friendly reminder that thorin oakenshield is a hero who helped his people to survive in harsh exile, who gained renown in battle when he was barely out of his teens, who reclaimed a mountain from a dragon with the help of twelve dwarves, one hobbit and one wizard, who has proven time and time again that he leads by example, who overcomes mental illness with the help of his friends and redeems his mistakes with all he has to give: his crown, his kingdom, his life.

the reason the hobbit films got trashed by critics is because they went in expecting a fantasy film. but the hobbit films are not fantasy films. if you go into a viewing of the hobbit hoping for a fantasy film you will leave disappointed. if you watch the hobbit with the (correct, superior) view that they're an overly long and dramatic sitcom about a rotating cast of gay friend groups all using their beef with each other to avoid acknowledging their own interpersonal issues, however,

tolkien gif battle → 01. favourite character (vs dungeonsdeepcavernsold)

The King beneath the mountains, the King of carven stone, the lord of silver fountains, shall come into his own! His crown shall be upholden, his harp shall be restrung, his halls shall echo golden to songs of yore re-sung. The woods shall wave on mountains and grass beneath the sun; his wealth shall flow in fountains and the rivers golden run. The streams shall run in gladness, the lakes shall shine and burn, all sorrow fail and sadness at the Mountain-king’s return!

If you’re a minecraft fan and a lord of the rings fan and Don’t know about Minecraft Middle-Earth, one of the longest-running massive build projects that’s been going on for almost 11 whole years working to recreate all of middle earth to scale in minecraft, then you’re really missing out on some of the coolest shit out there. MC originally raised the build height limit for the first time in part because of MCME iirc. They needed the world height raised for the two towers and MC delivered. I’ve been following this project since day one and it never ceases to take my breath away. Have some screenshots! and, yes, this was all built in minecraft.

I know I’ve said it before but really, the Hobbit is nothing but a Heist Story where the twist is that they’re stealing from a dragon! It’s literally Ocean’s 11 but it’s Thorin’s 14!

The story is about a sheltered fussy gay old bachelor learning to become a master Burglar! There’s a sequence where the protagonists all get sent to fantasy-prison by the elf-cops and Bilbo has to break them out! This is why the Hobbit is such a good children’s book. because it’s about how crime is fun and the best way to get out of your comfort zone and make friends is by pulling wacky heists!

I think my favorite moments in the Hobbit are the ones where Burglarly is described in the way authors would usually describe Knighthood: in glowing terms, as an honorable profession with a deeply respectable history. Being good at Breaking the Law and Thieving is something worthy of accolades and praise (as long as you’re stealing for Honorable reasons). I love things like, the moment where the Elf-King wishes Bilbo a good day with the line:

“May your shadow never grow less (or stealing would be too easy).”

Tolkien understood that epic fantasy stories are the best when they’re actually heist stories in disguise!

Sincerely though, I think this is might be why The Hobbit captures my imagination more than similar “pastoral fantasy” style children’s books like Peter Rabbit?

Because children’s books are often super concerned with moralizing about the Evil of stealing and breaking the law and disobeying rules. “Peter should NOT steal from McGregor’s garden, and when he steals anyway bad things inevitably happen to him. because that’s what happens when you steal.. >:(”

But the Hobbit is like the opposite? It’s so blase and casual about how Stealing is Fine Actually. Yeah Thorin’s company needs to hire a burglar; sometimes you just need to steal some stuff from a dragon, and that’s life. Sometimes rich powerful jerks have all the money and you just need to take it from them, it’s fine, whatever, they stole it first.

Bilbo has some minor reservations about being a thief, but he gets quickly peer-pressured into becoming a professional burglar anyway after Gandalf lies on his resume. Then he spends the rest of the story prETENDING to be a master thief until he accidentally becomes one, something that is ultimately portrayed as generally pretty Cool and Good For HIs Self-Confidence actually.

“Stealing is fine and cool, just only do it from people who Have it Coming and be very careful you don’t get caught” — J R R Tolkien

This is something I feel people miss about the hobbit a lot. the Hobbit isn’t really about a fussy respectable sheltered gentleman who becomes a Noble Hero. It’s about a fussy respectable sheltered gentleman who becomes a Master Criminal(tm.)

“When there’s no cops around, everything’s legal!”— Bilbo Baggins

The vibe of something like Peter Rabbit is “don’t steal from McGregor’s garden! Stealing is always bad and breaking the rules will only hurt you >:(”

The vibe of the Hobbit is generally more like “You stole from McGregor’s garden? That’s TOTALLY RADICAL!!!! Amazing!!!!!! You’re so good at heists!!!!”

Happy Father’s Day also to Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield who are not ‘real dads’ but WERE the primary father figures of their respective nephews!!!
