While I am thinking about the incredible news out of Minnesota today, I want to extend an offer:

If you are a trans American (or the parent, spouse, qpp, partner, or other close loved one of a trans person who would be moving with them) and considering relocating from a state that is becoming unsafe for you to one with better protections, I would be more than happy to answer any questions you have about what it's like here in MN, and particularly in the Twin Cities.

  • Do you want to know more about trans healthcare here in the state, or what state insurance programs exist?
  • The advantages and disadvantages of Minneapolis vs St Paul (vs both their various suburbs) and just how "twinned" the cities are?
  • Have questions about what the safe space legislation happening here actually does and what it's really like being trans here?
  • Do you want to ask about the various universities or some of the major employers here in the state?
  • Wondering what the winters here are really like?
  • Something else entirely?

I can't promise I'll have an answer to your question, and I can only answer more personal ones to a point, just to protect my own safety. But as a transgender person who moved here from out of state myself in the fall of 2018, and who is increasingly involved with and connected to trans activism happening here in Minnesota (and can tell you a lot about local queer organizations), I can talk at length about many of the things I know people want to get information on before making such a big life decision -- and may know someone else who can answer your questions, even if I can't.

My inbox and messages are both open, and this offer stands indefinitely. I am glad we're doing such good things here, but my heart is aching for everyone else living in less-safe places, and I want to do what I can to help.

I think people treat AO3 like it's much more important than it is but I believe in free speech so deeply that I think protecting silly speech is just as important, especially because it's not a zero sum game, we're not grabbing a limited number of websites while fleeing the burning internet. Not compromising protection for silly speech only strengthens protection for serious speech.

Cryptozoology is my favourite kind of fake science stuff. Wish there was also cryptobotany, like mothman but its just a really big fern in the middle of a field with literally nothing else around it , that spawned in the dead of night, might have killed a few people and never shows up in photos, and no one is sure its even real

did you memorize the 5 species of salmon in the pacific-northwest using a mnemonic on your hand? or do i gotta teach you?

ok listen up, i'm only gonna say this once:

  • PINKY is PINK SALMON (self explanatory)
  • RING FINGER is SILVER SALMON (like a silver wedding ring)
  • MIDDLE FINGER is KING SALMON (longest finger is the king)
  • INDEX FINGER is SOCKEYE SALMON (because when you point, you can jab someone in the eye)
  • THUMB is CHUM SALMON (because it rhymes

good, now that we've cleared that up, go forth and conquer.

i have. a lot of big complicated thoughts about how people tend to treat depression as like. as if it’s nothing. like it’s the most basic easiest mental illness ever. why do we do this. depression kills people. constantly. people will throw around “depression and anxiety” and say they’re totally normalized nonstigmatized disorders and then you realize they only think mild versions of these disorders exist. i have a laundry list of mental disorders and the only one that’s ever actually put my life at risk was depression. if you throw around depression as if it’s the mildest least harmful mental illness ever have you considered shutting the fuck up.
