What are your complaints about Shrek? (Genuine question, I’m not trying to argue.)
It’s not really so much about Shrek itself. The movie is fine on it’s own. It’s just what it inspired.
Shrek is responsible for every mainstream animated movie now being CGI, full of pop culture references, and almost everything being a “deconstruction”.
Animation in the 90′s was getting innovative like never before, and the general public was finally starting to take it seriously as an art form.
Almost all animation now is either CGI, or fake hand drawn (flash, cel shading over CG). There is still hand drawn stuff (like, drawn digitally of course) like I believe Rick and Morty, and shows like Simpsons and American Dad are still done on paper, but almost nobody is willing to pay for hand drawn anymore. Shrek made hand drawn animation “uncool”, and it’s never recovered.
