not disagreeing with the overall sentiment of this post but the juxtaposition of "reddit is having problems because no one wants to do unpaid moderation work that sucks" and "tumblr is having problems because their moderation is 100% automated [side note: is it? I don't think this is true lol] so humans don't have to do moderation work that sucks" is... maybe ironic isn't the right word. the obvious solution is to hire more human content moderators but even for-hire moderators are almost always underpaid contractors, often in the global south, often asked to review content in their non-native language, and 99% of companies will never ever pay them better because they simply cannot afford to without eating into their (often nonexistent) bottom line. which is bad. so perhaps this whole social media thing is untenable
