On OCs and writing

Some background: my wifey and I do a lot of rping. It’s rare a day passes without some kind of writing - if we’re not actively rping we’re talking about our characters, and sometimes they take over the conversation. Which makes me sound nuts and I fully embrace that.

But…does anyone else find that their OCs are people in their own right? They have thoughts and feelings which sometimes run contradictory to my own, they have likes, dislikes and reactions that surprise the hell out of me constantly. Even the characters I know the best confuse me sometimes with their actions. 

I read a quote once that basically boiled down to, ‘I’m not creating the sculpture, I’m simply uncovering it.’ I can’t remember who said it but damn, I get it. I really do. I have no say in who a character is and once they come to life for me, they’re with me forever. Lurking in the corners of my mind and offering commentary and opinions on things they rightly have nothing to do with. 

it’s hard to explain to people who don’t write. Perhaps Varric says it best:
