Achievements of people born into excessive wealth mean nothing I’m sorry

it’s so interesting so many people keep repeating this same line of “it’s not like they could control where they were born”. and yet. absurdly rich folks do not take that into consideration when poor people need something they don’t immediately have. it’s always “well work for it! work for your food/water/shelter/health” there’s never any consideration to what life that poor person was born into even though they never had any control over it either. interesting how wealthy people feel comfortable playing that card.

100% unironically believe pete committed election fraud

Y’all have got to be joking. I’m not necessarily the hugest Buttigieg fan, but to accuse another democratic candidate for president of election fraud is dangerous, especially when the only “proof” you have is that his mother’s sister’s boyfriend’s auntie’s whatever whatever worked for an app company. Bernie ALSO hinted that he won the caucus “with no proof.” It’s just a strategy to show confidence and strength. Not an admission of guilt.

I also don’t really know what you’re trying to prove with your first pic. The way caucuses work is that a whole bunch of people go stand in a room in groups based on who they’re voting for. There are several rounds of shuffling around the room as candidates get eliminated for having too few votes. Buttigieg getting a lot of final round votes makes sense—as other more moderate candidates were eliminated, their voters moved across the room to the Buttigieg group. (These “movers” were the “final” votes.) It makes sense that Bernie would get fewer final-round voters too—all the people who were with him in the first round are die-hard fans, and the other left-most leaning candidates were not going to get eliminated and give him their votes. Buttigieg was going to pick up Biden, Klobuchar, Steyer, and Bloomberg voters. Bernie was likely to pick up mostly Warren voters, and she did well. That’s just caucuses. Not proof of election fraud.

I really understand the frustration of not knowing the results of this caucus. I know how frustrated Bernie voters must feel after 2016. But we have no evidence or indication that Pete Buttigieg is corrupt, and he’s not nearly as bad as Trump. We need to stop spinning lies about every person with an outside chance of becoming the democratic nominee, just because they’re not out favorite candidate. There are a lot of people in this country who are skeptical of Bernie. It’s not for us to decide that their decision to participate in elections indicates cheating on the part of another candidate.

Please let’s all calm down and wait for the results of the caucus, and let cooler heads prevail before we start accusing upstanding, dedicated public servants of felonies. Bernie might still win. And if some reporter actually proves Pete committed fruad, I’ll eat my words. But guys—he almost certainly did not.

omg shut up his own people tweeted out photos showing them wrongly rounding up numbers in his favor and theres a direct money trail between him and the app, thats called corruption baby!

if you still think american elections are above scrutiny and that democratic candidates don't commit fraud then you're an idiot and should just block me

Y’all really are out here dumb thinking that Democrats don’t commit election fraud

This is why e-voting and apps should never be a thing ever. And why else are we just now getting 62% of the results if Bernie ain't the winner?

I'm a strong, capable adult. If I wanted to touch fifty dicks in a single afternoon, I'd do it myself. I don't need your hand outs.

NYC Data Stories: Allyship

For when people say they’re sick of seeing gay stuff everywhere. Suck it up. 4 years. 4 years. And that’s just on the books, it’s legal. It doesn’t stop shitty attitudes, actions, or straight up violence.

4 years only covers being legally allowed to exist and marry

There are still 17 states that have no workplace protection for LGBT+ employees, and 10 state that only have protection if you’re a government employee. That means over half of the states in the U.S. still legally allow LGBT+ discrimination at almost every workplace

You can legally get married in those states and the next day you could legally be fired

Correct!

Even more, they utilized Cab Calloway (the band leader) and used the same rotoscoped piece of him dancing in almost 20 of their shorts!

Me halfway through this clip: “oh wait, are these the same guys who did the thing where they’d leapfrog over each other into the splits down some stairs?” *literally five seconds later they dance onto the stairs set* “Never mind.”

Happy Black History Month!

men will watch the most trash shit ever released but when it comes to a girl squad movie it needs to meet the highest bar to be considered watchable and worthy of their oh so valuable time lol i have to laugh

i was thinking abt that earlier bc my coworker said "so birds of prey doesn't look very good" and i said "i don't care if it's the most trash ass movie ever made, i'm excited and i'm GONNA watch it!" he said "what, just because they're women" and i said "uh. yeah."

especially in genres, women are held to a weirdly high standard. there are like eight fucking movies where tom cruise plays himself in ridiculous high-stakes spy settings and no one bitches that they're unrealistic or stupid or whatever but margot robbie does it once and suddenly it's all about the integrity of the art.

Men will fully see 11 Fast and Furious movies and 7 spinoffs to “support the boys” or whatever but the second a girl movie comes out theyre all film majors

Listen. I want to tell you guys about the Dollar Tree. If you ever need to rebuild your life fast, you want a dollar tree. Everything in a dollar tree costs one dollar. No exceptions. Nothing has a price tag. Everything is one dollar.

This is Dollar Tree not Dollar General.

Dollar Tree looks like this:

Their stuff is off-brand but decent quality.

Here are some things you can buy at the dollar tree for one dollar:

- any kind of makeup- foundation, eyeshadow, lipstick, lip gloss, mascara, etc

- socks

- Sports bras (sometimes)

- combs, brushes, hairclips, scrunchies, hair ties, headbands

- clothes hangers, laundry bags, mothballs

- any kind of office supplies or school supplies. Staplers, pencils, posterboard, pencils, pens, etc.

- party supplies including paper plates and balloons

- all kinds of toiletries- shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, washcloths, deodorant, razors, shaving cream, nailclippers, etc. Decent sizes, too.

- ceramic/glass plates, bowls, cups

- reading glasses, sunglasses

- plastic buckets

- cleaning supplies, detergent, bleach, laundry syrup, fabric softener, dish soap, sponges. brooms

- electronics, headphones, night lights, phone chargers, batteries, screen cleaners, phone cases

Basically? If you ever get kicked out of your house or find yourself with a couple bucks and nothing else, get thee to a dollar tree.

All the dollar tree stores I have been in have some sort of medical aisle too. Its actually where I went first when my tooth broke for some off brand orajel (Works much faster and better than orajel imo, longer too if you put it on a cotton ball and keep it in the area) And sometimes even emergency temp tooth repair kits, which are at least $7 elsewhere. Dollar tree is a miracle.

I love Dollar Tree. When I first moved out this place saved me.

Every 20-something individual needs a Dollar Tree nearby.

Dollar Tree also sells PREGNANCY TESTS and yes they work! Go in and buy like 5 of them, don’t spend $25 on three at CVS, not worth your money and honestly has saved me TONS of anxiety.

Dollar Tree also takes EBT. I nearly cried when I discovered that, because of my strict dietary needs.

Dollar Tree is good for greeting cards, as well. Don’t have a lot of money?

No problem!

They have a 50¢ section and a $1 section!

They literally have EVERY candy you’d get at a theater too, and way more.  Their snack row is to DIE FOR.

Also–college kids!  When my roommate stole all of my forks and bowls and then moved out unannounced in the middle of my freshman year, I went straight to Dollar Tree and got 2 packs of forks (each pack is 4 forks) for $1 each and some cute bowls that are still my favorite bowls in the house.  Not only is their silverware sturdy, but their plates and bowls are really cute.

A few dollar tree stores near me have even added a cold foods section! So check your local Dollar Tree for a $1 bag of frozen chicken nuggets and get yourself a meal!

So I just now learned about Stagecoach Mary and how have I never heard of this absolute LEGEND of a woman before

  • She was born a slave and freed when the Emancipation Proclamation was issued (she was about 30)
  • She was about six feet tall and 200 pounds and once she was free she decided she’d never take shit from anyone ever again
  • When one of her close friends, a nun by the name of Mother Amadeus, became ill with pneumonia at her convent in Montana, Mary headed alone into the frontier to nurse Mother Amadeus back to health
  • After Mother Amadeus recovered, she gave Mary a job as the foreman of the convent. She repaired buildings, took care of chickens, made the long and dangerous journeys into town for supplies, and did other odd jobs.
  • She could drink most men under the table, and one saloon offered five bucks and a free shot of whiskey to any man who could take a punch to the face from Mary and remain standing.
  • She was once said by a local paper to have broken more noses than anyone else in Montana
  • She was outspokenly Republican, which at this time was the liberal party in America, and would get into political debates with the more conservative townsfolk
  • One time a man insulted her outside the saloon so hit him in the face with a rock, and only stopped when other cowboys held her back.
  • On one supply run into town, her wagon overturned and the horses fled. Mary spent all night single-handedly fending off a pack of wolves with her guns before she righted the heavy wagon by herself and tracked down the spooked horses. The only thing lost in the accident was a jar of molasses.
  • She lost her job at the convent when she got into a gunfight with a male employee who did not want to take orders from a black woman. She reportedly shot him in the ass, which angered the local bishop.
  • After losing her convent job, Mary spent a brief time running a restaurant, where she welcomed and served all comers
  • When a job for a mail carrier opened at the local US Post Office, Mary got the job because she managed to hitch six horses to a wagon faster than any of the male candidates
  • She was sixty at the time
  • This made her the first black woman mail carrier, and the second woman mail carrier in US history
  • When the snows were too deep for the horses to manage the long and dangerous delivery routes, Mary would strap on snowshoes, put the bags of mail on her shoulders, and do it herself
  • At one point she apparently had a pet eagle????
  • She only retired from the mail route when she was about 70 years old, and instead made a quieter living by babysitting and running a laundry business in the town of Cascade
  • She was a huge baseball fan and often gave the local team a big bouquet of flowers from her garden
  • The people of Cascade loved Mary so much that they closed the schools annually on her birthday
  • When a law was passed in Montana that forbade women from drinking in saloons, the mayor of Cascade granted Mary an exemption.
  • When her house burned down, the whole town got together to help her build a new one
  • She continued drinking, fighting, and going to baseball games until she died of liver failure at 82 in 1914

Mary (far right) and the local baseball team

Anyway sorry for gushing I just now heard about her and I’m in love

I’ve heard of her, but godDAMN, if her story doesn’t bear repeating. ^w^

Remember this woman. She is the woman that gave us a way to fight for inclusion in feminist spaces so that we are not forgotten.

One correction. While she did create the TERM “intersectionality,” Black women theorists had been doing the work of intersectionality long before 1989. Anna Julia Cooper’s A Voice From the South (1892) is a good place to start. But there are even earlier examples in speeches, novels, and poetry.

what is the “work of intersectionality”? because i still see “Intersectional” misused as a placeholder for “inclusive” on this site and beyond and it’s so damn frustrating.

I’ll throw that over to @danielle-mertina to answer since that’s her specialty.

Crenshaw created the term intersectionality to specifically refer to the ways that Black women are targeted due to race + gender (and other forms of oppression too such as sexuality and class).

When I say that 19th century Black women did the work of intersectionality, I mean that their work was inherently concerned with not only their blackness but also their womanhood and how that made their political reality very different from Black men or white women. Some examples of writers who did this would be Harriet Jacobs, Sojourner Truth, Frances E.W. Harper, Mary Prince, Ida B. Wells and of course Anna Julia Cooper who wrote an entire book on the state of Black women at the turn of the century.

Making terms is important but it’s not the genesis of modes of thinking…so this troubles me concerning how Tumblr people discuss Crenshaw. Like she invented in 1989 Black women thinking “huh, it’s not just my race that matters – it’s gender too!” Because that’s not what happened.

Even the Combahee River Collective statement predates Crenshaw creating the term “intersectionality” and that’s widely viewed as the manifesto of Black feminism.

Can you teach a class on black feminist theory and history and then let me attend?

Except that’s not really what the focus on intersectionality was in Crenshaw’s article… she didn’t theorize “it’s not just my race that matters, it’s gender too”. Her article and research was focused on activism. It’s about how feminist and anti-racist strategies that do help part of their population of interest (e.g. white women) **not only ignore but can actively harm** another part of the population.

Intersectionality is about re-thinking social movement strategies and methods so that they don’t harm the more marginalized portion of the oppressed group they are working for, which are often the people at intersecting positions. Its Not about oppression very generally being caused by multiple systems. It’s not about “Black women figuring out that they’re harmed by multiple things” at all.

Also ‘intersectionality’ describes the social position of people (in the initial article, woc) who are harmed by activist movement that claims to work for them. So I’m with @saturnineaqua the term “doing the work of intersectionality” really does conflate intersectionality and inclusion imo

As a side, intersectionality does not specifically relate to how women of color are harmed by activist movements tho that is an important way in which intersectionality functions. In her own words, Crenshaw describes intersectionality as “just a metaphor for understanding the ways that multiple forms of inequality compound themselves and create obstacles that are often not understood within conventional ways of thinking.” Which she then extrapolates to feminism but it’s a term that can be used outside of just activism.

But that aside, I’m not sure you’re understanding what @danielle-mertina is trying to say. I think overall what she’s trying to say is that Crenshaw is not the first person to introduce the theory that intersections of race and gender are overlooked leading to further disenfranchisement. No one here has making a reduction of Crenshaw’s work by said it’s “just about race and gender.” What Danielle is saying is that there were already black Woman who talking about this and who were actively doing the work to address and promote intersectionality within pretty much every facet of life, including feminism. What she’s saying is that Kimberly Crenshaw did not invent the idea that race and gender compound to create needs that are not addressed by current feminist and other political movements. She gave it a name. And she popularized the term and her work is important, but she did invent intersectionality.

Yeah there’s two different discussions. The idea that intersectionality is about the interaction of multiple forms of oppression is pretty straightforward and most people accept and understand that.

My larger point (that’s more of a point of contention) was that while Crenshaw named this realization, she did not create the underlying theory behind it. Black women centuries before her did.
