every holocaust memorial day, i always ask people to keep romani people in their thoughts, but this year i’d like to clear up some misconceptions that i see every year w/ a psa

  1. romani people are not white. we’re south asian (from northern india), and each subgroup has a unique racial makeup of asian/white/etc, in different amounts. this is also why we vary wildly in physical appearance/skintone
  2. we still face oppression. what we face, especially in europe, can still be constituted as attempted genocide, as we’re forced to live in hazardous conditions or to give away our children, be sterilized, etc just for the crime of being roma
  3. the ‘g slur’ isn’t just an american issue. the reason some european roma prefer the slur is because, in many countries, there is no term for roma that isn’t a slur, and it’s either the g slur or the literal translation of the n word. i’m romanian, and if you used the slur in my hometown, you’d get slapped, since we just use ‘roma’.
  4. we live in every continent across the world. some of the largest romani populations exist in south america, predominantly in brazil. they are no more and no less roma than their european counterparts, and they, like romani in asia, africa, etc all face unique challenges and oppression.

we’re the largest ethnic minority in europe, and yet have almost no political power, no land ownership power (in some places, we’re forbidden from owning land entirely), etc. with very few reputable charities- a lot of us reject charity by principle, as well as there being a general lack of education about us- the best thing you can do to help romani people is to just spread information, and help individuals when you can.

Today, August 2, 2020, is Rroma Holocaust Memorial Day. On this day in 1944, 2,897 Rromani people were killed in the Z*geunerfamilienlager, or G*psy family camp, in the Auschwitz concentration camp complex. We remember them.

okay but this is a power move above any other

It gets even better, because he was doing all of this on a pitch black night. This dude swam towards a lure, slapped at it with his glove, and when it got caught; he let himself float and tugged on the line so the fisherman thought he had hooked a 100+ pound salmon. Once he was finally up to the shore, he turned a flashlight on in the guy’s face and walked out of the water, saying “good morning, gentlemen. State fish and game warden, you’re under arrest.“

At this point, the guy who had reeled him in had literally fallen over in shock, and the other people with him were scared shitless. The warden whipped some citations out of a plastic bag in his wetsuit, made the trespassers sign them, asked if they had any questions, and then gathered all of their fishing gear. And he just. Walked back into the river. And quietly swam away, without another word.

This man is a legend.

Yeah, I know they aren't paying me, but it fucking sucks that dead reckoning is doing badly, at least at the domestic box office.

And I'm sure part of it is paramount's fault (what were they thinking with the release date? Why wasn't there any marketing until basically when it was released?) but also it hurts that people, for all the talk about how authentic filmmaking matters, do not give a fuck.

It got great reviews, it's a movie that for all its deeper side if you dig is easy to watch, it's got the weight of a popular franchise behind it, it comes directly after the extremely successful TGM, and it still wasn't enough.

It restarted movies after covid, doing groundbreaking work on safety protocols. Before that, Tom and McQ lobbied the studio to pay the crew during lockdown. For all the flak that Tom took for shouting at crew members, he was right, it was an existential threat to cinema. It also made the budget balloon to about 300 million dollars, without marketing costs.

On the surface, most of the promo is about the stunts, but if you actually listen to Tom and McQ, what they care about the most, and always have, are the characters. How many franchise can say that?

This movie has got something for everyone. Worried about AI? There. Like women? So many women. All kind of women. Humor? The whole cinema was laughing. Action scenes that make you hold the edge of you seat? Have I mentioned the stunts? Stakes that affect the story and characters, and aren't cheapened by a quick joke. Amazing acting? Well, that's only the entire cast.

I'm sure there will be many thinkpieces about what went wrong, but in the meantime, well, it fucking sucks.

(Also I swear to god, I cannot stand people saying that they refuse to watch Tom's movies because he is "a terrible person and don't want to support a cult". First, that's not how any of it works- do you think Paramount does what, just hands profit to David Miscavige? Do you read Tom's accountant's books? And that's what you chose to focus on, third hand rumors, and not, say, Brad Pitt's ex saying he is a domestic abuser? Second, there's so much bullshit about Tom and Scientology, and most people don't even care, they just hate on Tom for fun. Looking at you, the entire awards circuit of last winter. But the truth is, everyone who's worked with him says he's a wonderful colleague, and just a very nice person to be around, and there has never been any actual proof or credible testimony that he's done anything worse than being a bit weird at time. And you know what would make you weird? Being the victim of a goddamn cult.)

It makes me very sad to see how poorly MIDR is doing for so many reasons. I was raised in the “Tom Cruise is in a cult we can’t support him” club and you know what? I really don’t care anymore. Tom is the last true movie star - very arguably the best actor that’s making films right now - and I regret spending so many years of my life not supporting him. He goes out and risks his life doing stunts that other actors wouldn’t even think about attempting purely to entertain us and make the absolute best film possible. He’s 61 and can still sprint faster than most people in their prime.

Tom Cruise puts his all into his movies and MIDR is no different. There were things I didn’t like about it, yes, but I’m still going to see it again. I’m still going to support it. It’s a phenomenal action movie, delivers on everything it promises, and the best part? It’s not woke. At all. It’s the best kind of film with absolutely no agenda to force down the audience’s throat, just pure unadulterated fun as movies should be (except for the bridge scene, that was not fun). Hollywood needs more films like MIDR, not more Disney train wrecks and superhero CGI monstrosities. I hoped they would take notice of that when MIDR smashed at the box office while everything else this year has been crashing and burning. Unfortunately, I was wrong.

Support good films.

Support good actors.

Support what you want to see more of.

And especially support MIDR because I need them to go all out with part 2 and fix what they messed up with part one.

(I really was not planning on going on a rant but I wrote that all out and I’m going to roll with it. I’m angry.)

isn’t that the neck tattoo guy

This guy needs to slow down 😂😂😂

THAT’S WHERE I RECOGNIZED HIM FROM

But how could you leave out this masterpiece???

I love him

yall r missing the BEST one

I might have just found myself a new idol

Unsure if real or an elaborate character but in any case he’s fighting the good fight so 🤷🏻‍♀️💯

He shouts a lot. What a fun guy.

He has only one brain cell and he uses it to live life

Fucking goals

is it just me or is NASA weirdly aggressive in their article about black holes?

can a black hole destroy the earth?

no, you idiot.

black holes aren’t planet gluttons, you bitch.

and the earth isn’t some weak-ass planet that would just fall in to a black hole like a sucker.

and that dumbass sun that we’ve got isn’t big enough to make a black hole like other stars.

you fool.

This reads like an exhausted doctor explaining that no, you fucking moron, vaccines do not cause autism.

there is a difference between "omg poor tumblr we have to support their floundering sad baby efforts to compete. CRABS!! ( ᵘ ꒳ ᵘ ✼)"

and

"websites do not exist in a vacuum and are subject to the pressures of late-stage capitalism, so if you want this website you've been using for 15 years to continue to exist, consider buying ad-free maybe bc we aren't going to be able to magically crowdfund to turn it into a community owned org"

like genuinely i understand: evil corporation doesn't care about you, don't be taken in by anything cutesy etc., but

they provide a service i rely on. i'd prefer not to lose it entirely, shit as it is. & that's capitalism baybeee 🙃

Me: my god.. i did it.. i killed him..!

Angel on my shoulder: we're extremely fortunate. You shot him in the side of the head and you're wearing gloves. Place the gun in his hand and set the house ablaze. Officer Goger's tragic suicide will be the perfect cover story

Devil on my shoulder: Goger was always eating stuffing and spelt wheat and steel cut oats. Bet he'd taste reeeeal good on a spit with an apple in his mouth. Come on, i've seen the way you've looked at him..

My tulpa, a 6'9" DD smokeshow hottie PS1 graphics anthro leopard girl in a lab coat: you must put a baby in me Your Highness, quickly!

Please take this in the most encouraging and constructive way possible: replace the batteries in the CO2 detectors in your home

I feel the need to correct, because I make the same mistake all the time: CO2 is carbon dioxide, which is very different from CO, carbon monoxide.

CO2: A normal minority component of our atmosphere; currently ~420ppm. Leaving aside the ongoing climate crisis (remember when we were aiming for 350ppm?), the kinds of CO2 concentrations that are likely in a home (even a combustion-heated one) are probably just uncomfortable. There's some evidence of marginal temporary effects on mental function, but almost nobody has CO2 detectors in their homes because CO2 simply isn't a big enough problem. A concentration of ~7% could knock you unconscious eventually, if you didn't respond to the sensation of needing fresh air.

CO: Although it's atomically similar, and comes from some of the same reactions (combustion), CO is actively poisonous. It binds to your hemoglobin the way O2 does, but it doesn't let go again. A concentration of just 2% would kill you faster than you could get up to open a window, and much lower concentrations can be fatal or cause a variety of health effects. CO is generated by combustion of any kind; a clean-burning gas flame generates only tiny amounts, but dirtier fires generate much more. If you have any fires in your home (gas stove, propane heat, oil heat, wood heat, etc) a carbon monoxide detector is necessary.

So, Tumblr is doing another new thing, and you may want to make your Likes private.

On my dash, I've started seeing posts with a header that says "Liked by [username of someone I follow]."

So far via this new feature, I have learned that various people I follow are fans of spicy queer photography, rpf, and some controversial opinions. Which is hardly surprising on tumblr dot com, but I haven't seen some of those people reblog such content in the past, so I didn't know that about them previously. (All these folks have their Likes publicly available, so I could in theory have browsed the posts they liked before. But to me, there's a difference between having Likes visible when people go looking for them vs. having them publicized on followers' dashes.)

If you don't like the idea of your liked posts showing up on followers' dashboards with your name at the top, you can change your settings so your Likes are private.

On mobile, open up your settings and click "Pages:"

Then make sure that sharing is turned off for Likes:

You can also send feedback to Tumblr.

I got a response from Support:

Hello, Thank you for your feedback regarding the "Include posts liked by the blogs you follow" option in the dashboard preferences. We genuinely acknowledge and empathize with your concerns. We regularly collect suggestions and feedback like this one, and pass them along to our development teams. And while we may not implement all suggestions, the discussion around them is what drives us to make great things.

So if you want to give feedback and have it quickly routed to the right people, that is how they refer to the feature.

Well dammit.

On a browser, it's at https://www.tumblr.com/settings/blog/[url]

I can't remember which of the #$*(@!#! sidebar navigation mess it's under.

Turn on custom theme, because that's the only way to get [URL].tumblr.com to work and let your blog be visible to people who aren't logged in.

(Some people have this off for privacy reasons. TERFs generally have it turned off so that you can't publicly link to their posts. ...And then there's the bots, who leave it off by default. This is one more way you can indicate "I am a real person with a blog here.")

Turn OFF "Likes" and "Following" so that (1) your likes and blogs you follow aren't used for trollbait and (2) Tumblr's next wave of data-harvesting-manipulations won't be using them against you and your fellow users.

KOKOBOT - The Airbnb-Owned Tech Startup - Data Mining Tumblr Users' Mental Health Crises for "Content"

I got this message from a bot, and honestly? If I was a bit younger and not such a jaded bitch with a career in tech, I might have given it an honest try. I spent plenty of time in a tough situation without access to any mental health resources as a teen, and would have been sucked right in.

Chatting right from your phone, and being connected with people who can help you? Sounds nice. Especially if you believe the testimonials they spam you with (tw suicide / self harm mention in below images)

But I was getting a weird feeling, so I went to read the legalese.

I couldn't even get through the fine-print it asked me to read and agree to, without it spamming the hell out of me. Almost like they expect people to just hit Yes? But I'm glad I stopped to read, because:

  • What you say on there won't be confidential. (And for context, I tried it out and the things people were looking for help with? I didn't even feel comfortable sharing here as examples, it was all so deeply personal and painful)
  • Also, what you say on there? Is now...
  • Koko's intellectual property - giving them the right to use it in any way they see fit, including
  • Publicly performing or displaying your "content" (also known as your mental health crisis) in any media format and in any media channel without limitation
  • Do this indefinitely after you end your account with them
  • Sell / share this "content" with other businesses
  • Any harm you come to using Koko? That's on you.
  • And Koko won't take responsibility for anything someone says to you on there (which is bleak when people are using it to spread Christianity to people in crisis)

I was curious about their business model. They're a venture-capitol based tech startup, owned by Airbnb, the famous mental health professionals with a focus on ethical business practices./s They're also begging for donations despite having already been given 2.5 million dollars in research funding. (If you want a deep dive on why people throw crazy money at tech startups, see my other post here)

They also use the data they gather from users to conduct research and publish papers. I didn't find them too interesting - other than as a good case study of "People tend to find what they are financially incentivized to find". Predictably, Koko found that Kokobot was beneficial to its users.

So yeah, being a dumbass with too much curiosity, I decided to use the Airbnb-owned Data-Mining Mental Health Chatline anyway. And if you thought it was dangerous sounding from the disclaimers? Somehow it got worse.

(trigger warning / discussions of child abuse / sexual abuse / suicide / violence below the cut - please don't read if you're not in a good place to hear about negligence around pretty horrific topics.)

Kokobot is incredibly predatory and exploitative. I wrote a post about how it exploits minors' empathy and gamifies "giving mental health advice", resulting in an unregulated mess that can only do harm to teens' mental health in the long run.

There are young people on tumblr that actively seek support from KokoBot right now, if you check the tag for recent posts. Those people did not get paid to promote it, so do not harrass them. If you can, direct them towards resources about Kokobot (like this post) that are more transparent about what this company is up to.

This... is DEEPLY DISTURBING.

love the sailing boat discourse and all but i have to say being on a ship for a prolonged time does change a man and i don’t mean in a hardened but wisened sailor kind of way i mean that everytime my brother returns from sea after a few months he has to be reintroduced into society like some sort of feral beast. being on a boat might not give you scurvy but it WILL erode your impulse control and ability to react normally to any situation whatsoever. that’s just what months of hard work and inability to leave while the ground moves does to a mf

[ID: Anonymous asked: can you PLEASE elaborate on how coming back from sea makes you feral //end ID]

i have to stress that my brother is usually a calm and collected individual who makes a joke too loudly drunk sometimes but otherwise is pretty unassuming. however, he did his apprenticeship as a ship mechanic during covid, and was genuinely trapped in a container ship’s engine room for six consecutive months. in the first week of coming back, my brother has:

- taken a beer i calmly handed him, slammed it back in one go, and thrown the bottle as far as he could before i could even react

- in general consumed all food with the ferocity and disregard for social custom of a street dog to the dismay of my mother

- responded to a poor mcdonalds worker in a customer service voice said “sorry, busy day today” with “how is that my problem” (i tipped them very well and apologized profusely)

- overall reacted to people making polite conversation with a challenging and provocative tone misplaced in. a fucking grocery store

- developed a habit of random manic laughter, especially while doing things like driving, going on walks or other main land activities

- climbed a wall, a fence, and a silo on three seperate occassions without any warning or announcement

- RIPPED a fucking street post out of the ground and ran home with it.

again, he mostly returns to normal after you rehabilitate him (mostly by taking him shopping and to bars) but its fucking fascinating to witness someone forget about the social contract. and it has been better since they have been allowed to leave the ships in harbour again. but god damn.
