helena wells, 2x01 time will tell

I was going just do a pithy tag here, but this is such an interesting moment considering what we now know about Helena. She's a sad figure, devastated by tragedy and the trauma of the bronze, to the point that she will destroy civilisation as some sort of vengeance/catharsis/chance for an eventual better future. She’s not actually evil or even uncaring. She cares desperately.

So why's she being all gloating and vampy evil here?

I think she's pumping herself into the role she believes she needs to play, a cold-hearted villainess ready to manipulate whoever she must in order to achieve her ends. It's so theatrical: if she had a mustache she'd twirl it.

Because I think Helena needs people to preform for, to show off in front of and soak up the admiration of in order to keep up her creative momentum. Once that was the reading public, then Chaturanga and Wolcott; soon it will be Myka. But right now she's all alone. So she's showing off to herself.

I was living in my own binary, and I was like there's no way that I can be androgynous with bigger boobs now. How I feel inside is the thing that I needed to work through." JANELLE MONÁE
Everything was so clear then. We were waging the grand campaign, good versus evil. These days, black and white just dissolve into grayscale. I was wrong.
