violyn + neurodiversity
ok so this topic has rotted my brain for weeks, it’s about time i make a longass essay about it
i’m not very good at introductions, bla bla bla arcane has shifted the course of my life, i adore it so much, i’ve made so many good friends because of it, watching caitlyn and vi on screen has really given me a mental health boost and characters i can truly relate to, the diversity they provide is great, violyn rewired my brain chemistry, you’ve heard this shit before if you follow me. i’ve made a bunch of analyses on them, some never posted because i just never got around to it or never finished them, but right now i want to talk about arcane’s portrayal of trauma, mental illness, and seemingly incidental autism-coding.
since they’re my two favorite characters, i’m gonna be focusing on solely vi and caitlyn right now. i could put jinx in here as well as she is another clearly neurodivergent character but i don’t think i have the authority of analyzing her and her hallucinations as i have never experienced them, nor have i experienced severe paranoia.
i am however, autistic and have much more similar experiences to caitlyn and vi, making me feel much more comfortable talking about them and how their neurodiversity impacts their dynamic, general interactions, and how well the two get along.
trigger warning for these topics: discussions of trauma/mental illness, violence, police brutality, social isolation, physical abuse, and mentions of self harm.
note: do not use this to self diagnose. although i am talking about traits commonly associated with C-PTSD and autism, every person will have a different presentation of these conditions. autism is a spectrum and trauma responses vary, so if you feel that you may have one of these or both, please do more research or see a good psychiatrist/therapist.
Really good and detailed analysis!
