quite frankly when it comes to the og trilogy i think everything comes back to when maya was first in the detention center and she said "i've been abandoned, then." and phoenix looked her dead in the eye and told her "i won't abandon you. you can count on me." like everything in the trilogy is just phoenix refusing to abandon her over and over and over again. even when maya HERSELF thinks that she's guilty in jfa he just. absolutely refuses to give up on her. when the shot rang out in the channeling room he immediately kicked the door down because he refused to abandon her. when he thought that the murderer had fled across the bridge he tried his damndest to cross it anyway even when it was on fire because he refused to abandon her. that promise was the start of how they became each other's family in the wake of mia's death and it carries throughout the whole trilogy do you GET me
