Accountability, Thoughts And Other Random Things

@babelshat-library

Sam | He/Him | I made this thing solely to post as a way of staying accountable with my writing but… uh… I kinda like it here

Sometimes I'm writing, and then all of a sudden my eyes roll to the back of my head, I start foaming at the mouth, and a new, perfect plot point emerges from the depths of my psyche like it's been placed there forcefully by a divine power. It's either God or Satan, and I don't know if I care which.

I need a word with whoever thought hayfever was a good idea. Like pls can I not be allergic to outside at the only time of year I want to be outside thanks

My projects, as of June 2023

Second Draft:

- Spiritwell

A story about a girl escaping her old life, and getting wrapped up in a mission to save a dying city.

First Draft:

- Bloodfire

A story about the prince of a nation and his mission to reclaim the crown after being wrongly pronounced as dead.

- Rubyswift

A pirate heist story about a band of ragtag friends as they attempt to sink the biggest ship of the greatest nation.

- Project Paranormal

A story about two old friends reuniting to hunt down a shapeshifting monster.

- Ferryman

A story about a boy in the afterlife trying to find his family.

- Thief

A story about a heist, but the main character realises that the person he is stealing from is his long lost brother.

Outlining:

- Eternal Winter (Current)

A survival story with zombie-elements about a seemingly eternal winter shrouding an island, and the people’s journey to escape said island.

It’s been a hot minute since my last writing update so thought I’d get back into the swing of things on this random Tuesday

I’ve spent a lot of time trying to decide whether or not I should carry on working on Rubyswift. I’ve chosen to put it on hold at the moment because I don’t feel massively invested in the story anymore, and I think that might be to do with a lack of planning. My outline is certainly my most detailed yet, but I think I need even more.

Sooooo I started something new… again… which I’m calling Eternal Winter for now, though I’ll just call it Eternal for the sake of ease. I’m currently still in the outlining process with this one and will be for a while, my next update will likely be when I start actually writing it instead of next week.

Speaking of which, I might stop the weekly updates. Depending on how I feel next week. I feel like ‘major progress’ updates might be better, where once I finish a chapter or hit major plot points I update on here? I’m not entirely sure yet, still figuring that out.

I know it's been talked about before but I still don't think it's been emphasized how *fucked* today's internet experience is for children. I didn't know what the word "discourse" was when I was 8, or 10, or even 13. I was too busy playing the nigh-limitless amount of flash games out there on the internet and making sure my neopets were fed. Like I cannot stress enough that if I had free time on the computer, 9 times out of 10 I could go and play a jaunty little game someone had whipped up and put out there for no other reason than that creating games was awesome and easy to do. Or go to some page that existed just to collect memes; you see back then there were more than 4 sites, and you didn't need accounts to visit them. I didn't get targeted ads. I wasn't exposed to any sort of political ideology. I spent a lot of time on the computer but no one site monopolized my time or tried to fucking manipulate me into using it more. The internet was for more than one thing back then, and honestly I don't think enough people realize how much has been stolen from us.

I understand the feelings of despair, but the rest of the internet is still very much out there. There’s a growing and dedicated movement to take it back from corporations. I’ll link a few of the neat little websites I’ve found on Neocities and in various other places. https://sadgrl.online/ - A good jumping-off point that has html guides, links to webrings, and other cool stuff.

https://deathgenerator.com - You ever wanted to make one of those funny fake video game screenshots, but you don’t have the patience to do the image editing? Well, here you go!

https://signal.vercel.app/edit - A neat little free online midi editor! You can upload midi files or compose your own!

https://dan-ball.jp/en/javagame/dust/ - A cool falling-sand-type game. The website it’s hosted on is full of other cool games, most of which are free and don’t require flash (rip flash)

https://webshark.neocities.org/gamepages - Speaking of games that don’t require flash, here’s a whole page of ‘em. Most are fairly simple, but they’re still a lot of fun.

https://ocremix.org/ and https://vgmusic.com/ - Two websites that have been around since almost forever. OCRemix is home to video game music remixes, and VGMusic has a MASSIVE library of video game midis! I used to spend a lot of time on VGMusic in particular when I was a kid.

https://cooltext.com/ - You can make cool-looking text! They also have free fonts you can download.

And this is by no means a comprehensive list, no. This is just a sampling. There’s so much out there just waiting to be discovered-- you just have to go looking for it! (And remember, kids, be careful out there-- computer viruses and malware are still very much a threat, so I encourage you to get uBlock Origin or NoScript-- or both-- for your web browser before you start web surfing! Also never give out any personal information! And for the love of all that is good, and for your own safety, please stay away from the porn sites if you’re under the age of 18.)

Have fun, stay safe, and

HEY KIDS, YOU WANT MORE GAMES? ITCH.IO HAS PLENTY OF WEIRD GAMES YOU CAN PLAY ON YOUR BROWSER OR DOWNLOAD ON YOU COMPUTER. Just remember to always check tags and description to avoid finding things that are for a much older audience.

There's also special browsers like NuMuKi that you can still play old flash games on!!!

Last week I wrote 1272 words on Rubyswift, and 689 words on Project Paranormal

Project Paranormal was just a uni project, and I’ve now finished and submitted it— it’s still an incomplete story though, and I might come back to it one day. For now, though, I won’t be working on it unless I really feel like it

Last week I wrote a grand total of zero words! I think that being at home is not a good environment for writing, so hopefully I can pick things back up when I get back to uni.

I just ran probably the best dnd oneshot of my life on 4 hours of sleep, hungover and with less than half an hour spent on prep

I’m calling that a success

Last week I didn’t write anything. I was ill for most of the week and that kind of stopped all of my momentum so that now, even though I’m better, I can’t seem to start again.

I’ll see if I can get back into things this week.

Last week I wrote 1101 words on Rubyswift, not as much as I wanted to but it’s still a lot so I’m okay with that.

No progress on any other projects, and I’m still going to just focus on Rubyswift for camp nano.

Last week I started another new project, which is what I’ve decided to do for camp nano. I’m calling it Rubyswift, and have completed the outline and surprisingly I’m pretty happy with it! I’ve also already written 538 words on it.

I also found an old short story I’d started working on and picked that back up and edited it. The word count is currently 864 but that’s a mix of new writing and old edited writing, not sure of the exact stats. I’ve called it ‘Ferryman’.

I wrote 762 words on Project Paranormal, as well as editing some of what I’ve already got.

No progress on Spiritwell, Bloodfire or Thief, and there probably won’t be for a while. My main focus for the coming weeks is going to be Rubyswift, solely because it’s my camp nano project.
