not to be crazy but his scream here reminded me for some reason of viktor’s scream when he’s running on the harbour which is funny because in vik’s case he’s crying out because of the functionality of his leg whereas here jayce cries out over the damage to his leg 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ is that anything

This is one of those things where the discourse is just completely broken. Both of these takes are shit and no one is concerned about the actual problem.

Republicans want to bring back incandescents because they just want to trigger the libs and have decided light bulbs are woke.

And the "LEDs are fine" crowd are throwing people with flicker sensitivities under the bus. And, no, you don't have to be "pretty far on the spectrum" to notice a difference. And even if you did... why in the world is this person so dismissive of the millions of autistic folks?

LEDs, for the most part, are superior to incandescent bulbs. Collectively they save people billions of dollars in energy costs and greatly reduce fossil fuel use. You have more options for color and brightness. You can control them with your phone. LEDs are fantastic.

Unfortunately there is a design flaw that makes LEDs hard to use for certain people. Due to AC power, most LEDs have a 60hz refresh rate. Meaning they turn off and on 60 times per second. With incandescents this didn't matter because the filament didn't have time to lose its glow between cycles.

Most people cannot see this flicker in LEDs. But there are millions of people who are sensitive to it and it can cause migraines and discomfort.

The solution is definitely not to go back to incandescents. There are flicker free LEDs and I think with some regulation we could make sure all LEDs are flicker free or at least make sure flicker free bulbs are easy to find and not priced at a premium.

Thankfully there is a group testing bulbs to find the ones that will most likely cause no discomfort. They call themselves the Flicker Alliance and their website has a pretty decent selection of tested and approved bulbs.

So if you feel like your LED bulbs might be causing you distress, that is a good resource to try. I think there is also something you can do to make sure the LED drivers are using DC power, but I haven't really looked into that.

It's probably not as important as preventing migraines, but bulbs with bad flicker also cause a lot of problems for photographers and videographers. Photos can have heavy banding and video can have these horizontal lines that just slowly travel down. There are some newer cameras that can detect the flicker and sync your shutter to it. And Sony just released a global shutter camera that also fixes this issue. But it would just be a lot easier if they started manufacturing LEDs without flicker in the first place.

In any case, I just thought this was an important subject that doesn't get a lot of attention so I'd post it here as well.

Hello I'm bringing you Monkey Wrench (the cats more specifically) theories

Okayyy so we know that something traumatic has happened in the cats' past that caused Scritch to become mute.

In one of the old merch commercials (link), after Punti talks about death, the camera pans to Scratch, a ringing sound plays and an image on low opacity appears on screen.

This can be interpreted as foreshadowing to something happening to Scratch. But I think it's more likely him experiencing a flashback to something that happened in the past, possibly what caused Scritch to become mute.

Now by looking at the image it's clear that whatever (or whoever, I'm getting to that in a sec ;D ) it is, it has to do with L.A.W ENFORCEMENT.

Most people in the fandom already know this (I think? I actaully haven't seen THAT many ppl talking about it) but I'm gonna make a quick recap anyways.

L.A.W. has three divisions/departments (I don't think we know the official term for them yet) and the L.A.W. logo (pic on the left) is made up of the three individual department logos combined. Each department is also color-coded with one of the primary colors (pic on the right)

From a poster in ep.1 we can assume the red/triangle department is called ENFORCEMENT. Since it's in red and very similar to the official L.A.W. SCIENCE (the yellow/diamond department) logo seen in the beginning of ep.2

We know the red/triangle guys have to do with enforcing the law, with the military and with containing the cataclysm. They sostantially seem to be the "arm" for L.A.W. (It's also implied that Shrike was involved with them in some way before quitting, but it's not super relevant for this theory)

Okay!! Back to the cats.

The thing shown in the merch video might actually be a character we are going to see in the future. At the end of ep.1, two characters part of the blue/circle division of L.A.W. mention a character named Commander Tezzoree, that apparently gave them some orders. Because of the title "commander" I think it's more likely that she is part of L.A.W. ENFORCEMENT rather that the blue division, which seems to have to do with administration and logistic.

And the creator of the show said this in reference to her..

I've watched the commercials a bunch of times (because I'm not normal about this show) and I think that image is the only thing that could be "a glimpse" of her.

Soooo my theory is that L.A.W. ENFORCEMENT traumatised the cats in some way, and commander Tezoree probably has something to do with it.

And this also makes Scratch's least favorite color being red very fitting.

The alternative is that the image in the commercial actually was foreshadowing, and when she appears in ep.5 she fucking obliterates the cat.

Hello!! Just wanted to make an addition.

user @mangocatastrophe made this trace-over of the pic from the merch commercial (link to her original post)

From this traceover you can clearly see it's a character and you can see the triangular motif way better! The wrench+broken glass frame reminds me a lot of the ones in ep.3 (see pics below), which makes me think she's gonna have a similar screen before the ad break in a future episode (maybe in ep.5 when we get introduced to her)

the Sarek family is hilarious to me because you have so much drama in one place. there have got to be at least 3 like, holo-documentaries or whatever about them. how could you not?

  • you have Sarek, the patriarch: one of the UFP's top diplomats, who knocks up a Vulcan princess then goes “hrm I am ambassador to Earth therefore I should marry a human” and he does, upsetting all sorts of the worst kinds of people on his home planet and causing racist hate groups to try to blow him and his family up multiple times, and seems honestly more put out by his son joining Starfleet than his other son becoming Vulcan Moriarty
  • Amanda, the matriarch: an accomplished educator and quite possibly the only well-adjusted member of the family, but when her son Spock shows up on her doorstep after growing a beard, having a mental breakdown and apparently murdering several medical staff she still shrugs and hides him in the family mausoleum
  • Sybok: Amanda's stepson from the aforementioned princess fling, who becomes an antiestablishment criminal mastermind with an edgelord fake name, hooks up with a hot space pirate, finds religion, starts a cult, takes an entire colonial government hostage sparking a diplomatic incident involving three galactic superpowers, and hijacks a Starfleet ship to the galactic core to find the Vulcan Garden of Eden, where he dies fighting god in hand-to-hand combat
  • Michael, a traumatized human girl Sarek brings home from a work trip, who joins Starfleet, becomes their first-ever mutineer, goes to prison, saves the Federation from a war most people think is her fault and gets “killed” in a highly classified, very suspicious incident involving an experimental starship and a series of red lights that appeared across the galaxy like a divine omen (oh, and returns 900 years later to solve the dilithium crisis, kill the head of the Emerald Chain and save two entire star systems including her siblings' homeworld)
  • and last but not least Sarek & Amanda's one-of-a-kind hybrid baby. Spock, who gets accepted into the Vulcan Science Academy, tells them to go fuck themselves when they're racist about it, runs off to Starfleet instead, gets so famous his arranged marriage falls apart resulting in him publicly strangling his own captain to death except not really, steals the Federation flagship twice, invents time travel, saves the entire planet Earth, dies and comes back to life, goes into his dad's line of work and achieves peace with the freaking Klingons as his opening act, then after a long successful career suddenly dips to go do extremely dangerous underground activism on one of the most paranoid authoritarian worlds in the galaxy to unify the Romulans & Vulcans who've hated each other for over a thousand years — and he isn't around to see it but it eventually works. then he fucks off with the VSA's high-speed prototype ship full of the most dangerous substance known to science and gets sucked into a black hole of his own creation, never to be seen again. and this is just the stuff that's public knowledge!

then you dig into the novels where Sarek's ancestor basically makes out with Zefram Cochrane 5 seconds after meeting him and Amanda tells the press her husband has a huge cock

I love them

chatgpt is the coward's way out. if you have a paper due in 40 minutes you should be chugging six energy drinks, blasting frantic circus music so loud you shatter an eardrum, and typing the most dogshit essay mankind has ever seen with your own carpel tunnel laden hands

Most of my job is marking essays and I will tell you this:

1. Most of the time it's painfully obvious when you're using AI because it spits out the most generic takes possible, and it often attributes statements to people who did not make those statements.

2. An AI paper fills me with a vitriolic rage the likes of no other. It makes me viscerally angry that you're wasting my time and yours this way. School is expensive. There are so many people who would love to be here, who would love to actually be learning but they cant afford to. Have some respect and actually use the education you're privileged enough to be able to pay for.

3. An AI paper will get you reported to the academic integrity office, because it's plagiarism. This is not an opinion of mine its a school policy. An academic integrity violation will follow you for the rest of your academic career (if you're even able to get anyone to give you a second chance) and beyond. Its not worth it.

4. A half assed, insane, incoherent paper that I know you wrote the night before? Relatable. Endearing. Ive been there, I can see you trying. You'll get the best mark I can reasonably give you- it might not be a great mark but it won't be as low as a chatgpt mark. You won't get an academic integrity violation on your record and you might actually learn something.

As a TA im always willing to help people if they ask for help. If you're confused or behind in a class I'm paid to help you keep up. Most schools also have writing centers, where you can access free tutors who will help you with outlines and editing your work.

There is no shame using those resources. The students that do use them reliably end up with better grades at the end of term, and they also save time because its a lot harder to spot your own mistakes than it is to have someone else point them out to you.

Ok rant concluded, carry on.

University tutor/TA here and I can second ALL of the above. Red Bull will destroy your evening. AI will destroy your academic career.

Writing a 40-minute paper on energy drink fuel is a time-honored tradition and infinitely more valuable to you as a person. We don’t assign essays for the purpose of gathering essays—we’re trying to teach you how to think critically and argue for your observations. There’s no point in having a degree if you don’t have the skills the degree confirms you were trained in.

i genuinely think ocd is incredibly underdiagnosed bc i will see people posting what are obvious rituals, compulsions, intrusive thoughts, spiralling, hyper morality, etc and its like Have You Considered This Might Be An Issue

it isnt actually good or normal to have moral dilemmas every day about which posts you reblog. it isn't actually good or normal to check and recheck every message you send "just in case" you sent porn instead of a 'hi how are you'. it isn't actually good or normal to believe that your day will only go well if you have a specific keychain or whatever with you. like i'm not going to diagnose you but i do think some of you need to look into obsessive-compulsive disorder beyond "ha ha funny man wash his hands" portrayals.

I like reading Spock analysis because his character is absolutely awesome. Spock is a character that acts like a prim rule follower, but in reality, he has a complex set of internal rules, beliefs, and a strict moral compass. He is not necessarily a good person, depending on the point of view, but he is both empathetic and capable of viewing the bigger picture, and able to act immediately (but never rashly) while following his personal code. He might regret the outcomes, but he will stand by his choices as the best option available at the time. He is so interesting because he is a rebel, if he has to be, or a rule follower, if the rules agree with his code. He is immovable by the moral standards of society. And he doesn't bother making a scene of it, so most people never notice. But Spock only ever does what he believes to be right.
