any more manga recs? finished your big list of highlights and I can't find shit that hits the same as Kurosawa or The Climber

(This is the list of highlights in question, for anyone who hasn’t seen it)

I wish I had some more I could give— I haven’t been able to scrounge up too much free time lately, and I’ve been filling it with a mixture of other things, like movies and short stories.

I’m currently enjoying Summit of The Gods by Jiro Taniguchi— I haven’t finished it yet, but it deals with a lot of similar themes as the climber, and based on his Wikipedia page, Taniguchi might be another good manga artist to look into for more tonally serious manga.

If you want to delve outside of the manga world, Allison Bechdel’s stuff is great, and of course Kate Beaton’s new book is a must read. I have also been enjoying Gina Wynbrandt’s stuff lately, and of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t recommend Octopus Pie at every opportunity.

If anyone else knows of manga similar to The Climber or Saikyo Densetsu Kurosawa, believe me, I would like to know just as badly.

Is there a place where I can read all the GUE comics collectively (besides tumblr tags)? Have you ever thought of making a GUE website or a webtoon account or something along those lines?

Not at the moment, unfortunately. I am hard at work on GUE 4, however, and plan on compiling all the other GUE stuff in one place before that comes out, so that people have and easy place to read it. In the meantime, the least cluttered place to find it is probably on the my Instagram, or by going on twitter and typing [ from: beanytuesday gue ] (minus the brackets) in the search bar. Which I know is not ideal, lol. Sorry!

those ocean floor girls look familiar! werent they in a relatively early comic of yours? i love them!

This was their first appearance! And they popped up in a couple patreon thank-you comics since then. Just a fun character design project for 'Mermay' a few years back.

Anonymous asked:

did you derive your nom de plume from boston's favorite son?

Close! It’s from the predecessor podcast, Podtoid. I stopped listening, so they may have re-used the name since then, but when I originally lifted it it was merely a one-off from one of the show’s iconic Willem Dafoe film pitches. I used it as a steam name in college, then absentmindedly made it my Twitter name, never anticipating breaking like 500 followers. Woopsie

Anyway, that’s the name origin for you

A Few Thoughts On AI Art, Which May Already Be Obvious To Some

I wrote a little more about this on my patreon if people have any interest in further reading

does UCS from GUE stand for United Confederation of States? if so funny coincidence because i used that name for an alternate us in one of my now defunct projects (love ur comics btw ESP GUE)

Hahaha it DID when I originally introduced it in GUE 2, but in GUE 3 I retconned it to be "Unified Central States" which I thinks works as a clearer analogue for an alternate universe United States of America-- particularly when the regions to the north and south are, by contrast, lawless unexplored territories. So "United Confederation of States" is yours to keep.

i first saw GUE on a mutual's blog and almost scrolled past it because tiny phone/small text combo, but my god am i glad i didn't.

(David Lynch voice) if you’re reading it on a telephone, you will never in a trillion years experience the comic

Another comic about people acting normal on Twitter

I can’t respond to all of them individually, but to everyone sending me kind messages about how much they’re enjoying GUE; I am sincerely, sincerely grateful. There’s always a lot of pressure when you change so drastically from the kind of work you’ve become known for, and I’m glad people are enjoying it so far. I am working on the fourth chapter as we speak, which I feel will be far and away the strongest one. Your kind words keep me confident and motivated in a time when I would otherwise feel like I’ve artistically stagnated. Thank you for all the support.
