I heard a big animal smack into the window, and went out to check. I’d expected it to be a Lucanus capreolus stag beetle, but didn’t think he’d be this big! the largest mandibles I’ve seen on one of these so far
capreolus isn’t a particularly large-jawed species to begin with, but compared to all the other males (+1 female) I’ve found dead & preserved, he’s huge!
he was also very lively and ready to fight which I enjoyed since I usually only find sickly or dying males during the day. I sent him back into the night and hope he finds a good brawl or a female or both if he’s lucky
