This Google Drive AI scraping bullshit actually makes me want to cry. My entire life is packed into Google Drive. All of my writing over the years, all of my academic documents, everything.

I’m just so overwhelmed with all the shit I’m going to have to move. I’m lucky to have Scrivener, but online data storage has been super important as I’ve had so many shitty computers, and the only reason I haven’t lost work is because Google Drive has been my backup storage unit.

My partner has recommended gitlab to move my files to - it seems useful, and I can try and explain more about what it is and how it works when I get more familiar with it. I’m unsure if it’s a text editor, or can work that way. He was explaining something about the version history that I don’t quite understand right now but might later. I’m just super overwhelmed and frustrated that this is the dystopia we live in right now.

I’m so sad to see so many panicked posts about google docs when the original inflammatory post has been debunked and retracted.

Google is ONLY talking about publicly available data. Stuff that is in your drive DOES NOT COUNT as publicly available. 

There are SO MANY companies that use drive and docs for proprietary information who would have MANY lawsuits to bring if it was discovered private drives were being scraped.

Now, I’m not saying NOT to swap writing programs because google docs is pretty pants as an actual word processor, and also, never ever have all your stuff only in one place, but I don’t want anyone to freak out that their writing isn’t safe.

Okay, the joke is funny sometimes, but the “Luke is a baby uwu who wouldn’t hurt a fly and Leia is so much like Anakin and would have killed Darth Vader instantly with the sheer force of her awesomeness and rage” fanon take irks me sometimes. Like, did Luke going absolutely lava-rage-monster insane on Vader, beating the living daylights out of him, hacking his arm off, and just barely holding himself back from chopping his head off or slashing his breathing apparatus open or sending him plummeting into the chasm below for even mentioning Leia and just barely holding himself back from giving into that darkness mean nothing to you? We all think of Luke as this sage-like bastion of light, which isn’t necessarily incorrect, but I think we all forget how hard-earned that is. The entire point of Luke’s arc in Episodes 5 through 6 is just how easily he could fall to the dark side. Yes, Luke is kind and sees and brings out the light in others like Padme, but he is so much like his father! That’s the whole point! He grew up wanting to escape a desert planet, he’s a mechanic, he’s an incredible pilot, he connects to the Force so easily it’s like breathing, he’s impatient, he’s reckless, he develops attachments too easily and they run too deep. He runs out on his training in Episode 5, and from that point on, he’s standing at a precipice—he could fall so easily. He could fall like Anakin. He saw his own face in Vader’s mask in the cave even before he knew the man was his father—he knows it. He has all that darkness in him, but the difference is that he conquers it. Luke is supposed to be what Anakin could have been if he had not fallen; he is Anakin’s chance at redemption. But ignoring all of this beautiful parallelism between the two for the sake of a “haha baby Luke girlboss Leia” take is a severe disservice to both Luke and Leia’s characters, as well as the main narrative arc of Star Wars as a whole.

Gig doesn’t like being called Vigilance, because he thinks it sounds like a pansy name, despite it being the name prior to his reincarnation.

Oh my stars gods lords ladies and all of the above do you know how annoying it was to find all those quotes? After not only having played this game for god knows a year or something but having to click and listen to the cutscenes on youtube and look them up. 

I really have no idea why I’m doing so much Soul Nomad related stuff. I’m still working on my Doctor Who series (the one with Donna and the Doctor is giving me terrible trouble so I’ve walked away for a bit just to clear my head and then come back). I don’t know I’m tired but I really love how Gig’s pose turned out even though his back pissed me off before but now it’s not so bad maybe possible? I hope the quotes and sizes and placement of the text and what not doesn’t look badly jumbled up or badly placed which is pretty much the same thing. If you see this on DA feel free to give me your opinion or what you think I could do to fix/make it better, okay? Constructive criticism is always appreciated in good taste.

I'm just gonna slide this on in here for anyone that is interested in preserving old games. They take it very seriously too, they want an archive of every single game. Like, they have lists of every game ever released for a system, and once that system gets old enough, they add it to their archive and start collecting. Their latest addition was the Xbox 360, they opened that vault up in September 2022, and proudly announced they'd finished their collection of games for it back in April.

Also, while their game archives are almost entirely complete, they've got another project of archiving the manuals that came with those games, and that is... considerably less well filled out. Their collection of Xbox 360 manuals is especially rough, they've only gotten manuals for three games. So if you've got some Xbox 360 games kicking around, and the manual's still with them, please consider scanning them and submitting them to the site!

Game preservation is important, but people rarely consider preserving the manuals as well; I really respect Vimm's Lair for being so thorough in their archival work.

No because theres already a case of an actual artist being accused of doing AI art because their art is "familiar to the AI art style."

Theres already people who have gotten the AI to learn correct hand anatomy (albeit a bit wonky, but it's 5 fingers on two hands now.).

Literally what the fuck. This is the scariest shit. People now are teasing it to "hold objects" and "do complicated hand gestures" . My partner you and I both know in months time they will. This fucking sucks. It feels like theres no hope to stop this shit anymore aside from clients and art customers to FUCKING STOP AND LOOK CLOSER AT THE ART.

Like, please if you are commissioning from an artist, ask for like a psd. Or a .clip file. You cant even ask for a "sketch" because theres already programs able to simulate art progress, sketch to render. What the everloving tit shit.

I've said from the start that as this advances this is only going to be increasingly problematic for digital artists.

Yes, these AI can do WIPs.  There is a function called img2img where you can give it a starting image and ask it to create a variation of that starting image - many have been using it to take a real sketch they themselves drew and have the AI do the rest of the work (clean up, line art, flats, shading, etc. up to finished work).  Naturally, you don’t need to have drawn anything in the first place and could have asked another AI to create a sketch for you based on your text description, then run it through the same process to end up with just as polished a finished piece.

Last summer, when the backlash from artists started, I fully expected we’d end up at this point where artists would turn on each other and start accusing real human-made work of being secretly AI generated.  It’s not a knock against the art community, it’s just pretty obviously where it was going to end up as artists became more familiar with the technology and realized that AI-generated images were now a lot of the time just about indistinguishable from human-made images.

I don’t have any good answer for how artists should protect themselves from this.

Thoroughly documenting your process is about the best I can think of.  Keep EVERYTHING, archive all of your project files and anything you used as part of your process.  It’s probably a good idea to video capture your screen, documenting your whole process from start to finish.  Honestly, it’s worth considering setting up a camera and actually video recording yourself sitting at your desk too.

IMO all of this should be a bit easier on traditional or mixed artists, as you’ll have a physical object you can present as your proof.  But purely digital artists are definitely going to have a harder and harder time of things.

This is all VERY horrifying. I’m no artist, but “video record yourself doing the drawing to avoid being accused of using A.I.” is an absolutely chilling phrase to read.

i dunno i just think “you should not defend yourself when strangers on the internet are rude to you lest you look Insecure” is a very strange hill to die on and i think it kind of exemplifies how much damage the “whoever cares the least here wins the argument” mindset did. i don’t know why people on this website seem to think “don’t be rude to strangers on the internet just because you think they’re weird” is an unreasonable thing to ask of others
