Way I see it, its not much of a loss.  The bean counters are in charge now. To save money they've quit hiring real writers.  This last season, with one or two exceptions, has been pure crap.  The individual responsible for "Genesis" is writing the next movie.  The DS9 special effects are going in the toilet as witnessed by the space combat in part 2 of "The Maquis". The crew of ST:Voyager is being picked by the PC Police.  This isn't Star Trek.  This is Space Rangers with a big budget.  Ooh.  Aah.  Thwpppt!!!

I checked, and yes it was.  STNG was cancelled some time ago, and local station here shows reruns after reruns after reruns.  That Deep Space version isn't really Star Trek.  I watched it the other day and it's more like a SciFi version of the muppets (ugly muppets at that too), with way to much of that old politically correct B.S. from a few years back tossed in to make it even that much more lame.  And then I was this other attempt at Star Trek on some space ship that doesn't go anywhere, which has even more muppets on it that the other one (bunch of oversized yodas and more).

Want can't there be a Star Trek movie that does away with the stupid multilayer plot crap with stupid George Lucas style plot subterfuges, in favor of one that features nothing but a simple good guy bad guy action drama with tons and tons of starship fighting action, combat and suspense? I mean, something like a band of terrorists take over an interstellar pleasure liner in deep space.  Star Fleet sends the Enterprise to intercept with a small crew of special ops commandos who have to figure out a way to infiltrate the liner and neutralize the threat.  And you have lots of incredible shots in space, gunbattles in space, hand to hand combat on tumbling asteroids, etc. I'm so fucking tired of the psychobabble, propaganidist nerd-plots that seem more geared toward self-indulgent, egotistical delusions of greatness.  I don't want to find God at the center of the galaxy.  I don't want to watch Star Fleet run around in some national park forest trying to convince the Horkisnorkians to save their environment.  I don't want to watch another Gothic dark sinister Borg psychobabble Matrix ripoff bullshit. I'm really angry and I'm not going to take it anymore.

Very interesting thoughts- I think America WOULD allow such a McVeigh statement to be aired, tongue-in-cheek. The American Powers That Be have never been known for good taste and sensitivity. Take our illustriuos President, for example. What a joke! Sure, let's bomb Iraq to take attention off the Monika scandal. jeez. How low can he stoop?   ps: I still think Next Gen should've had an episode with Data and KRAFTWERK jamming in the HoloDeck. That would be the KooLest! Maybe they'll guest star on V'ger or DS9. :] ROBOSMILEY

Anyway, my big beef is that Star Trek has gone beyond just having a bright outlook on the future.  In several of the movies it comes right out and attacks my religious views by talking about the myth of creationism.  And several episodes deal with how great homosexuality is, and how we are stupid if we don't like it.  Not only that, but Star Trek V came out with the retarded line "maybe God isn't out there, maybe he's right here in the human heart."  Way to go, dork.  I guess God just loves all the evil things that man does naturally then, eh?  Then, 3 episodes in a row of Deep Space 9 deal with some new age religion crap, and I quit watching it, never to return.  I will probably give Voyager a decent chance, but I have the feeling that the first 4 episodes will deal with sexual harassment, or something.   Can you say "politically correct"?  Oh, I hate the uniforms too.  I liked the ones worn in the original series.  Maybe I just don't like "seeing red" all the time.

Amen to that!  I don't know how any true Star Trek fan can seriously call the dribble that is Deep Space Nine a Star Trek show.  Voyager's problems can be traced to Jeri Taylor and her incessant need to please every special ethnic group that demands recognition in the show.  Voyager has much improved since her departure, but is too far gone to be saved.  Our only recourse is to watch First Contact and Insurrection on video, along with old TNG episodes until the next series or movie comes out.

TOS had some true humour-they get involved in silly situations sometimes and they're wonderful, adding to the humanity of and my love for the TOS crew, unlike TNG's infrequent, bland, lifeless attempts at humour, which often leave Picard and co. coming off as more cold and distant than any aliens they ever encounter.  In other words, "I, Mudd" vs. "The Outragous Okana".  Gee, which was the more endearing episode...

This is a very poor show! What a pile of junk. I have been watching Star Treck since the 60's. I've loved each and every incarnation from ST, to STNG, to DS9. I HATE Voyager. The only characters who are even mildly interesting are the Doctor, Nelix and Kess. The command staff could be beamed into space with no loss whatsoever. Total lack of personality and humor. NONE of the humanity that make/made the other shows interesting. I don't feel even mildly involved nor care about these peoples lives. It really pisses me off. How about killing off the rest of the crew and calling the show "Star Trek...Nelix the Doctor and Kess in space" Oh well just an idea.

re: Dr. Who vs Star Trek   The biggest thing going for Dr. Who is that it is new.  Every year 26 (usually) new episodes are released.  There will be over 650 at the end of the present season.  I used to watch Star Trek, but after 10 times, it does get a bit boring!  (The movies have all been below my expectations)

More bad books! More stupid toys! More conventions! More DS9! More Voyager!   A movie every 2 years! They want more, more, more! Why publish books that are good and take time to be savored and enjoyed? Publish simplistic multi-part sagas with all the depth of a campaign promise. Toys? "We'll make a new toy for each episode. We'll get rich, I tell you. Rich!" Cons? "The fans are desperate to hear an explanaition, although they won't really listen to it and will go home and watch no matter what anyone says, so we'll give them one. We'll say beig changes are coming Yee haw. We're hypocritical to the last and getting richer by the day." Ds9 and Voyager? They're really bad. Ratings are dropping at a rate that would get non-Trek cancelled, or at least overhauled. So what? "We've still got fans we can gouge to the bone to make up for that missing advertising revenue." Another movie so soon? Damn straight. "We'll write another soso script, give it a modest budget, most of which will feed Stewart's ego, and set it free. It doesn't have to be good. Hell, FC made a ton." Maybe another series... only this one in book form.   That's cheaper. Just because New Frontier reads like fanfic, albeit good fanfic(probably because Peter David, bless his creative heart, is a fan) don't mean nothin. The fans won't notice. They're cattle.

>>This looks like another case of deliberately looking for something to make a big, ostentatious show of being offended by. >This is also strikes me as a little bit strange. I had never even noticed that Worf is black( if he is). I saw the actor who plays Worf interviewed on a talk show.  He looked remarkably caucasian to me.

You know what it is about ST:TNG that makes it so awful?  It's not that the writing is bad (which it is), or the actors can't act (which they can't), or the directors are unfocused (which they are), but that the *characters* are boring.  If they were real people, they would be boring.  People would yawn when they came near, and they would never be invited to any of the good parties.  Let's be honest:  would you invite Picard to your house for dinner?  Boring, boring, boring.  I would actually welcome Shatner jumping over shuttlecrafts or climbing up mountains for minutes on end rather than watch the Next Generationers get in touch with their feelings or lack of same.  Doesn't anyone on that show have any idiosyncrasies?

rec.arts.sf-lovers, November 9, 1989

The public's mind will move to other things. When Paramount thinks about doing STX, after Episode III is out of theaters, they'll realize: why? They have plenty of other, more profitable franchises. Why deal with the high price of a Trek film? Why go to the trouble of wrangling together all the actors? Why? No one cares anymore.   No one wants to see the film except for the vocal minority who still own Data masks and toy phasers.   And they will simply decide not to.   There will be no Star Trek 10. No fifth series. We will end with the squares of the first two primes. 2 and 3 - 4 and 9. Four series and nine movies. Although the franchise may not die at that point, it will go into a *long* hibernation. Probably much longer than the one it went into following TOS.
