@beccaann9-blog

'Cause why not?

the most life-changing customer i’ve ever had at work was a guy who came up to me and my coworker when we were at cash and said ‘hey kids…. wanna see something?’

and I said sure because why the fuck not, i’m here for a good time not a long time, and this motherfucker pulled a railroad spike out of his pocket.

A GODDAMN

ANTIQUE

RAILROAD

SPIKE

It was a fucking foot long chunk of steel that weighed about five pounds on its own so i was like ‘huh….. neat’

and he said ‘wait. there’s more’ and he took out a screwdriver. inlaid into the head of the spike. ‘things aren’t always as they appear’ he said as he unscrewed the bit and pulled out of this goddamn railroad spike

a statue

a tiny, tiny golden statue stood on the base of this flathead screw. it was a tiny golden man standing next to a tiny golden flower with gemstones in the petals. the whole thing was smaller than my thumbnail is tall. it was detailed enough that the tiny man had facial features. it was amazing.

‘oh my god,’ i said. ‘how long did it take you to make that?’

‘here’s a word of advice,’ he said, ‘never answer that question when people ask it. it devalues your work. you’ll get faster and better at things, and be able to make more art in less time. they don’t need to know about the process, just the product’.

and he left and that’s the one artistic piece of advice i definitely wanna hold to.

don’t tell people how long it takes to make shit.

Do you think the Old Gods/Archdemons are the keys to the Evanuris' prison? And that the grey wardens killing them would have unleashed them?

Avatar

I think it has to be something like that, or he wouldn’t get so worked up. But I don’t think the Archdemons are imprisoning the Evanuris in particular, cause the Evanuris’ prison is the Veil itself, and Solas wants to take down the Veil - he seems to agree that tearing down the Veil would free the Evanuris, but says he ‘has plans’ for dealing with that. Whereas he gets very upset at the idea of killing the Old Gods and freeing whatever they’re holding back.

Solas had been fighting the Evanuris for a while before he finally put up the Veil, so there was a tipping point, and it wasn’t just Mythal’s murder. So what else could killing the Old Gods possibly unleash? I’m reminded again of the scene description I found in the game files of a particular hard-to-find ruin in Trespasser:

Other details too:

Hail Mythal, adjudicator and savior! She has struck down the pillars of the earth and rendered their demesne unto the People! Praise her name forever!“

For a moment, the scent of blood fills the air, and there is a vivid image of green vines growing and enveloping a sphere of fire.

The vision grows dark. An aeon seems to pass. Then the runes crackle, as if filled with an angry energy. A new vision appears: elves collapsing caverns, sealing the Deep Roads with stone and magic.

Terror, heart-pounding, ice-cold, as the last of the spells is cast.

A voice whispers: “What the Evanuris in their greed could unleash would end us all. Let this place be forgotten. Let no one wake its anger. The People must rise before their false gods destroy them all.“’ (x)

  • “The runes say the Evanuris fought the Titans. They mined their bodies for lyrium and… something else. It’s not clear.”
  • ”-each time she entered the Void, Andruil suffered longer and longer periods of madness after returning. Andruil put on armor made of the Void, and all forgot her true face. She made weapons of darkness, and plague ate her lands. She howled things meant to be forgotten, and the other gods became fearful Andruil would hunt them in turn.“ (x)
  • “The fools who first unleashed the Blight upon this world thought they were unlocking ultimate power.”
  • “He broke the dreams to stop the old dreams from waking. The wolf chews its leg off to escape the trap.”
  • “They made bodies from the earth. And the earth was afraid. It fought back. But they made it forget.”

It’s not the Evanuris themselves, it’s what the Evanuris were doing. Something so bad that Elvhenan had to be destroyed (and the world cut off from the Fade) to stop the Evanuris from unleashing it. Something that Solas never even hints at in passing lest it be discovered. “Every alternative was worse.”

We’ve seen two different illustrations of what exactly the Seven Seals (presumably the archdemons) are holding back. I think both the many-eyed thing and the lyrium idol are representing the same thing. At this point, I’m taking the red lyrium idol to be a symbol and not what is actually locked away.

So what could it be? What are the ‘old dreams?’ What is sleeping that would be angry if they woke up? It could honestly be anything - the impossibly large sleeping Titans waking up/becoming blighted and striding the land, destroying everything with earthquakes, a Blight beyond reckoning that is only barely being held back, the Forbidden/Forgotten ones, or, yeah, I guess it could be the Evanuris themselves, Blighted beyond recognition. Or it could be something else we haven’t seen - they’re still introducing new concepts.

But whatever it is, Solas is worried af about it, but he hasn’t talked openly about it.

PSA: Stuff You Maybe Didn’t Realize You Can Back Up To AO3, And How To Tag it

Tumblr seems to be in potential death throes or at least, incredibly volatile and unreliable lately, but we’ve done some pretty good and informative work on canon analysis and reference guides so I was looking for ways to back it up without losing it…and the solution became obvious to me: Archive of Our Own, aka AO3.  “What?” you might ask if you are less familiar with their TOS. “Isn’t that just a fanfic archive??” No! It’s a fanWORK archive. It is an archive for fanworks in general! “Fanwork” is a broad term that encompasses a lot of things, but it doesn’t just include fanfic and fanart, vids etc; it also includes “fannish” essays and articles that fall under what’s often called “meta” (from the word for “beyond” or “above”, referencing that it goes beyond the original exact text)! The defining factor of whether Archive of Our Own is the appropriate place to post it is not whether or not it’s a fictional expansion of canon (fanfic), though that is definitely included - no, it’s literally just “is this a work by a ‘fan’ intended for other ‘fannish’ folks/of ‘fannish’ interest?”  The articles we’ve written as a handy reference to the period-appropriate Japanese clothing worn by Inuyasha characters?  The analyses of characters? The delineations of concrete canon (the original work) vs common “fanon” (common misconceptions within the fandom)? Even the discussion of broader cultural, historical, and geographic context that applies to the series and many potential fanworks?  All of those are fannish nonfiction! Which means they absolutely can (and will) have a home on AO3, and I encourage anybody who is wanting to back up similar works of “fannish interest” - ranging from research they’ve done for a fic, to character analyses and headcanons - to use AO3 for it, because it’s a stable, smooth-running platform that is ad-free and unlike tumblr, is run by a nonprofit (The OTW) that itself is run by and for the benefit of, fellow fans.  Of course, that begs the question of how to tag your work if you do cross-post it, eh? So on that note, here’s a quick run-down of tags we’re finding useful and applicable, which I’ve figured out through a combination of trial and error and actually asking a tag wrangler (shoutout to @wrangletangle for their invaluable help!): First, the Very Broad: - “ Nonfiction ”. This helps separate it from fanfic on the archive, so people who aren’t looking for anything but fanfic are less likely to have to skim past it, whereas people looking for exactly that content are more likely to find it. - while “Meta” and “Essay” and even “Information” are all sometimes used for the kinds of nonfiction and analytical works we post, I’ve been told “ Meta Essay ” is the advisable specific tag for such works. This would apply to character analyses, reference guides to canon, and even reference guides to real-world things that are reflected in the canon (such as our articles on Japanese clothing as worn by the characters).  The other three tags are usable, and I’ve been using them as well to cover my bases, but they’ll also tend to bring up content such as “essay format” fanfic or fanfic with titles with those words in them - something that does not happen with “Meta Essay”.

- I’ve also found by poking around in suggested tags, that “ Fanwork Research & Reference Guides ” is consistently used (even by casual users) for: nonfiction fannish works relating to analyses of canon materials; analyses of and meta on fandom-specific or fanwork-specific tropes; information on or guides to writing real-world stuff that applies to or is reflected in specific fandoms’ media (e.g. articles on period-appropriate culture-specific costuming and how to describe it); and expanded background materials for specific fans’ fanworks (such as how a given AU’s worldbuilding is supposed to be set up) that didn’t fit within the narrative proper and is separated out as a reference for interested readers. Basically, if it’s an original fan-made reference for something specific to one or more fanworks, or a research aid for writing certain things applicable to fanworks or fannish interests in general, then it can fall under that latter tag.

- You should also mark it with any appropriate fandom(s) in the “Fandom” field. Just like you would for a fanfic, because of course, the work is specifically relevant to fans of X canon, right? If it discusses sensitive topics, or particular characters, etc., you should probably tag for those. E.g. “death” or “mental illness”, “Kagome Higurashi”, etc.

Additionally, if you are backing it up from a Tumblr you may wish to add: - “ Archived From Tumblr “ and/or “ Cross-Posted From Tumblr ” to reference the original place of publication, for works originally posted to tumblr. (I advise this if only because someday, there might not be “tumblr” as we know it, and someone might be specifically looking for content that was originally on it, you never know) - “ Archived From [blog name] Blog ”; this marks it as an archived work from a specific blog. And yes, I recommend adding the word “blog” in there for clarity- Wrangletangle was actually delighted that I bothered to tag our first archived work with “Archived From Inu-Fiction Blog” because being EXTREMLY specific about things like that is super helpful to the tag wranglers on AO3, who have to decide how to categorize/”syn” (synonym) various new tags from alphabetized lists without context of the original posting right in front of them.  In other words, including the name AND the word “blog” in it, helps them categorize the tag on the back end without having to spend extra time googling what the heck “[Insert Name Here]” was originally

Overall, you should be as specific and clear as possible, but those tags/tag formats should prove useful in tagging it correctly should you choose to put fannish essays and articles up on AO3 :) Oh, and protip sidebar for those posting, especially works that are more than plain text: you can make archiving things quicker and easier for yourself, but remember to plan ahead for tumblr’s potential demise/disabling/service interruptions. The good news: You can literally copy and paste the ENTIRE text of a tumblr post from say, an “edit” window, on tumblr, straight into AO3′s Rich Text Format editor, and it will preserve pretty much all or almost all of the formatting - such as bold, italics, embedded links, etc! But the bad news: keep in mind that while AO3 allows for embedded images and it WILL transfer those embedded images with a quick copy-paste like that, AO3 itself doesn’t host the images for embedding; those are still external images. This means that whether or not they continue to load/display for users, depends entirely on whether the file is still on the original external server! As I quickly discovered, in the case of posts copied from the Edit window of a tumblr post, the images will still point to the copies of the images ON tumblr’s servers. What this means is that you should back up (save copies elsewhere of) any embedded images that you consider vital to such posts, in case you need to upload them elsewhere and fiddle with where the external image is being pulled from, later.  Personally, I’m doing that AND adding image descriptions underneath them, just to be on the safe side (and in fairness, this makes it more accessible to people who cannot view the images anyway, such as sight-impaired people who use screen readers or people who have images set to not automatically display on their browser, so it’s win-win)

I saw that you are the "Patron Saint of Shitposts" and I thought you might be pleased to know that there's a catholic holy day called Gaudete Sunday, where the priests wear pink robes.

A better, more positive Tumblr

Since its founding in 2007, Tumblr has always been a place for wide open, creative self-expression at the heart of community and culture. To borrow from our founder David Karp, we’re proud to have inspired a generation of artists, writers, creators, curators, and crusaders to redefine our culture and to help empower individuality.

Over the past several months, and inspired by our storied past, we’ve given serious thought to who we want to be to our community moving forward and have been hard at work laying the foundation for a better Tumblr. We’ve realized that in order to continue to fulfill our promise and place in culture, especially as it evolves, we must change. Some of that change began with fostering more constructive dialogue among our community members. Today, we’re taking another step by no longer allowing adult content, including explicit sexual content and nudity (with some exceptions).

Let’s first be unequivocal about something that should not be confused with today’s policy change: posting anything that is harmful to minors, including child pornography, is abhorrent and has no place in our community. We’ve always had and always will have a zero tolerance policy for this type of content. To this end, we continuously invest in the enforcement of this policy, including industry-standard machine monitoring, a growing team of human moderators, and user tools that make it easy to report abuse. We also closely partner with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Internet Watch Foundation, two invaluable organizations at the forefront of protecting our children from abuse, and through these partnerships we report violations of this policy to law enforcement authorities. We can never prevent all bad actors from attempting to abuse our platform, but we make it our highest priority to keep the community as safe as possible.

So what is changing?

Posts that contain adult content will no longer be allowed on Tumblr, and we’ve updated our Community Guidelines to reflect this policy change. We recognize Tumblr is also a place to speak freely about topics like art, sex positivity, your relationships, your sexuality, and your personal journey. We want to make sure that we continue to foster this type of diversity of expression in the community, so our new policy strives to strike a balance.

Why are we doing this?

It is our continued, humble aspiration that Tumblr be a safe place for creative expression, self-discovery, and a deep sense of community. As Tumblr continues to grow and evolve, and our understanding of our impact on our world becomes clearer, we have a responsibility to consider that impact across different age groups, demographics, cultures, and mindsets. We spent considerable time weighing the pros and cons of expression in the community that includes adult content. In doing so, it became clear that without this content we have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves.

Bottom line: There are no shortage of sites on the internet that feature adult content. We will leave it to them and focus our efforts on creating the most welcoming environment possible for our community.

So what’s next?

Starting December 17, 2018, we will begin enforcing this new policy. Community members with content that is no longer permitted on Tumblr will get a heads up from us in advance and steps they can take to appeal or preserve their content outside the community if they so choose. All changes won’t happen overnight as something of this complexity takes time.

Another thing, filtering this type of content versus say, a political protest with nudity or the statue of David, is not simple at scale. We’re relying on automated tools to identify adult content and humans to help train and keep our systems in check. We know there will be mistakes, but we’ve done our best to create and enforce a policy that acknowledges the breadth of expression we see in the community.

Most importantly, we’re going to be as transparent as possible with you about the decisions we’re making and resources available to you, including more detailed information, product enhancements, and more content moderators to interface directly with the community and content.

Like you, we love Tumblr and what it’s come to mean for millions of people around the world. Our actions are out of love and hope for our community. We won’t always get this right, especially in the beginning, but we are determined to make your experience a positive one.

Jeff D’Onofrio CEO

So you’re literally banning NSFW content, including amazing art with nsfw tags, even though tumblr is one of main sources of recognition for many artists. Why? Because you don’t keep up with porn bots and illegal content such as child pornography. Great. Keep it up, tell us more about how much you care about us and how you want to protect our minds from the big bad world we live in. Minors are allowed on this site, but there were multiple filters for nsfw, and it was enough. It’s the ones that watch over minors and minors themselves that should be responsible for consequences of going around those filters. People say that it’s a political thing, but I think that it’s not. You are pushing an agenda, but not a political one. Much worse. You’re telling all of your users that internet should be for kids, that there should be nothing outside of your family-friendly bubble in it, and that we are bad people if we don’t follow that agenda, that ideology. You fought for net neutrality but only for your own profit, as it seems. Because you’ve become a part of a movement restricting internet. Our internet, the one that should be free. You’re silencing us. And I will not take it without saying anything. Such actions disgust me. Darius out.

Mermaids with hair over their eyes are usually from deeper waters. The sea floor has almost no light, so deep sea mermaids (few of which have functional eyes) visiting the surface would be blinded by the sun.

To mermaids, covering their eyes with hair is similar to sunglasses.

Deep sea mermaids are also shy, accustomed to dark waters for hiding their monstrous appearances. Freshwater Mermaid: Howdy y'all, I’d like you to meet my cousin. She’s a little shy :) 30ft Tall Deep Sea Mermaid with hair so long it turns the water black: ᴴᵉʷʷᵒ

so, post-canon…

  • Capheus wins the election, of course he does. He wins re-election, too…but probably not the one after that. It’s difficult, you see, to be the face of anti-corruption when your father-in-law is a drug lord.
  • He stays in politics, though. Zakia needs someone to drive her tour bus.
  • Wolfgang and Felix go with the India Plan, and the story is that, after the scare of Kala being shot, she and Rajan hired this scary-looking Germans as bodyguards. After a year or so, Kala’s parents suspect something but would rather not think about it and Rajan’s father is oblivious.
  • They’re all pretty good at keeping up the act - Felix is surprisingly fantastic at covering for the three of them - but now and then, someone will approach Rajan and suggest, sometimes genuinely sympathetically, that his wife might, just maybe, be…
  • Rajan is amazing at looking shocked and offended that you would even imply this about his beautiful wife. Of course she is perfectly honest, and their marriage has never been steadier! How dare you!
  • They have two daughters. The second is conspicuously light-skinned. People have almost given up commenting.
  • Lito has like two weeks in the middle of filming where he’s half-convinced that Hernando is going to leave him for Blake Huntington, because Blake can talk about Kant and metaphor and all those things that make Lito love Hernando so much but he Does Not understand. Hernando, of course, is stifling completely irrational spikes of rage every time he watches Lito kiss Blake, because…it never bothered him when it was women, you know, because he knew Lito wasn’t really interested. That it could never be real. But not only is Blake Huntington, well, Blake fucking Huntington, 3-time Academy Award winner, hot as a steaming griddle, and clever and educated to boot, but he’s male and Lito is out, and playing this role that is 50% his own story anyway, and here’s Blake being the love of his life… Meanwhile, Lito is off crying on a pillow somewhere because Hernando and Blake were talking about Proust…
  • Dani sorts this out by
  • a) shutting them in the bedroom until they talk to each other, and
  • b) sleeping with Blake Huntington and claiming dibs by right of First Bang.
  • she also, incidentally, prints cards for herself as an agent, and gets a lot of calls
  • The whole cluster, plus friends and family, flies to LA for the opening night of Iberian Dreams. Lito spends half of it full-on sobbing, at his own acting and more importantly because his dream is coming true.
  • The only one crying harder is Bug.
  • Nomi and Amanita stay in San Francisco, for the most part. They take a lot of romantic vacations to visit their family around the world, and take turns bringing each other coffee and pastries while they co-write a fictionalized, urban fantasy version of their story. Because even if the details need to stay secret, there are some things you need to say loud and proud.
  • Sun and Mun probably get married eventually, but they never have biological human children. They have a lot of dogs, and eventually Mun gets shot one too many times and she convinces him to quit the force and go work in a dojo. He loves it. Sun, meanwhile, is back at Bak, rebuilding her family name and doing finance by day and fistfights by night. The other fighters know her now, though. As do the kids Mun trains. It’s a really great extended family.
  • Will does not move to Iceland so much as move to Riley, and Riley’s home is Iceland but she cannot stay there, not always. Fortunately, there are clubs all over Europe that will open the doors and vive la resistance for Riley Blue.
  • In only a few years, she is pregnant again - though not with a child this time. With eight.
  • They go home for this. She has nightmares, of the car and the frozen hill and the empty church in equal parts.
  • It is nothing like that. They are on the beach, because it felt right, righter than her living room. Will holds her hands, as do Nomi, Lito, Sun, Capheus, Kala, Wolfgang. The sun is setting, but it is summer in Iceland; it is warm. Around the world, eight other people open their eyes and see the sunset as well, and their mother exhausted but smiling.
  • They will never be hunted.

I think the best piece of character design advice I ever received was actually from a band leadership camp I attended in june of 2017.

the speaker there gave lots of advice for leaders—obviously, it was a leadership camp—but his saying about personality flaws struck me as useful for writers too.

he said to us all “your curses are your blessings and your blessings are your curses” and went on to explain how because he was such a great speaker, it made him a terrible listener. he could give speeches for hours on end and inspire thousands of people, but as soon as someone wanted to talk to him one on one or vent to him, he struggled with it.

he had us write down our greatest weakness and relate it to our biggest strength (mine being that I am far too emotional, but I’m gentle with others because I can understand their emotions), and the whole time people are sharing theirs, my mind was running wild with all my characters and their flaws.

previously, I had added flaws as an after thought, as in “this character seems too perfect. how can I make them not-like-that?” but that’s not how people or personalities work. for every human alive, their flaws and their strengths are directly related to each other. you can’t have one without the other.

is your character strong-willed? that can easily turn into stubbornness. is your character compassionate? maybe they give too many chances. are they loyal? then they’ll destroy the world for the people they love.

it works the other way around too: maybe your villain only hates the protagonist’s people because they love their own and just have a twisted sense of how to protect them. maybe your antagonist is arrogant, but they’ll be confident in everything they do.

tl;dr “your curses are your blessings, and your blessings are your curses” there is no such thing as a character flaw, just a strength that has been stretched too far.

I feel like an important message is trying to be communicated to me but I have no idea what it is

Our forests are being cut down 3x faster than they can grow! One acre of hemp produces as much cellulose fiber pulp as 4.1 acres of trees!!! This is super useful for so many things, especially paper production! In addition, hemp takes in carbon dioxide 4x as fast as trees do, which makes it especially valuable in the act of reducing CO2 emissions/greenhouse gases! 🌲🌲🌲 source

Important reminder that industrial hemp can’t be used as a recreational drug, so if anyone tries to pull that card you can just stop them then and there. There are no real arguments against using industrial hemp, even if you’re rigidly against the legalization of any recreational drugs.

I’m glad this article highlights that if this man made it to shore and had extended contact with these people, he would have exposed them to diseases they’ve never seen before and potentially killed them all. There’s a reason it’s illegal to go there, and Jesus isn’t gonna protect them from chicken pox or the flu.

He was told not to go near these people and he refused to listen. Let this be a lesson to those who think they can go places and do whatever they want with no repercussions.

Exactly. Like, we are supposed to feel bad for someone who was already warned to not to go there? In what world? I feel for his family and all but this could have been prevented by his own hands.

I feel for the family as well. There is a reason why there are so many tribes who have been omitted from history books and live off the grid. People just refuse to leave them alone.

For real. They did what they had to do. And he should have realized that when he was warned before. In fact just remembered a Tomb Raider quote. “ Not everything lost is meant to be found”.

concept: gaud comic anthology. would contain original short comics created by select artists, featuring the adventures of your favorite chaotic wad of silly putty. pdf would be on gumroad for a few bucks.

gimme your thoughts, gotta gauge the interest

there are different ways we could do this. we could do a traditional open submissions call, and publish from that pool. but where’s the fun in that. plus, gaud lore is collaborative, it’s a group narrative everyone gets to contribute to. in that vein, let’s build stories together

what i’m considering doing is:

  • putting together a shortlist of interested artists and writers
  • brainstorming with them, figuring out the basics of their story
  • pairing artists & writers together to develop it into comic form,
  • with me standing by as your friendly, encouraging pink eldritch editor
  • just hovering behind you as you’re slouched at your desk…

floating gently as a pink haze forever in your periphery

artists, grab a writer friend. writers, go kidnap some artists. we doing this

do you have an idea for a comic but not quite the art skills? that’s fine! sketch out a quick-n-dirty draft, enough to get the story and details across, and send it in. if it makes me laugh (and you gremlins always make me laugh), i’ll pair you up with an artist to redraw it

that was easy

for story inspo, check my #gaudy fanfic and #writing prompt tags. there are also a few fics on Ao3
