"you can't hear pictures"
Okay but what about

eurovision legends that wore green, did not win the contest but won people's hearts
Eurovision at its core (at least how we interact with it on Tumblr dot com) is the embodiment of "I didn't say it was good, I said I like it"/"I didn't say it was bad, I said I hate it"
Since people are being obnoxious:
"My Sister's Crown" is expressing solidarity with Ukraine and condemning Russia's invasion. This is incredibly obvious. "My sister" is Ukraine. The "you" in lines like "you can take your hands back" is clearly Russia. They put a veneer of girl power anthem over it just in case the EBU tried to strike them down for being "too political." I mean "you can't steal our souls" is a direct quote from Jamala's Eurovision winning song "1944." If you can't tell whose side Czechia is on, you might just be stupid.
And here we go, westsplaining with a shade of gaslighting.
You've got Ukrainians explaining in detail why exactly this rhetoric is anywhere between unfortunate (even if it was done with good intentions) and harmful, and you tell them, "shut up, you stupid dimwits, it is actually supporting you!".
Let's go over the lyrics, shall we?
"All the sisters of the world/ Come together with a prayer/Choose love over power"
- what does that even mean? I tell you what - it's meaningless placating.
"No one wants more boys dead" - really? Then why is one country sending more and more "boys" here to kill and be killed? Must mean that A LOT of people want them dead. We, for one, sure want all those "boys" who come here to rape and murder dead.
I've said it in a different post and I'll say it again: if you want to support a group of people, you need to make sure it's okay with that group. And not go on and insult those people further.
"All the sisters of the world/ come together with a prayer/ choose love over power" is a call to everyone to support Ukraine. And asking Russians to resist their government. It is saying "seeking power over Ukraine or within your country's hirearchy is not worth this. Stop and choose love and solidarity."
"No one wants more boys dead" is a perhapse clumsy way of calling attention to the horrors of war. Again the messaging being "is this what you really want? Your sons killing and being killed? Choose better."
Media literacy is not everyone's strong suit. And some people are feeling a little fragile and lashing out at those who do not deserve it. I admit, I was being a little flippant, but the only "analysis" I have seen for why the song is bad amounts to "anything that says that war is bad is calling for Ukraine to surrender" which is insidious to say the least.
Stop listening to ultra-nationalists, I've seen plenty of Ukrainians commenting on the video that they adore the song and apreciate the support. There are diverse opinions amoung Ukrainians.
What does it even have to do with ultra-nationalism? Russian ultra-nationalism though is a factor here.
Russians have used the "brotherhood/sisterhood" rhetoric for centuries as means of destroying its neighbors (especially Ukrainians and Belarusians). "We are brothers" -> "we are one people" -> "Ukrainians and their culture don't exist, and they just speak a funny dialect of russian for stupid peasants". THIS is why it's so triggering and so unfortunate.
As for your interpretation of the "come together in prayer" line.... well, most russian "sisters" support our genocide, actively or passively, just like most russians of all genders. We do not want to "come together" with them, we want them to leave us alone.
All this kumbaya rhetoric does more harm than good.
And yes, a lot of Ukrainians like it because they hear a line in Ukrainian in the song and think, "aww that's nice", without knowing what the rest of the song is saying. Genius pandering.
The song is AT BEST bad taste, and even IF it's done with good intentions - it was ignorant. Kinda like Switzerland representative's song, but to make the matters worse, both the band and the fans double down to shout over Ukrainian voices to justify why it's actually okay.
The song was made known last year, the discussion started last year, zero meaningful changes were made. This stops being ignorance - because you can't pretend they didn't know how their song is perceived, they knew and stream-rolled over us anyway, in hopes of using Ukraine as a prop that might get them the points (same as Swiss rep and, I think I forgot someone else), in all likelihood.
This bugs me even more, tbh. A song about a son's love, gratitude and filial piety to his mother was deemed too political for Eurovision by a lot of fans last year, but the song the fans themselves admit is political in and out - somehow is fine. Kalush got demonized by a part of EV fandom last year, but I don't hear anyone who was vocally against "Ukraine winning on pity and politics" saying a thing about this fucking bullshit now.
