing those of us that already had a domain to keep using ours. they also don’t even allow you to pay to use your own. so if someone bought a domain specifically to use on tumblr, if they accidentally untick the button then poof! they’re fucked because they can’t re-buy their own domain from tumblr

it’s honestly pathetic how much of a transparent cash grab this is at worst, and how badly implemented this was at best. this is what happens when you accept incompetency as a modus operandi bc “lol quirky hellsite”

i highly, HIGHLY recommend not investing in this feature due to that incompetency and lack of transparency

Strange that it never occured to me. There are times I've been so upset that I've stamped around while cussing, that I've lain flat on the floor and groaned for as long as I had breath, that I've ranted my frustration aloud in an unhinged monologue, that I've swung my limbs about in a fury. All until I'd vented enough to just ... resume my normal life.

And if I'd had not the privacy of my home, I'd either have had to bottle that all up ... or open it all up where the public could scrutinize my every move. It really is a privilege to not be constantly on display like that.
