RATING: RELIABLE

The above is from this article from The Guardian.  The images are from MYA Network. The caption on their website reads:

Source: ‘When a sperm and egg get together, the body creates tissue in order to support the developing pregnancy.  Here are photos of that tissue from 5-9 week pregnancies.  This is called the gestational sac, and it’s like the “house” for the pregnancy. Inside this sac there are cells that have the potential to become a fetus but there is no visible embryo at this stage. We rinsed off the blood and menstrual lining (decidua) for these photographs.’

The published images sparked a lot of debate, leading to the story being picked up by other news outlets. For example:

Source: ‘Last week, the Guardian published images of pregnancy tissue after abortions in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. The small size and appearance of the tissue were shocking to many. We have all absorbed, knowingly and unknowingly, the pervasive anti-abortion narrative that a pregnancy resembles a tiny baby starting in the earliest weeks. Though an early embryo can be seen under the magnification of ultrasound, it can take months for it to be perceptible to the naked eye.’

Source: ‘People have responded in disbelief, citing the (magnified) images they’ve seen on ultrasounds. […] ”Think of the illustrations on pregnancy and medical websites. The Mayo Clinic, one of the preeminent medical organizations in the country, shows week-by-week illustrations of embryonic and fetal development without any context of scale, like the rulers in the MYA photos.’

As stated in the article, whilst people talk about a ‘heartbeat’ at 6 weeks, there is no heart developed at this stage - only a group of cells that will become part of the heart.

Source: ‘But what exactly do we mean when we talk about a “fetal heartbeat” at six weeks of pregnancy? Although some people might picture a heart-shaped organ beating inside a fetus, this is not the case. Rather, at six weeks of pregnancy, an ultrasound can detect “a little flutter in the area that will become the future heart of the baby,” said Dr. Saima Aftab, medical director of the Fetal Care Center at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami. This flutter happens because the group of cells that will become the future “pacemaker” of the heart gain the capacity to fire electrical signals, she said.’

It should also be noted that the images show an embryo, not a fetus, until the 9th week.

Source: ‘In human pregnancies, a baby-to-be isn’t considered a fetus until the 9th week after conception, or week 11 after your last menstrual period (LMP).’

The co-founders of the MYA Network responded in a New York Times article.

Source: ‘Many people, even those who support abortion rights, did not believe the photos were accurate. Some insisted we had deliberately removed the embryos before taking the photos. The images weren’t consistent with those often seen in embryological textbooks, magnified on ultrasounds or used in anti-abortion propaganda; these enlarged images are not what you see with the naked eye after an abortion. A Stanford gynecologic pathologist has validated our photos, but many people could not believe the pictures were presented unaltered.

Look.

I try. I try so, so, so hard to be patient and kind. I try to be accommodating and I try to understand that people have different levels of education and that not everyone knows chemistry and that everyone makes mistakes from time to time.

But the other office admin here just mixed up a nice big basin of bleach and ammonia to clean out our coffee pot. And left it in the office kitchen. And didn’t tell anyone for 20 minutes.

I’m tired.

A lot of you are starting school and are away from home for the first time, so here are some chemicals that don’t play nice with each other - by which I mean they create other, meaner chemicals when they’re mixed:

  • Bleach + Vinegar = Chlorine Gas
  • Baking Soda + Vinegar = Sodium Acetate, which isn’t dangerous actually but this is a middle school volcano, not a cleaning product (and if you mix these two and put them in a sealed bottle they’ll explode)
  • Bleach + Ammonia (most glass cleaners contain Ammonia, Windex is basically ammonia) = Chloramine (a fun gas that can potentially kill you)
  • Hydrogen Peroxide + Vinegar = Peracetic Acid (because you’re mixing peroxide and acetic acid)
  • Bleach + Isopropyl Alcohol = Chloroform
  • Also if you mix two different drain cleaners they might explode.

Long story short DO NOT MIX CLEANING CHEMICALS.

If you’re considering mixing cleaning chemicals PLEASE GOOGLE IT FIRST. You can even search by brand name. Here:

Please do not die trying to clean out your dank shared dorm bathroom. Please do not die trying to get stains off of the counter in your janky off-campus apartment. Please do not die mixing cleaners in your commercial kitchen, please do not die trying to scrape sticky residue off of a photo frame, please do not die mixing chemicals, especially because most of those chemicals come in boxes or bottles that have big warnings on the back telling you not to mix them with shit.

Also here is your periodic reminder that vinegar is acetic acid. Lemon juice is citric acid. These are fairly strong acids that can cause chemical burns, strip the enamel off your teeth, irritate your esophagus, and fuck up your shit. Be fucking careful with them and if you get either on your skin make sure to wash it off well before any exposure to direct sunlight.

The world is full of magic, and by “magic” I mean “dangerous chemicals that we spend a lot of time around but don’t spend much time thinking about so please be careful out there, buddies.”

A reminder that sell-buy dates or best-used-by dates are not the same as expiration dates.

I love that a food bank is providing this info as they are experts in stretching food budgets and knowledgable in shelf-stable food items

I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who has trouble remembering developmental milestones. I put these together, but can’t take credit for any of the photography. Hope someone finds them helpful!

This is very useful to me i have absolutely no gauge for how old children are and what they can typically do at what ages

I’ve been on Tumblr too long I was definitely expecting this to turn into some existentialist meme

Every writer needs to see this because I’m really tired of otherwise competent novels in which a two year old is like “mother dearest I do believe I am quite frightened” or conversely they’re supposed to be five and going “me hungie!!!”

Did I daydream this, or was there a website for writers with like. A ridiculous quantity of descriptive aid. Like I remember clicking on " inside a cinema " or something like that. Then, BAM. Here's a list of smell and sounds. I can't remember it for the life of me, but if someone else can, help a bitch out <3

This is going to save me so much trouble in the future.

The fact that Microsoft Word has to be a subscription is upsetting. I already paid for it why do I have to pay again

Yes please be mad about it, genuinely- You used to be able to purchase a single disk to install it and use it forever after that initial purchase of one key. It sickens me to see all this stuff which used to be a one time purchase be shunted under a subscription now.

"Why is pirating going back up?!"

This. This is why. People don't mind paying a high price for software if it's only the once, or every 4-5 years.

But having to pay a high price regularly? Especially in the cases where you lose access to your own work if you don't?

That's why people are pirating software.

It’s possible to buy a non-subscription version of Word; Microsoft just intentionally makes it very difficult to find (and also expensive).

However, I know a guy who knows a guy website: MS Office Pro for $50. If the link starts going to a Page Not Found, just search the site; they usually have some form of this sale available.

Worth noting: while $50 is still more money than $yo-ho-ho, that money is a great way to make VERY clear to Microsoft that we DO want one-time-purchase products, not subscriptions.

Or just download libre office or one of the MANY open source word clones

OpenOffice is completely free, legal, virtually identical and all of their files are compatible with MS office. You can even save in MS office formats.

mara tip! with just a bottlecap, paint, a safety pin and some hot glue, you TOO can have things to put on your battle jacket

If you have some pliers, you can use a soda pop tab instead of hot glue to hold the safety pin in place! Thats how I've been making mine :3

WAIT that's swag.... I should try that hold on

@pencil-merchant

[Image Described: close up photos of a pockets of a dark denim jacket or vest. In the first photo, the pocket is covered in the following enamel pins: Van Gogh's smoking skeleton, an evil-looking apple, a Five Finger Death Punch pin, a pink and white heart, and the lesbian pride flag in stripes of oranges, white, and pinks. In the second photo, the pocket has the following pins: Something that looks like a bottle of liquor (writing on it is too small to clarify), a no smoking symbol, a pride flag heart, an ERA pin, and a Jack Daniels bottle cap. In the third photo, it shows the back of a bottle cap pin. The back is a metal soda can tab bent at an angle and secured by the back of the cap being hammered flat around it. There is safety pin running through the holes of the tab. End I.D.]

AMAZEBALLS! Thank you so much for this tip, I didn't think hot glue would be secure enough for the pins I want to make and was going to resort to duct tape. It won't help with the batch I just made because I put the images on the inside of the cap, but I will definitely keep this in mind for future ones!

Also, if you are putting images on the inside of the cap, but you can't afford resin or can't handle resin fumes, Mod Podge makes something called Dimensional Magic that works to secure images behind a glossy (or sparkly, if you get that version) resin-like shield. It's much cheaper than resin, no fumes and good for smaller projects like pins.

  DO. NOT. DO. THIS.

Seriously, do not do this. In no manner of speaking should you do this.

That is a photo of a glow stick in a Mountain Dew bottle.

Baking soda and peroxide creates a corrosive, and adding it to a carbonated drink will cause it to explode. It eats through solid concrete.

DO NOT DO THIS.

left out all the annoying happy responses to give you this PSA

I might reblog this everyday for a month if it kills this horrible circulating image.

Top 12 alternatives to Photoshop for digital painters and illustrators

Hello there!

Yes, we haven’t done this in a while… but our inbox and chat are swamped with questions on the subject, so this article was very much needed.

it’s a simple list of art apps, but we know you love those :D

Enough with the intro, here it is, a list of twelve art apps you may want to check out.

ArtRage is an art program for beginners and professionals. With its minimal interface, it’s easy to keep the essential tools at hand without stealing space from the canvas. Panels can be moved around and tools can be customised. We all know how important it is for digital artists to be able to modify brushes!

  • Pros: easy to use; friendly interface; essential tools from professional apps available; available for iOS, Android, Windows and Mac
  • Cons: it may get sluggish with big files and when using big brushes, but performances also depend on the running machine; limited selection of editing tools if compared to Photoshop - ArtRage is more of a painting program rather than an editing one.
  • Paid

ArtRage Lite is a different version at a cheaper price, mostly for beginners, but also for professionals if they need the essential.

Now free, Sketchbook is the famous app created by Autodesk for various platforms.

  • Pros: clean, friendly interface; easy to use; professional features; autosave feature
  • Cons: lack of official tutorials; doesn’t offer as many tools as other apps (it’s down to the essential); paid subscription in Adobe style for Enterprise License
  • Free and paid

Black Ink is a powerful little program few actually know, but there’s a reason: this isn’t your classing drawing app. What’s cool about it is the vast selection of special brushes, completely non-realistic, and definitely able to boost your creativity.

  • Pros: vast selection of customisable brushes; excellent performance
  • Cons: not very easy to use; non-intuitive interface
  • Paid

This is probably the most complete software for painting, drawing and animation. It was originally known as Manga Studio, but with its updates and addition of features, it became Clip Studio Paint.

This doesn’t say much about the quality of the features themselves considering the affordable price (if you haven’t used the app yet, that is), but among graphic apps, this one is the top seller.

  • Pros: professional features for illustrators; layout tools for comic/manga artists; 3D reference models; customisable tools; various sales with special prices
  • Cons: the interface may not appear intuitive at first; the program may lag (again, performance also depends on the running machine)
  • Paid

GIMP is the famous open source image editor originally created for GNU/Linux and available for OS X and Windows.

Best known as Photoshop’s main competition, this is a manipulation program for both beginners and professionals who love design.

It offers many professional features, making the program a powerful tool.

  • Pros: professional editing tools; supports different formats; supported by different platforms; active community
  • Cons: in spite of the simple design, many options are hidden and it takes time to discover all the features; slow startup
  • Free

Krita is an open source painting app created by artists for artists.

  • Pros: easy to use; intuitive interface; great brush workflow; brush stabilizer; customisable brushes; general good performance; very enthusiastic, although small, community
  • Cons: it may be slow or even crash depending on the running computer and the app’s version; very few editing tools compared to Photoshop
  • Free

MediBang Paint is a free and light app for drawing and painting, perfect for manga and comic creation.

  • Pros: vast selection of brushes; cloud sharing; friendly, minimal interface (non-desktop app); also available for iPad, iPhone and Android
  • Cons: requires an account to use all features; non-intuitive interface (desktop version)
  • Free

Mischief is a sketching app with essential tools, useful for brainstorming and ideation.

  • Pros: infinite drawing canvas; friendly interface; easy to use; cheap pro version
  • Cons: few updates; offers only the essential (but that’s the point); no editing/adjustment tools
  • Free and paid

Corel’s jewel, Painter is the most famous software that offers digital tools able to give a traditional feel to brushes and canvas.

  • Pros: different selection of media; many professional features; PS-friendly
  • Cons: certain brushes may work slow; not easy to use at first; the software may crash (this is the most common report); pricey
  • Paid

Paintstorm Studio is a professional software for digital painting. It’s focused on the use of brushes and blending, which makes the software a little gem in the digital painting field.

  • Pros: good brush workflow; brush stabilizer; “close gap” feature; customisable interface and tools; professional features; affordable price
  • Cons: non-intuitive interface (desktop version)
  • Paid

Procreate is the powerful drawing app for iOS.

With the very sensitive Apple Pencil, Procreate is so easy to use that many artists chose the iPad over the most famous graphic tablets.

  • Pros: friendly interface; makes it easy to organise files; excellent brush workflow; customisable brushes; video recording; affordable price
  • Cons: hidden features; only available for iPad
  • Paid

SAI is a simple app for artists who want to focus on painting and drawing.

It’s well known for its good pressure support and its essential tools for manga artists, but SAI can be used by any kind of artist who wants to paint.

  • Pros: easy to use; friendly interface; light software; customisable brushes; tons of (non-official) tutorials
  • Cons: limited selection of tools, even basic ones; limited canvas sizes and uses; it might crash from intensive work, especially with big canvases and brushes; supports only RGB colour mode; lack of support
  • Paid

HONOURABLE MENTION

Many call this app an advanced PaintTool SAI, and for a reason. FireAlpaca offers almost everything PTS has and more.

  • Pros: friendly interface; brush stabilizer; lineart selection; customisable brushes
  • Cons: no colour slider; limited brush control; although more advanced compared to PTS, the features are quite basic.
  • Free

We hope you’ll find this list useful.

If you think there are other apps that should have made this list, don’t hesitate to let us know!

Thank you and peace out,

G&M
