Since July is Disability Pride Month
(as opposed to every other month when we're all demure about disability rights /gentle sarcasm)
I wanted to highlight one of my favorite artists: Liberal Jane.
They are not as high-profile as the WGA, but I would like to bring everyone's attention to the imminent strike action by thousands of hotel workers in Los Angeles. They are set to go on strike tomorrow, July 1st, 2023.
More than 15,000 hotel workers are seeking higher pay, better benefits, and working conditions. This includes an across-the-board $5 an hour raise, as well as affordable healthcare and better pensions. They also are seeking a ban on the use of E-Verify, which is used to deny employment to undocumented workers and workers involved with the criminal justice system. Thinking about how incredibly brave it was of Suzanne to make the main love interest a kind, sensitive, emotionally intelligent, disabled, stocky blond in 2008 when the trend at the time was skinny, tall, lanky, sarcastic, hates-everyone-but-main character, rageboy. And how absolutely genius it was to have BOTH of those types in the same series and have Katniss choose Peeta. Groundbreaking.
You can’t leave all this in the notes!! Because yes while Katniss spawned an endless stream of “not like other girls” main characters she is like other girls!!! She likes fashion. She doesn’t understand it, but she likes it. She loves the clothes Cinna makes her. But she’s also very practical. She is a fighter. She’s at turns sarcastic and sincere, so heartbreakingly sincere. And Peeta just takes it in stride and is all the more enamored by her for it. He sees her whole personhood and loves it, and is never once threatened by her. She’s a whole complex person.
catching fire is full of so many randomly funny moments despite being incredibly horrific overall (just like the rest of the hunger games trilogy tbh) but nothing in any of the books has made me laugh out loud like finnick waking up when katniss and peeta were like this close to having sex while everyone else was asleep and being like "well i'm awake now. katniss you can rest and i'll finish your watch out with peeta" and then looking at them for a second and realizing what he just interrupted and being like "oh uhhh well actually you know what i can keep watch by myself and you guys can do whatever"
