As we head into the new year, I wanted to share some of my favorite miraculous fics of 2018 <3 Not all of these began in 2018, but all of them had at least some part written this past year and they’re all beautiful and magical, written by insanely talented individuals, and you should give them a look I know in recommendation lists, people usually just give a quick summary of each fic, but I wanted to instead discuss why I love each fic, and why you should read them too 1000 Days by Engineered Lovesquare Oneshot/Teen/11,207 words If your heartstrings aren’t terribly tugged, you have no soul. It’s angsty, it’s sweet, and it’s full of beautifully written interactions. The way the story is framed is interesting and engaging, and leads the reader on an emotional journey not soon forgotten.

From the Ashes by @mini-minou Lovesquare Complete-46 Chapters/Mature/128,493 words I truly have no idea how something so full and immersive and long could have been written so amazingly well in such a short amount of time. It’s impossible to put down once you’ve started, and every single character is utilized to their fullest potential (the djwifi feels are real). Seeking Shelters by GuradianKarenTerrier Lovesquare Incomplete-25/? Chapters/General/96,929 words This isn’t a new fic, it’s been on the scene for over two years, but it only gets better and better with each chapter. It has lots of twists on classic fandom tropes, and it’ll make you ache in a way you never have before. On a completely unrelated note, I am so extremely ready to adopt Adrien Agreste.  Not Only You by @seasonofthegeek Marinette/Nino Incomplete-9/? Chapters/Teen/19,030 words If you’d like to have your heart smashed in your chest and then lovingly pieced back together in the most delicious way, this is the fic for you. It’s angsty but also sweet and comforting. Each character is so flushed out and governed by their own realistic motivations, it’s all-too-easy to get sucked into this world (pun intended).

let’s stop before it gets messy by @agrestenoir Lovesquare Oneshot/Teen/5,625 words Honest interactions between friends, misunderstandings that lead to deep and necessary conversations, fantastic dialogue (all of drunk Marinette’s lines are pure gold), and a sweet ending for all those cold and lonely 2018 nights.

Cauchemar by @xiueryn Lovesquare Oneshot/Explicit/39,685 words It’s been months and I still think about this fic all the damn time I love it so much because it’s such a wonderful blend of miraculous and horror, which I’ll admit is a bit of a niche, but it’s just so well done. It’s one of the most original takes on the miraculous characters I’ve ever seen, and it’s more well written than most published novels.

Cinderette by RescueSatellite Lovesquare Incomplete-4/? Chapters/Teen/13,111 words It’s the second part of a cinderella story that I’ve been following since its beginning a few years ago. Marinette and Adrien’s interactions are always a joy to read and the story lends itself to the involvement of lots of other characters from the show. There’s never a dull chapter. New Year by @megatraven Alya/Marinette Oneshot/General/1,734 words Once again, Meg showers us in the most beautiful alyanette (renanette) we’ve ever seen. It’s cute and sweet and the perfect piece to curl up with before bed. The way Marinette and Alya speak with each other is fun and adorable, and it’s easy to see how such a strong friendship leads into a beautiful romance.

Tyger, Tyger, Burning Bright by @dfcfanfics Lovesquare Complete-9 Chapters/Teen/68,030 words Stories that explore how different miraculouses could be used will always be some of the most fascinating to me, and this one is no exception. It’s endlessly fun and interesting, and very difficult to put down once you’ve started.

Speaking His Love Language by @buggachat Lovesquare Oneshot/General/1,290 words We all know how oblivious these two dorks are, but it’s extremely entertaining to see it play out in this fic. The way Marinette and Adrien interact with each other is sweet and endearing, and it’s easy to leave the fic desperately wishing it was canon and craving more.

Beside You In the Moonlight by @damagectrlwrites Lovesquare Incomplete-11/15 Chapters/Teen/94,220 words I anxiously await each and every update of this story. There are so many times I’m ready to pull out my hair and scream at the obliviousness of Adrien or Marinette, but ultimately I adore the way they’re written. I love the exploration of Marinette getting a miraculous after Adrien has had his for a while, it leads to really interesting character dynamics on every side of the lovesquare.

Found by @seasonofthegeek Adrien/Nino/Marinette Incomplete-5/? Chapters/Mature/11,387 words Once again, Season attempts to kill her readers from both angst and phenomenal writing. We didn’t even stand a chance. It’s angsty, but also heartwarming, and every character’s emotional journey is far too real for the reader to remain unattached.  There were definitely even more amazing fics that came out/were updated in 2018, but these are some of my very favorites, and a few of them are stories that I haven’t really seen on too many rec lists and are in serious need of more recognition.

I hope 2018 has treated you well and look forward to what 2019 brings!

I disagree. The makeup is clearly reflective of traditional Geisha makeup which is yellowface and therefore racist. Furthermore, the girl is wearing a kimono, a garment that has for ages carried cultural significance. Assuming that she is white how can you think this is ok? I am japanese, in japan at this very moment. The only people who think culture shouldnt be shared are racists like you.

A vast majority of Japanese people actually enjoy other people making an effort to spread and enjoy japanese culture, and encourage it. Many make businesses in deliberately taking pictures of people in kimono. A common omiage (gift) for foreigners from japanese people is traditional japanese things such as kimonos, tea seats, shisa dog statues, ect.

And to top it off, basically 80 percent of japanese customs, traditions, and food, came from other countries. Japanese is an integration of different cultures, like america. Japan takes influences from places like korea, china, russia, and europe. If japan stuck to itself, there would be no tempura, japanese tea, tea ceremonies, kabuki, japanese bread, japanese curry, j- pop, anime, cars, or modern fishing techniques. The picture is not “yellow face” they are not making fun of asians. In fact, it looks like they put extra care and research into their work.

The only reason that you have a problem with this is because that little girl is white and you know that it is acceptable on tumblr to crap all over white people. The only racist here is you.

I live in Japan and I’d like to back up this sentiment. 

Recently a museum in Boston came under a lot of fire for allowing visitors to wear a ‘kimono’ (it was featuring a painting my Monet of a girl – a white girl – in a kimono, and the museum had replicas made that guests of ANY RACE could wear to mimic the painting, Pageant-of-the-Masters style). After protests and heated debate, the museum closed the event.

I was living in Japan at the time, and out of all the *actual* Japanese people I asked, not a single one was offended by the event. Rather, they were excited that people half a world away were showing interest in their culture, and were sad that visitors could no longer enjoy the event.

This party, though somewhat silly in application, is an attempt at experiencing and appreciating another culture. The mom who put this together is not an expert on Japan, but she did her best. She got a lot of things right: there are few things Japan loves more than tea, Pocky, and sakura. 

Where do you draw the line for who is “allowed” to learn about Japan? If the girl were of Japanese descent, would that make it ok (even though her citizenship would be the same as the girl from the photo)? If one of the girl’s parents were from Japan, then would it be ok? 

Are you only allowed to make pizza if you live in Italy? If you’re an Italian immigrant? How do we decide these things??

You can’t say you want to dismantle racism and then in the next breath make rules – based on race – for who people can wear, try, or eat, especially when the intent is obviously to have fun experiencing a culture (as opposed to having fun by making fun of a race or culture, like blackface does). 

When you tell people they can only experience things ‘meant for their race’, it totally smacks of segregation to me and I can’t stand it. As someone who (obviously) loves Japan, I say let people learn about it, let people experience it, let people appreciate it. You don’t have to know every single thing about a culture to enjoy it.
