LGBTQ+ Pride in New York City, 1994

For the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in 1994, flag creator Gilbert Baker was commissioned to make the world’s largest flag. The flag took months of planning and work done by teams of volunteers. The flag utilized the basic six colors of the rainbow and measured thirty feet wide by a mile long.

The above is from this article from The Guardian.  The images are from MYA Network. The caption on their website reads:

Source: ‘When a sperm and egg get together, the body creates tissue in order to support the developing pregnancy.  Here are photos of that tissue from 5-9 week pregnancies.  This is called the gestational sac, and it’s like the “house” for the pregnancy. Inside this sac there are cells that have the potential to become a fetus but there is no visible embryo at this stage. We rinsed off the blood and menstrual lining (decidua) for these photographs.’

The published images sparked a lot of debate, leading to the story being picked up by other news outlets. For example:

Source: ‘Last week, the Guardian published images of pregnancy tissue after abortions in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. The small size and appearance of the tissue were shocking to many. We have all absorbed, knowingly and unknowingly, the pervasive anti-abortion narrative that a pregnancy resembles a tiny baby starting in the earliest weeks. Though an early embryo can be seen under the magnification of ultrasound, it can take months for it to be perceptible to the naked eye.’

Source: ‘People have responded in disbelief, citing the (magnified) images they’ve seen on ultrasounds. […] ”Think of the illustrations on pregnancy and medical websites. The Mayo Clinic, one of the preeminent medical organizations in the country, shows week-by-week illustrations of embryonic and fetal development without any context of scale, like the rulers in the MYA photos.’

As stated in the article, whilst people talk about a ‘heartbeat’ at 6 weeks, there is no heart developed at this stage - only a group of cells that will become part of the heart.

Source: ‘But what exactly do we mean when we talk about a “fetal heartbeat” at six weeks of pregnancy? Although some people might picture a heart-shaped organ beating inside a fetus, this is not the case. Rather, at six weeks of pregnancy, an ultrasound can detect “a little flutter in the area that will become the future heart of the baby,” said Dr. Saima Aftab, medical director of the Fetal Care Center at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami. This flutter happens because the group of cells that will become the future “pacemaker” of the heart gain the capacity to fire electrical signals, she said.’

It should also be noted that the images show an embryo, not a fetus, until the 9th week.

Source: ‘In human pregnancies, a baby-to-be isn’t considered a fetus until the 9th week after conception, or week 11 after your last menstrual period (LMP).’

The co-founders of the MYA Network responded in a New York Times article.

Source: ‘Many people, even those who support abortion rights, did not believe the photos were accurate. Some insisted we had deliberately removed the embryos before taking the photos. The images weren’t consistent with those often seen in embryological textbooks, magnified on ultrasounds or used in anti-abortion propaganda; these enlarged images are not what you see with the naked eye after an abortion. A Stanford gynecologic pathologist has validated our photos, but many people could not believe the pictures were presented unaltered.

I’ve never seen pictures like this.

on my hands and knees. scrubbing sticky spilled beverage off of the floor. it was heavily flavored with (artificial) vanilla, had a strong scent. so sticky, so much sugar. a customer had dropped a beverage can. management had said “don’t worry, we can write it off, it’s not that expensive. go wipe it up.” outside, it was snowing, heavily. there with me on the floor, puddles of melted snow, grimey, brought indoors by customers’ boots. apron stained. while there, on the floor, repetitive scrubbing, i considered that an English sugar-plantation-owner in Barbados in the 1790s was likely to have been 5-times richer than their wealthiest land-owning (white) childhood friends still living back in Britain proper. i wondered how vanilla has come to be so inexpensive. (is it actually “inexpensive”? or do landscapes and people still die to grow and harvest it?) where did this vanilla come from? where was the coffee grown? all of this sugar just tossed aside. like nothing. 125, 200, 350 years ago, vast amounts of people were enslaved and died for this sugar. entire communities, whole cultures invaded, destroyed, to bring Empires sugar, the Georgian-era equivalent of this spilled “BANG Birthday Cake Bash (TRADEMARKED) Keto-Coffee Protrein-Enhanced Energy Drink” which i’m scrubbing off of the floor, on my knees, almost in an act of worship. “we can write it off.” in 1540, how many people were murdered in Central America by Spanish colonizers to acquire this amount of vanilla for shipment back to a court in Iberia? in 1610, how much reward would an Italian merchant vessel have earned for delivering this coffee from North Africa to Venice? in 1805, how much cash would a London tea-shop-owner have paid for this sugar? all so easily acquired, now? in 2020, how many people still work and die so that these ingredients can be shipped to the Europe and the US, offered at such “inexpensive” price? now all of these substances are just … a sticky puddle on the floor? a stain on the apron? after scrubbing the floor, i entered the walk-in cooler, the white noise of the fans a reprieve, to read the list of ingredients on the labels of the coffee/energy drinks. “guava.” “acai berry.” “Nesquik Double Chocolate ready-to-drink milk.” how did it get here? a loud ringing. motion detectors. customers are entering the store. too much stimulation. supposed to be “working.” don’t know how long i have stood in the cooler. deep breath. attempt to revert to normal workplace behavior and thoughts. had to go back to “helping customers.” cannot openly discuss botany and colonization and land-theft of Regency-era British Empire. i leave the cooler. same day, a co-worker: “hey, check out the new hand lotion, really helps with the bleach burns, smells awesome!” me: “oh?” she says: “coconut and vanilla!” again my thoughts are dragged away: “what harms have come to the islands of the South Pacific? how did this substance extracted from tropical plants find its way here, to this snowy landscape? why is the coconut-oil lotion so cheap? who paid the real cost to bring it here? this process was not passive. which institutions stole local plant knowledge and patented this variety of the plant? who was forced under duress to harvest the coconut?” violence.

Turns out that in real life it’s not just the tiny skinny ones who end up actually being trans women. Sometimes it’s the people who are built like linebackers, the people so tall they develop back issues hunching over from trying not to be the biggest person in the room, the people who can’t even find well-fitting clothing at big and tall stores, the people who “thigh-highs” barely go above the knee, the people with broad shoulders and high hairlines that bangs can’t hide. And yes a lot of these features aren’t seen as feminine or cute or beautiful. I’m sorry that I resemble stereotypical transphobic caricatures a bit too closely, and I’m sorry that acknowledging the existence of people that look like me might make getting trans acceptance from cis people a lot harder. But frankly I’m one of the lucky ones who realized things before I started balding, one of the lucky ones who has many years of youth spent taking hormones in my future to somewhat alleviate the problems that make me hate my own body. And I don’t think any of these issues makes me or anyone else less of a woman, and if no one else wants to even try to depict people like us in a flattering manner then I’ll do my damnedest to do it myself

To everyone who used this post as an excuse to say “Awooga big women 👀” in the tags please read the fucking room

seeing everyone just mindlessly sign up for threads despite all the clear warning signs feels like I’m living in Sailor Moon or a magical girl anime episode where the Monster of the Day just set up shop over night and their product is literally draining your lifeforce for the Dark Kingdom but people keep going there

you're not

I saw a post going around talking about how lots of things other than water do hydrate you, even caffeinated drinks, and the former first responder in me wanted to yell at that post so bad but it didn't seem productive. So I'll just mention it now. Yes, under normal conditions, even caffeinated drinks with their diuretic effect do end up hydrating you more than dehydrating you. Yes sugary drinks hydrate you along with all the extra sugar. But under abnormal circumstances, when it is so hot that you need to SURVIVE the heat, you really can't drink just anything that has a bit of a hydrating effect while also filling your system with sugar or caffeine or dairy that taxes your system when it's being strained to the max. You will not survive the heat and you will not avoid heat illnesses like heat stroke. In the kind of heat that your body can't handle on its own and needs your help, you will hurtle your body toward heat stroke faster if you're drinking nothing but drinks filled with sugar or dairy or caffeine. That little bit of a hydrating effect cannot keep up with the sheer speed with which the heat is dehydrating you. The caffeine added to that will actually end up making the heat stroke come on faster. You simply HAVE to bite the bullet and get yourself OK with drinking water if you don't like it, or else stay inside the air conditioning and don't go anywhere until the temperature drops. Otherwise, you will be the one who drops. Also, don't run around without having eaten enough food. Give food or money to people who seem like they can't afford to eat enough to have a balanced healthy system capable of surviving high heat. Enough food and lots of water. That's the only way your body will survive the abnormal conditions of high heat.

Question for people who use screen readers or text to speech/audio

When a post on here has lots of emojis, special fonts/text or lots of keysmashes, what is a way to tag those posts so that you guys don't have to sit there listening to nonsense for a minute straight?

Thanks!

the best tag in my opinion would be "screenreader unsafe" !! and i would deeply appreciate things like that being tagged whenever possible , because ... it fully crashes cheaper screenreaders like mine and i have to restart it >_<

Is there a limit of emojis or bigger fonts (the headline font, not fancy fonts) that's acceptable for cheap screen readers, or has everything the potential of crashing it?

Asking because my screen reader reads headline fonts and bolded words just fine, and I use them to make my posts accessible for people who can't read long texts. So if a little is alright, but I unnecessarily tagged it as dangerous, I think this could be quite annoying...

Same for emojis, I rarely use more than two in a row and was thinking of adding something in brackets that describes the emojis right before the emojis start, so that the screen reader could warn you that you'll hear some nonsense and tells you what kind of emojis are used before the nonsense starts.

This wouldn't make sense if it immediately breaks cheap screen readers, that's why I ask.

actual web fonts dont effect my screenreader at all personally !! bolded or otherwise emphasized text in posts just reads as normal text , and theres no difference between how my screenreader reads arial and how it reads comic sans

for emojis , it depends on the emojis being used , because its that it tries to read the emoji names as fast as possible for some dumbass reason — so longer emoji names make it crash faster . id say it can handle about five to seven emojis in a row , before getting upset . if theres text in between them , for example a period , it can handle it fine !!

those ugly unicode fonts from fancy font generator sites also dont immediately crash my screenreader — it can take about ten unicode characters at once before crashing — but hearing "mathematical fraktur capital E , mathematical fraktur capital M , mathematical fraktur capital I , mathematical fraktur capital L , mathematical fraktur capital Y" is the most obnoxious thing ever and makes me block people 😭

self is use different screen readers for different devices ( phone , ipad , computer ) and is agree with all above

but need people understand that All Screen Reader Different .

self is have one that just skip skip paragraph for no reason and no know why , have another one that force stop at bold word and need press play at spot again . have another that no do it some can read out abbreviation like “brb” as “be right back” , some dont

and pretty much all screen reader self use , alt text directly on image is Never Read never work , is hate tumblr alt text , self feel best put as image description under picture as regular text

is Extremely Important know that screen reader Not Work All Text Same . and self use all free screen reader that come with device accessible setting ( phone ipad ) or extension on web browser (computer )

screen reader not one thing , is come across time self say about inacessible text that because someone want help so self say “self screen reader can read headers , but no all screen reader can” and person took it as “ok then all is fine no need change self still accessible !!” like wh ,, frustrate .

self Is Agree with all above , just want people know screen reader not monolith like many think , diverse like mobility aids (and most very janky ahaha) some work some dont with thing
