My belief is that anyone can be a princess.

And while I can’t turn everyone into a princess myself - this holiday season, one lucky human is going to have a fairytale ending to their year - once upon a December! The winner will receive the iconic faberge-inspired music box and necklace from the animated film Anastasia!

Did I mention the winner gets Anya’s gorgeous kokoshnik style tiara as well?

Well guess what - they do!

Wear the Power of Women (artistic theme) on your wrist with this bracelet that tells the story of Judith (the Israelite heroine) beheading Holofernes (an Assyrian general) who had been sent to take vengeance on the lands which refused to support and worship Nebuchadnezzar.

Once routinely a part of the Hanukkah narrative , Judith’s story focuses on the Jewish people surviving those who would destroy them. Judith’s story is about a woman protecting her people even when it put her in peril.

This bracelet highlights that story beautifully. This version of the story was painted by Artemisia Gentileschi, and is one of two versions she painted. The image charms are recycled from an old art history text book.

Launched as of Monday 12 November, looking to raise $15,000, and let’s see…about two hours in, and already 10% of the way there.

There is an incredible array of talent donating their time and services to this project. Please consider backing it. Both the means and the method are worthy, as is the goal.

This is worthwhile and the roster of creators is excellent.

Buddy, you wanna talk to me about ace inclusion, bear in mind that I’m old enough to remember when there were Very Serious Discussions being had about whether lesbians truly belong in the “gay community”. That’s my point of reference with respect to anti-inclusion rhetoric. So I know for a goddamn fact that your whole “the LGBT community is and always has been defined by the shared experience of homophobia” spiel is a lie, and I’m betting you do, too.

Distance Learning

Like the rest of the internet, one of the problems with distance learning is that it discourages students from seeing their peers as people. There’s no social factor, no sitting in class observing people’s quirks, or discussions in a coffee shop to make one see classmates as more than the sum of their work. It discourages compassion. I don’t know my classmates. I’ve never seen them, I’ve never talked to them, I know nothing about them. All I know is that they can’t follow instructions and they can’t write worth a damn, and there’s no human factor built in to stop me from wanting to say so. There’s nothing to mitigate my frustration and exasperation with them. And I think that’s crappy.

This is really weird timing, which I’ll get to in a sec, but yeah, this was my exact experience with my library program. It was necessary that I do distance learning (still needed to work), but apart from a 6 day boot camp I never saw my classmates again. I still remember more from that 6 day class than most of the other classes I took, and I had more fun in them too, largely because I was getting to know the other people. And then we all went our separate ways and I never felt that connection with them again.

Now I work at a community college where all instructors (even wonky ones like me) have to take an edu course, and I specifically waited for a hybrid version so that I could have at least some face to face time with my classmates. First class was tonight (see weird timing) and it was GREAT. I didn’t think I’d miss being in school, but apparently what I actually miss is being in CLASS.

I didn’t really realize how different it was going to be in distance learning. They don’t exactly warn you. It’s so... lonely. There’s no conversation. There’s no hanging out in the student union or over coffee/tea and actually discussing the course material. There’s no real way to talk out an idea. I don’t know anyone I can explain my philosophical questions to and figure out the answers, because no one around me has the background to actually understand what nitpicky cataloguing rule I’m talking about. I was at an SLA event last Friday and there were a bunch of students from teh UCLA program, which is not a distance program, and it was kind of amazing to actually be able to talk about library school things with people who understood.

My professors will barely answer questions unless I get loud and demanding about it, and sometimes not even then. I could not have imagined a group of professors less interested in student learning before this. It’s so frustrating because I have been in good programs, I have had good professors and instructors who cared. I know what I need to be successful and I expect to get it because I always have before, and not to even come close is horribly disappointing all the time.

I just don’t understand why we as a society bother to even acknowledge other apples when Honeycrisp exists.

Avatar

Because producers ship them too green sometimes and a ripe Fuji is superior to a green Honeycrisp. Also, there’s pie apples.

Busan apples are the best apples I’ve ever had, I don’t know why they aren’t available all over the world.

Sorry - a crisp Macintosh is the epitome of a cool autumn day, complete with a fire in the fireplace, a great book, and a large cup of steaming cocoa

I wish I’d known that Apple Discourse was a surefire way to get attention. I would have told y'all your Apple choices are gross, mushy, flavorless abominations years ago.

Avatar

Hey, I once saw a whole apple flame war on fail-fandomanon. Some philistine said they liked Red Delicious. Fuji, Gala, & Pink Lady are all good. I mean, I like Honeycrisp, but they’re over-priced for what they are.

Avatar

I like Fuji and Gala and the occasional green apple. I’m going to agree with you on the red delicious.

but that’s the only kinds of apple I know bleh

Avatar

Rome and Cameo are OK taste wise but have a softer, mealier texture. And Golden Delicious isn’t too bad. (Certainly better than Red Delicious, which really is a flavorless abomination in apple form.) I like the crisp varieties better, though. Honestly some of the best apples I’ve had were some rando variety growing half wild in an abandoned orchard in Sedona. (Which has since been made into a state park.) Getting the fresh off the tree makes any apple better. But they don’t grow here in Phoenix, alas. I’ve got oranges, grapefruit, limes, grapes, pomegranates, and figs in my yard, but no apples. Woe.

Jazz apples, anyone?

There are lots of good kinds of apples. But you definitely shouldn’t use Red Delicious as a stand-in for Honeycrisp.

Chuck Wendig has a thing about heirloom apples that will probably change/save your life.

I love honeycrisp and zestar for eating apples, but I live in the midwest and they’re easy to get here.

However, the best baking apples I’ve ever had were off the single remnant of an old apple orchard down the road from my grandmother’s house. You have to brave thistles and potential hiding snapping turtles to get there, but man are they brilliant. Sweeter than a granny smith but still very tart, not at all mealy, and they hold their shape like nobody’s business.

Having also witnessed the apple flame-war on FFN, it was a wild ride.

For the record, Braeburn apples are the best. Well, the very best are the ones that come off the ancient apple tree in my backyard, but the rest of you aren’t able experience those.

Y’all need to step off until you’ve tried a Stayman Winesap ok.

I’m here for Ruby Frosts in season. That’s a good eating apple. And I’m sentimentally attached to Gordons for baking ‘cause my grandma had a tree. (Yes, here in Southern California).

Also, why can’t I go to Portland next month? (Answer: Grad school, money, conference in Colorado)

And I highly recommend Apples of Uncommon Character by Rowan Jacobsen as supplementary apple reading. It’s a hoot and really got me started on my mission to try unusual varietals.

please everyone take this quiz it’s so important

my gender is VENDING MACHINE

Your gender is: THE ANGEL RAMIEL FROM NEON GENESIS EVANGELION

Your gender is: UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Your gender is not yet finished! They’re still working on it – check back in a bit.

Your gender is: THE INKY VOID BETWEEN STARS Your gender is the void that exists between celestial bodies. It is not completely empty, but consists of a hard vacuum containing a low density of particles, predominantly a plasma of hydrogen and helium as well as electromagnetic radiation, magnetic fields, neutrinos, dust and cosmic rays.

Your gender is: THREE

Your gender is the natural number following 2 and preceding 4. It is prime.

Your gender is; ALL/NONE OF THEM You exist in a state of quantum superposition, causing all of your many potential genders to be simultaneously colocated in both space and time. It is theoretically possible to measure either the position or momentum of your genderblob, but ascertaining both at the same time is prevented by the very laws of physics that keep the universe intact. I hope you’re pleased with yourself.

so gender

wow

much anti cultrul nroms

perf eyes

many cute

wow

I’m a fucking cube and IT EVEN MENTIONS THAT IT’S ONE OF THE FIVE PLATONIC SOLIDS I can’t even this is literally the most accurate gender quiz I’ve ever seen.

I’m a robot

Your gender is: FERN

Your gender is is a member of a group of about 10,560 known extant species of vascular plants that reproduce via spores and have neither seeds nor flowers. They differ from mosses by being vascular, i.e., having certain tissue that conducts water and nutrients. They have branched stems and leaves like other vascular plants.

Your gender is: TOP HAT Oh my… a little old-fashioned, aren’t we? This gender was one of the original three, standardized in 1919 at the first meeting of the International Union of Pure and Applied Gendistry. It’s fallen a little out of favor since then, but back in the day, this was the gender to have.

Avatar

Your gender is: THE MONOLITH FROM 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY Your gender appears at the beginning of the story, set in prehistoric times. It is discovered by a group of hominids and somehow triggers a considerable shift in evolution, starting with the ability to use tools and weaponry.

Your gender is: MURDER MYSTERY

Your gender is DEAD, and foul play is suspected. But the body was found in a windowless room, and the door had been locked from the inside. What’s more, the police are useless! Who can possibly piece together the evidence to solve the perfect crime? This looks like a case for… BATTLEFLICK CACKLETRASH!

So... gender free is the way to be?

Elsewhere University - Groundskeeping’s Addendum

When I posted the first Elsewhere University comic, I had no idea what it was going to turn into over the following months. The community that’s grown out of it - the stories and art and obscure bits of folklore and science, the fortunetelling asks and vague anon prophecies, all of it building on itself and branching into places that still manage to take me by surprise - has created a weirder and more wonderful world than anything I could have imagined. This comic is meant as a celebration of everything that’s grown out of the stories set in Elsewhere, and an expression of gratitude. I wasn’t even close to being able to include everything; the Library alone would need a dozen pages. For those whose works I did include, I dearly hope I did them justice. Words can’t express what this world and community have grown to mean to me, but I hope this comes close. Thank you so much, all of you. Keep making amazing things.

All works referenced below the cut, if you want to learn more about them!

A symbol of Elsewhere University: “cordati cauti auspicati” written at the top, above a long-necked horned figure.

Eyes closed. “See nothing, you’re told.” Eyes open. “Except - you do.”

“For love.” A human and inhuman figure, embracing. “Or desperation.” A human figure, holding a glowing staff, facing a large snake-bodied multi-eyed creature. “Out of curiosity.” A human taking a book titled ‘folklore’ off a shelf. “Or simply luck, good or bad.” Flower-shaped light floating between somebody’s hands, an open box below.

“You learn what you can. So now –” “Remember,” a human figure says, “groundskeeping” written on their badge.

“There are kinder ways to see than silver nitrate.” A woman wearing glasses holds out another pair. “(Although they still come at a cost.)”

Written on the silhouette of a crow: “Do not wrong the crows.” A crow perched on a human figure’s back. “They protect those they love.” A crow in flight. “But they do not love many.”

White, indistinct shape of a horse standing in water. “Do not approach the horse by the river.” Crossroads. “Or step into the crossroads before the library.”

“Something terrible sleeps below the ruins of the old English building.” Far underground, a dragon. Through the fog, something looks vaguely like a ship, or maybe a building. “The mist brings the sounds of an ocean that, if you are lucky, you will never see.” “Sometimes the pool has no bottom.” The water continues down, and down, and down.

“There are things no professor will teach you. But that does not mean you cannot learn them.” A human figure sits at a computer within a circle of salt, while outside the circle, an inhuman figure traces patterns of light. “But students of the forbidden major have more to fear than most.” Three people. “(Are more feared than most.)” The same three people, but one now has oddly-coloured eyes, one is wearing a blindfold, and one is only a shadow.

“Many professors have long pasts.” Two look human, and more or less normal. One is incredibly wrinkled, and has hair that doesn’t seem quite right. One isn’t even vaguely human, yet still wears a shirt and tie. Human figures, wearing the uniforms of cooks, custodians, or other workers. One has a scar across his face. One holds a sword. “Many non-academic staff have quests.”

“Most will help you if you can.”

“Summer is a distant dream.” A branch in full foliage; then a branch bare except for icicles. “Winter is broken to pieces - exams, breaks, short terms.”

Two different collections of inhuman figures. “Here the year turns on autumn and spring.”

“But there are things greater than the petty courts.” Covered by their hand, a different mouth, some human and some inhuman, says each syllable: “true” “roy” “al” “ty”.

“Belief makes things true, here. And theatre majors believe in more than most.” An empty stage, “break a leg”, whistling, “the Scottish Play”. A majestic inhuman figure on stage, spotlights shining on them, while the audience kneels. “But above all, they believe in The Play.”

“The forest “goes on “for ever "and always.” It gets darker, and the trees get larger.

“With the Sight, some faces will grow familiar.” Various inhuman figures, all strange and different, some beautiful, some terrifying. “Listen to the stories: familiarity is not safety.”

“In desperate straits, take refuge in the library, and follow any advice given to you there.” Bookshelves, and a human-seeming figure behind the desk at a computer.

“Above all, know that you can trust the seal.” Inside a Celtic knot, text reads “beware the lights”. “(The university tries to protect its own.)”

“Deal” comes from all three mouths of an inhuman figure. “You can trust the word of the Fair Folk, once given.” Another signs “pledge”.

“And you can trust the groundskeepers.” “After all,” the groundskeeper says, “we’re here to keep the balance.”

reblogged with image descriptions. thanks, @pomrania!

Roses are red, that much is true, but violets are purple, not fucking blue.

I have been waiting for this post all my life.

They are indeed purple, But one thing you’ve missed: The concept of “purple” Didn’t always exist.

Some cultures lack names For a color, you see. Hence good old Homer And his “wine-dark sea.”

A usage so quaint, A phrasing so old, For verses of romance Is sheer fucking gold.

So roses are red. Violets once were called blue. I’m hugely pedantic But what else is new?

My friend you’re not wrong About Homer’s wine-ey sea! Colours are a matter Of cultural contingency;

Words are in flux And meanings they drift But the word purple You’ve given short shrift.

The concept of purple, My friends, is old And refers to a pigment once precious as gold.

By crushing up molluscs From the wine-dark sea You make a dye: Imperial decree

Meant that in Rome, to wear purpura was a privilege reserved

For only the emperor!

The word ‘purple’, for clothes so fancy, Entered English By the ninth century

.

Why then are voilets Not purple in song? The dye from this mollusc, known for so long

Is almost magenta; More red than blue. The concept of purple is old, and yet new.

The dye is red, So this might be true: Roses are purple And violets are blue

.

Avatar

While this song makes me merry, Tyrian purple dyes many a hue From magenta to berry And a true purple too.

But fun as it is to watch this poetic race The answer is staring you right in the face: Roses are red and violets are blue Because nothing fucking rhymes with purple.
