The state of Georgia did what with voter registrations?!

The friend who tipped me off to this said he hasn't seen anyone else talking about it so here's the elaboration.

Georgia added an online portal that lets you cancel other people's voter registrations if you have all the requisite personal information (like the stuff that keeps getting leaked in massive data breaches).

Supposedly this was so people could cancel the registrations of dead relatives, but like. There's apparently no requirement to prove that the person is dead.

GUESS WHAT?

it's the 10 YEAR anniversary of the most amazing event EVER! *explodes like a confetti cannon*

that's right, tumbeasts, Dashcon happened TEN YEARS ago!!!!!

if you're new here and don't know what that is, LET ME LEARN YOU A THING:

Dashcon was an event just for US. for the freaks, the weirdos, the fangirls. it had cosplayers and fanfic writers and a BALLPIT. And--

[a comical *thunk* as lauren hits her imposter over the head with a shovel]

jesus, guys, sorry about that. something went wrong with my hybrid cloning/time machine.

ANYWAY. Dashcon happened 10 years ago this weekend and @overchers and I have episodes for this very occasion!

we talked to two brave Tumblr employees who were there:

and THEN we talked to Lochlan, the Tumblr user who started it all:

(transcripts for those episodes here and here)

so we've got dashcon coverage from both sides! get the inside scoop and relive the glory days.

People online (white) will create so many conspiracy theories that just boil down to "Asians aren't complete human beings with their own thoughts and autonomy" like maybe Chinese people are just going about their day to day life. Maybe a video of a North Korean person like chilling is just a person chilling, who isn't going to power down like a robot once the video is over. Stop being a fucking creep.

I was living in Shanghai in 2020 and 2021, and after the initial covid chaos, when things had settled down and the contact tracing and testing systems were in place, things were quite stable, the case numbers were low, etc. Like, you can have an opinion on how extreme the control measures were, but they were effective. Basically nobody I knew got covid, and like, I was taking the densely packed subway at rush hour every day. If it was out there to be exposed to, I'd have been exposed.

And I remember telling people back home in North America about this, and they just... wouldn't believe me. They were insistent that there were mass cases, mass death, and that the government was just covering it up.

And I was like, "No, like, we'd know. Like, you know tons of people, if they were getting covid and getting locked down, or worse, dying, you'd be aware of it." But nothing would persuade them. And I'd ask how it was supposed to be the case that tons of people were dying, and we just weren't noticing. And pretty often they'd say something like,

"Well, there's so many people. They just don't value life there like we do."

Which is a fucked up thing to say, even if you're talking about, like, labour safety standards, which is nominally what people pretend to be talking about when they say shit like that usually. But to talk about people dying of covid? Like, you think when a Chinese person loses a relative to covid they just don't care? Because there's a lot of other Chinese people?

So, yeah, a lot of white North Americans were perfectly happy to whole-ass tell me that they don't see Chinese people as complete human beings.

as someone living in america theres sensation similar to having by balls slapped from hearing an american claim that american culture values human lives. like yeah sure believable, homeless people and immigrants are treated worse than stray dogs but suddenly we're a bastion of love and philanthropic prosperity when we have to be compared to any asian country.

It's because the idea of valuing human life is somehow valuing our "autonomy" and not our security. We can choose to wear masks. We can choose what healthcare provider we want. We can choose to dedicate our lives to capitalism to make money.

Americans are brainwashed into believing that limiting choices is a removal of valuing individuals. Even when you may be limiting choices to ones that make society better for everyone involved. Americans believe that having the freedom to shoot your own balls off is a virtue, and a country that would stop you is literally Satan.

"A Balor in its most active state is held together more by undulating, flame-like masses of nanite swarms than any physical structure."

fun fact about me: When I was 6 years old I sent so much hate mail to the president (the second Bush) that the mail carrier had to tell my mom I needed to stop before we got FBI’d

I was COMPLETELY unaware of the US political scene or why the adults in my life hated Bush, but I knew I hated him because he let people shoot wolves from helicopters and that’s mean and shitty

I also had a poor grasp on how stamps worked, so given that I wasn’t allowed to continually throw money away by putting stamps on my presidential hate mail, a lot of the times I just drew squares with little pictures inside on the corner.

Love, love, love reading more proof that everyone should encourage the children in their lives to write to elected officials--it teaches them about citizenship and can also be very funny.

When I taught second grade, one of the options for students who had finished their work was to write a letter to the president. I would send all of the letters in a big envelope at the end of every month.

Watching my students get more and more frustrated with him (and concerned about his wellbeing) was not the result I'd hoped for when I came up with the idea, but it was kind of hilarious.

See, Obama had a standard packet with information and activities about his dog he'd send in response to letters from very young citizens...and of course his office sent one back to our class every single time we sent mail.

So eventually all of the letters looked something like this:

Dear President Obama, I am writing about the environment. I am sad that the Great Barrier Reef is hurt. Also the Amazon Rainforest. Can you help? PLEASE DON'T WRITE BACK TO TELL ME ABOUT YOUR DOG AGAIN. WE ALREADY KNOW ALL ABOUT BO. WE COMPLETED THE MAZE AND COLORED HIM IN. It is good that you love your pet a lot. But try to remember the environment. It is also important.

hey, next month i have to pay over $800 of yearly bills, and with my regular monthly income only being about 1000 usd this will most likely result in putting me back in massive debt. any contributions my ko-fi help w this (and monthly contributions help make things like this easier in the future) and also helps fund my work! my proudest investigative journalism work should also finally come out in july as well, it took over 5 months to complete so if you wanna help fund future research of similar size this is a great way to do that!
