Be Candid Beautifully

@becandidbeautifully / becandidbeautifully.tumblr.com

she/her. feminist. all around science geek. unable to resist reblogging cat posts.

Modern fandom went awry when people stopped learning how to avoid content that upsets them and instead starting actively seeking it out.

I mean this in the kindest, most loving way possible, but babes you'll be so much happy when you stop focusing on what other people are doing and instead focus on what you like.

You'll never be able to stop people from liking what you hate, and the best way you'll find any peace of mind is properly utilizing blocking, blacklisting, and muting tools. Take it from someone who used to run a shipping discourse blog, fandom is supposed to be what you enjoy, stop focusing on things that upset you.

“The average US president has been charged with 1.54 felonies” factoid isn’t true. The average US President has been charged with 0 felonies. Donald trump, who has been charged with 71, is a statistical outlier and should not have been counted

This was only 55 years ago. You can understand a lot of what’s wrong with the US if you realize that the average age of our elected senators is about 63. “Good old days” is a dogwhistle.

Our current Supreme Court might’ve ruled against the Lovings.

Tumblr Migration 2: Reddit Boogaloo

We all know about the Twitter immigrants, but there seems to be radio silence on what's happening now with Reddit users from certain subreddits doing a similar thing.

What's happening?

Reddit is restricting their API later this month and killing off third-party apps. An AMA (Ask Me Anything) with the CEO Steve Hoffman was held and it was clear that he would continue with the changes.

In protest, thousands of subreddits across the site are planning to go dark for 48 hours on June 12th. Some are planning to continue indefinitely until the changes are reversed.

Okay, so how does this affect Tumblr?

Some subreddits (mainly queer and left-leaning meme ones, don't worry too much about Reddit Atheists™ overrunning us) are encouraging their users to jump ship to our beloved - and beloathed - hellsite. There will be another influx of new users and many will be unfamiliar with how the site works.

What do us Tumblr users do?

Show them how to use the site; introduce them to the site's culture, tell them to reblog shit and curate their dashboard. Sorta like how we welcomed Twitter users back when they flocked here. Kungpowpenising optional.

I'm new from Reddit, what do I do here?

CHANGE YOUR PROFILE PICTURE AND BANNER TO SOMETHING OTHER THAN DEFAULT BECAUSE THIS SITE IS FILLED WITH BOTS AND YOU MIGHT BE MISTAKEN FOR ONE. This is the FIRST thing you should do after getting a blog.

Other folks can help you with stuff like curating your dashboard or creating sideblogs (or you can look shit up) but please, PLEASE just give yourself an icon and reblog some stuff so people don't mistake you for a bot

This is one of the first posts I've seen after trying to look at Tumblr again, so I've decided to head their advice and reblog this. I don't even know what a reblog is but I'll find out in time. It's a learning process

a reblog is what you just did! it's similar to a retweet on twitter and it's the main way things spread on tumblr

to anyone in the areas impacted by the wildfire smoke, my #1 biggest piece of advice as someone whos been dealing with wildfire smoke in the NW united states for years, is build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal Cube

they perform as well as expensive HEPA air cleaners, and are comparatively VERY inexpensive. all you need is a box fan, 4 air filters, a piece of cardboard, and some duct tape!!!!

i think it took us maybe a half hour to put ours together, if that, and we replace the filters every 3 months. it's really made a HUGE difference, both when the air quality is bad, but also with our allergies

Saw these easy to read instructions on Twitter. Stay safe 💚

Hate that me pointing out that spiderverse isn't safe is being misconstrued into people thinking I hate it.

I loved the first movie, my head got fuzzy at points but I could still watch it. I mourned for my friends who couldn't because the animation was beautiful and the story touching. I worried for those who had to avoid the internet due to bad tagging.

I need sunglasses and the room to be bright as hell to watch just the trailers of the second film. I can't fully appreciate the art because more than anything I'm mourning the people who would love to see it but can't. I'm scared for the bad tagging again.

Bright glitchy colors give me debilitating migraines. For some it's deadly seizures.

We have every right to be upset that one of the most popular films right now is inaccessible to us to certain degrees. We have every right to be upset that there was NO WARNING on these triggers.

Accessibility is important: in food, housing, jobs, and art. You can make art that triggers migraines and seizures but God damn it, it's not that hard to warn people about it.

If your enjoyment of a film is ruined by a warning then you're a fucking loser. People's lives are more important than your movie, sorry but it's true.
